    Desiderata is a plural noun, with the singular form desideratum, meaning “things wanted or needed.” For many, the word desiderata most often evokes a famous poem by Max Ehrmann, written in 1927 and often referred to simply as Desiderata
    Please enjoy!
    "Desiderata" (Latin: "things desired") is an early 1920s prose poem by the American writer Max Ehrmann.
    Desiderata
    GO PLACIDLY amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
    Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.
    Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
    Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
    Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.
    Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.
    Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
    Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
    Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
    And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

    Desiderata Meaning: 11 Lessons from the Desiderata
    How does this poem make you feel? What lessons can you glean from it? The Desiderata’s meaning in intertwined with the ll lessons that I gleaned from this timeless classic:
    1. Silence can be golden
    2. Learn to get along with others (be likable)
    3. Listen
    4. Enjoy your achievements
    5. Conduct due diligence
    6. Be gentle with yourself
    7. Let go of cynicism
    8. Be fearless
    9. Be at peace
    10. There is beauty everywhere
    11. Strive to be happy
    What is the main idea of desiderata?
    His popular poem Desiderata is a concise but truly inspiring reminder to strive for the high ideals. It reminds us to treat others kindly, to accept who they are and to be gentle with ourselves. Ehrmann also motivates us to have faith in ourselves and to develop trust in the way things unfold.
    How is desiderata a didactic poem?
    A didactic poem is a morally instructional piece of verse. ... Moreover, the lines of the poem start with verbs like 'Go', 'Speak', 'Listen', 'Avoid', 'Enjoy', 'Keep', 'Exercise' and so on, making the poem a set of instructions for a better life. So 'Desiderata' is a didactic poem both in its theme and presentation.
    What is didactic literature?
    Definition of Didacticism. Didacticism describes a type of literature that is written to inform or instruct the reader, especially in moral or political lessons. While they are also meant to entertain the audience, the aesthetics in a didactic work of literature are subordinate to the message it imparts.

    So I got this poem from my doctor. Apparently, there's much controversy surrounding the origins of the poem. It was copyrighted in 1927, but it, (I was told) was actually found at earlier date. He said in the ruins of an ancient temple. Have you heard of this controversy about its history?

    • @jsyblik7578
      @jsyblik7578 Před 4 lety +1

      Checked it out in SNOPES. False claim. It was a misunderstanding due to mimeograph of minister of the poem. Fascinating history behind this poet and poem. Thanks for sharing. It's as precious to me as beauty itself.

      Many years ago I inherited a wallet sized version of this amazing poem from a dear soul who departed prematurely. At the bottom of the back side of the card it reads : "found in old Saint Paul's Church, Baltimore" and, below that "Dated 1693" . This seemed odd as the beautiful language of the poem sounds reasonably modern. If memory serves, online it is explained that the words were likely shared from the pulpit in 1927, before the script was stashed away with other papers . . . and, later, "unearthed" from the church basement, in the 1950s(?), when the "source reference" was added, including the year the church was built (1693) . . . which, still later, got confused as referencing the date of this poem's writing ! B-) I may be wrong, but I think Max Ehrmann wrote this to his daughter and a priest, after hearing it, asked to use it in a sermon (?)

    • @TheBlackDogChronicles
      @TheBlackDogChronicles Před 2 lety +1

      It was written by Max Ehrmann. The claims of it predating him writing it are not verified.

    Its about as inspirational as the worship songs on the average Christian radio station and certainly as Christian as the figure of Christ portrayed in the film Greatest Story by Max von Sydow. It is the source of many religious sounding platitudes like the piece called Footprints. The claim about St Paul's Church does not stand investigation. Incidentally St Francis never prayed anything remotely like Make Me A Channel of Your Peace.

    • @HoyTaraTravel

      Peace Prayer of Saint Francis.
      Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
      where there is hatred, let me sow love;
      where there is injury, pardon;
      where there is doubt, faith;
      where there is despair, hope;
      where there is darkness, light;
      where there is sadness, joy.
      O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
      to be consoled as to console,
      to be understood as to understand,
      to be loved as to love.
      For it is in giving that we receive,
      it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
      and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
      Amen.

      @@HoyTaraTravel I think that you will find with in depth research that St Francis never prayed such words at all .They derive from a prayer said at a conference dedicated to him during the early twentieth century . Similarly Martin Luther never wrote anything remotely like the carol Away In A Manger and it was actually written in America at some kind of festival held in the Reformers name again much later than the sixteenth century There would at least be German words to the hymn if Luther had penned it and there are not and I have never seen the prayer that bears St Francis name in original Italian either. Check and you will find that what I have claimed about Make me a Channel is largely true.
