Foils and catamarans are fun to watch for a while but this is REAL sailing.
Both is real sailing.
It’s all sailing, it’s just the foiling takes far more skill
Best Americas cup race ever. Blow my mind.
Great match racing at its best.
This is the best sailing Race i've ever watched hands down!
The americas cup needs to be like this again. The foils are cool but the sailing sucks.
I disagree. The foiling boats is making the sport more spectator friendly and is attracting new fans. But I do think it’s time for the AC to have classes or divisions. A Foiling/technology class and a Classic class. As long as these large mono haul yachts aren’t lost or destroyed, the teams came come back with them. For each AC there will be different classes to win.
I remember watching this and thinking this is the best America’s Cup I have ever seen.
I'm sure I get that feeling EVERY cup though? It's just constantly evolving and changing!
Great to watch the final race in 1983 too. That whole regatta was an amazing story.
It still is the best racing. It doesn't 'seem' exciting but it really is extraordinary.
@@rabidbigdog today's race was pretty extraordinary, too!
Well...that's the best match race I've ever seen
This was yacht racing at its finest.
I remember watching it live on tv......i could not hold my breath.. to be fair up until today every time I watch it back... that was real america's cup.
SUI 100 was the design pinnacle of this class.
It is not possible to have a race like this with the current boats. I love the foiling boats. They are a marvel of engineering and watching them sail is incredible. But you can't match race them. The only thing that matters is staying of the foils. There is no recovery from mistakes and there is no real need for racing tactics outside of the prestart.
Has there been a single close match race with these sorts of tactical lead changes since they started foiling?
Edit: I stand somewhat corrected. There have been some fantastic races in the Challenger series for AC36. Maybe it's the multi hulls that cause poor racing not the foils. Not being able to easily tack means they just sailed boundary to boundary. The AC75s don't lose much in tacks so they can fight a bit more.
yes. - To be honest though most of the 12m racing wasn’t that close either.
What boat did they use in 2007
Missing these races. Glorious sailing.
One of the best races in AC history. I wish they'd go back to these boats.
No. But yes that was a good race
@@georise922 would much rather see these over the AC75
What if when the actual racing starts and the weather's to settled for enough race days, we're as the previous boats could have raced
@@KnowledgePerformance7 definitely no those 12 meter are boring af
@@Alakwe the big problem to me is close usage of the rules is impossible, they use imaginary boxes to determine fouled rules instead of heading another boat up, it's not a match race if you can't control the other boat
I feel there is far more skill and tactics in this racing and yes, I like spinnakers.
There are way more chances for errors that allow a pass
More team work for sure. Less driving, after the start at least. Damn sure better than that A. C. 33 crap.
Yep. First time in 40 years I'm not really even following the ac. No passing, no pre start, no lead changes, no spinikers, sail changes etc I've never been bored watching slow sailing but incredibly the faster it is the less interesting it is.
I played this at 2x speed and it was still to slow
viva monohulls!
Unbelievable race, exciting each time watching. Not one team but yachting is winner!
Wow look at those boats... snail-paced compared to today ^^
The starts in those old races were insanely exciting. Love the new boats but it’s like 20-20 cricket versus test match cricket. Almost different sports.
But this is still sailing and not flying. There are more people involved in the sailing process and it seems that this is more challenging.
I miss these kinds of races. Exciting prestarts, sailchanges, closequarters racing.
@@GypseyGuy I absolutely agree with you, however, compared to todays races they look like classic oldtimers, more like the J Class :-)
@@x40xandus Flying the boats is obviously far more challenging
I knew what how it ends and my heart was still pumping... If only they'd held off the penalty for another 10 meters. But one of the best AC races ever.
Now that is a match race! Bring those back.
bring these beauties back
Une régal , rien a voir avec la Parda cup où franchement il ne se passe rien. Ici se sont de belles manœuvres , de l'esprit d'equipe et de sportivité . Un temps maintenant révolu. Sick !!
That was sailing!
Incredible. Amazing how many crew mistakes lost this series for Team New Zealand. People blame Dean Barker but it really comes back to all those spinnaker issues.
How so, Team NZ was constantly better on downwind anyway.
@@12345fowlerthey had spinnaker issues in four races, all of which they lost.
@@StuMcKinlay I hear you but they consistantly had beaten Alinghi on downwind, so they seemed to have had the main lost upwind not downwind.
This was absolutely fukn heartbreaking
Proper match sailing
Fantastic, a sailing Masterpiece, never seen anything like this
Good times, when sailing was real sailing
Great race with so many emotions...
Yes, I too miss the races between boats . . . sail boats, not foil boats. This is so much more exciting than the current races going on now btwn NZ and Italy.
Nah it’s good to see quicker than walking pace
@@cordlxze9559 I must admit I neeed to take back my comment after the last two races. The A75's are pretty amazing and FAST! I guess I miss sailing without all this technology stuff thrown in. Congrats to Aotaroa!
We want this ships again!
So much better than the new foiling boats. THIS is exciting, not having a race be decided in the first few minutes or leg because someone was going 10 knots when the other is going 40. I want to watch a chess match depending on team coordination and tactics, not two fire crackers, wondering which one will be a dud.
Terry Hutchings & Dean Barker, leading, then losing yacht race ,in 2007
Dean Barker & Terry Hutchings, leading, then disaster,-------------, in 2021
Bring back the monohulls!
they are coming back mate
Unfortunately they're coming back with hydrofoils.
rayguns910 This is boring compared to foiling
@@scotthamilton6062 You will never see matchracing like this on foils. Not even with the moth. Speed might be faster but that's about it. No strategy needed anymore.
@@philrc124 less aggressive moves but sailgp with the 50 foot foiling cats showed some great moves that was very spectacular to watch
It was the last real America's Cup with real sailboats and crews of real sailors performing real manoeuvres...
Today the America's Cup is dead...
A Photo-Finish with this style racing is unheard of
That was a real match racing! Tactics not just speed on foils. AC 75 is like F1 and unfortunately the same level of emotions.
barker stuffed up the penalty at the end, turned too quick and lost too much speed
Brilliant - remembering the 1992 and 1995 cup races in SD - what has AC become with these new boats
I miss these boats.
These boats were true so-called boats, with sails, spinnakers and a crew on board that counted as a small town! Kiwis won the recent Auld Mug so, if they want to come back to the roots of sailing, they just have to ask 🏆
Current AC is an indicator of our times all about entertainment with no substance. It attracts people that know nothing about the art of match racing, killed all sailing schools that started MR programs because of AC75 and moved the purpose trophy from sailing to football.
When sailing is at its best. Bring back the monohulls
The real match race..
The tactics by NZL are maddening
The boats were close in speed, but alinghi seemed to have a slight edge upwind. I think this was to do with the hull shape, particularly Alinghi's fuller forward sections that seemed to stretch out healed waterline length. Love to hear from anyone that knows more about the designs.
ETNZ afterguard blew that race. They won the start, failed to cover, passed Alinghi, failed to cover up the 2nd beat and then stuffed the penalty.
against that NZ were quicker downwind
Valencia was the best AC ever; plenty of teams, competing on more equal terms. Shame we screwed it up.
Wow! What an awesome race!
Molto più avvincenti, fisiche entusiasmanti queste regate, di quelle attuali. Quando la tecnologia supera il limite, è in grado di snaturare anche lo sport più divertente!
Greatest photofinish 🤗😍♥️
Yup, was exciting stuff!
That was an outstanding race.
AC 75 boats amazingly fast, but not a single race has yet matched the compelling drama of these races by the earlier class boats.
I was on the water watching this. We were at the top mark when they dialled down. Alinghi stuffed them on that mark for sure.
Where did the Match Race in modern America's cup end up?
Watched all seven races. Can’t figure out why the NYYC is handing keys to their AC challenge to Deano and Terry Hutch
Here we are again. N. Z. Vs Italy. 1 race away from winning for N. Z. 16 March 2021.
Wow, not for the faint of heart! 😱
I watched this on the 23rd March 2021, without knowing the who actually won it and boy... was my heart pounding !!
So much more interesting than what is happening in AC racing today.
@Rob like the civil war cosplay guys and gals.
Is that Jimmy Spithill commentating?
I think so!
Yea buzzy
The remote control versions race on
Good sailing times
team nz should have done their 360 right next to the line so theres no need for speed.
NZ went through that penalty too early at the end, if they waited a couple of seconds more there would have been a race 8. Still, not as anguish inducing as 2013, but it still was a pretty depressing day
I don't understand this logic. Doing a 270° is going to cost you the same 100 meters from the line or on the line if the wind is the same. Are you arguing the wind was not the same ?
Last race that Barker sailed since then down hill
Cats can not compete, this is AC racing at its best
What a finish !!! 😱😰😅👍
That's proper sailing.
Fantastic suspense.
You get closer than that . 👏
Multihulls, foils and speed killed match racing.
Can you please upload the 33rd edition of the Americas cup
Barker messed up twice top mark should have followed Alingi and in the penalty did not wait fo rthe line
Great racing buts it’s like those Formula 1 drivers running to their cars at the prestart lol
1:45 It seems strange that their sails always seem to be in a close-hauled position, even when they make substantial changes in heading?
Tacking down wind must try that, normally l would soak down directly in my dunger
Relative wind is your answer
I'd rather have these boats than what we saw today with the foil boats, there's no passing on them.
Saw it today though.
Wow. the tacking duels, the grinders, etc. just everything. Today's kevlar contraptions with a crew of 4. Zzzzzz.
Slow motion sailing
Well it's how it has been done since the age of time. Think about how the primitive Indonesians conqueered the Pacific Islands thousend of years ago. Plus your "slow" motion is not really accurate. 5 MPH is fast for snail for instance, if you can see one going that fast I mean.
Damn that was good .
This is soooo much better sport than today's push button barges. *sigh*
That was awesome
Never say die Team NZ
I still feel the pain as a Kiwi. Dean Barker should have been sacked then as skipper. I'm sorry but he just was a chocker in my opinion. I could never do what he can do with a boat but he gets paid to win and for the amount of times he skippered to win ratios. Goodbye Dean
Dai Forza ragazzi💪💪💪💪❤️🌜❤️🌜❤️🌜❤️🌜❤️🌜❤️
I like it
Dean Barker mmmm not taking full advantage at the start, I bit of a common story here
- good job!
barker just makes too many mistakes tactically. you can't afford basic mistakes at this level. not surprised he was dropped by etnz
Can someone explain how this is exciting to watch?
Firstly you have to be a boomer or a purist gatekeeper, then you have to have your rose-tinted glasses on and then try and extrapolate this 1 close race out as if the entire series was this close.
What happened to Switzerland (SUI) ?
Could’ve Alinghi lost this race and still have won the cup? Since the score was 4-2… what would’ve happened if ETNZ won?
It's played as the best of nine races, the first to win five wins the cup...
Hutchinson aboard NZ boat...
These guys announcing are obviously bias towards Team New Z.
Big mistake making the penalty too far from the finish line
Wow
Real ac matchrace
Great to be able to see these races again, but the cuts in the video are a nuisance at best. Please upload these races in full length.
You might not be aware of it, but this is youtube, not TV. I can fast forward myself, if I want to
I bet that last win put more sweat than a final world chest game.
they cut out the ad breaks. this was ch1 NZ
One of few cases In americas cup history that the faster boat didn't win the trophy....
To say Alinghi was way better is bullshit. They were damn lucky.
only highlights
