  • Hateruma Island is the southernmost inhabited island in Japan. There is an island that is more south than this one, but that is a desert island.
Normally, when travellers talk about the southernmost point of Japan, we refer to Hateruma Island.
This time, I went to Japan's southernmost point.
Due to the hotness and my laptop being so slow, I gave up putting voice over so the video is a bit boring but hope you find it interesting.
If you want to know the "most most" south point of Japan, look up Okinotori island. You will be surprised by its location.

Lovely. Spent 10 days on Haterumajima in Jan-Feb 2020, filming a show for NHKWorld. Really enjoyed watching your film. Nice memories. There is, though, a slow ferry which is less bumpy! :-)

What a unique island to explore; So remote and it looks almost untouched by civilization. What a contrast to what you you would find in Europe right? Great video!! 👍👍👍

I would love spend a week on that island. Just doing nothing. I guess you have to speak Japanese to be a solo traveler on that island.

I've picked up kajaking and want to do a bunch of multiday trips. Once I'm confident enough I do want to try doing such trips in a country with less cloudy waters. Seeing how it's 260+ km from Okinawa to Ogami island (the closest I could find). I think I'll, at best, island hop from Miyakojima to, say, Tarama, to Ishigaki, to Kuroshima/Taketomi, to Hateruma. Each hop being 20 to 30 km.

any reason why its almost inhabitable part of Japan ? Is it because of the weather or is it not an agricultural land? can you Taiwan from there ?

Its not inhabitable. Most Okinawans like me will move for example to the mainland like Tokyo, Osaka to work for money and the elderly stay on the island. The island seems nice but it has many problems financially and the Japanese government indeed put us as second class citizens. The military’s base from the USA does make the situation worse with neighboring country like North Korea and China which make many okinawans like me unsafe.
