The Doors Rehearsal House On Venice Beach In 1966

  • Too many "Hard Core" fans have been searching for where The Doors lived and rehearsed their first songs in the summer of 1966. "Here She Be" Folks!!! This was really Ray and Dorothy's beach apartment for which they paid only $200.00!!! The other fellas could crash here when they wanted tho. Anyway, in this apartment, The Doors perfected "Light My Fire" among others of which appear in their first album. Most Blogs say that it was south of Washington. But that would be impossible because from the interior shot looking outside in the photo of The Doors which appears in "Door's Illustrated", the Old Venice Pier is to the left of them; which is to their South. Hence, if the Rehearsal studio were south of Washington then, QUITE OBVIOUSLY, the Venice Pier would be to The Doors right in said photo, or rather North of The Doors. Which is a roundabout way of sayin' that I do believe that I've settled a long standing dispute of where The Doors rehearsal studio was... One more thing, in John Densmore's autobiography, he said that the rehearsal studio was south of Washington. But after 49 years, one does get RUSTY, as it were.

This is what Ray says in his book; "Dorothy and I found the apartment of our dreams... Northstar and Speedway... The front yard was the sand of Venice Beach... We could rehearse on the beach! We could crank all that new Vox equipment and no one would be around to complain... We were five or six blocks north of the Marina Channel and everything was all spread out... It was all wood and glass and warm. What a creative environment."

I don't believe this is the location of Ray and Dorothy's beach house with the stained glass "Mondrian" doorway. In his book, Light My Fire: My Life With The Doors, Ray says the house was on Northstar and Speedway (which is south of the Venice Pier). Of course, the area has changed dramatically in the intervening 54 years. It is much more built up with lots of modern condos. There is a photo of Jim, Ray, Robbie and John walking across the beach, towards the ocean, with the buildings behind them (clearly taken the same day the "stained glass doorway" photos were taken) - www.doorshistory.com/doors1966.html Please note the the photo is reversed! You will notice a pink building, behind them, in the background. That building still exists... have a look on google maps and zoom into to the corner of Northstar and Speedway. Ray also mentions in his book that there was a "praying mantis" oil pump to the south of the house (it can clearly be seen in the photo). Sadly the beach house no longer exists, replaced by one of those dull modern condos!

Something's not adding up. The elongated windows from the famous photo are on the side of the house facing North toward a pier. The elongated windows on the building in this video are directly facing the ocean. Or so it appears. I'm apt to believe Densmore at this point since he was there.

    • @floydpitt7590

I think (as has been stated by others on here) that the confusion arises from a photograph in a Doors book that had been reversed and showed the pier to the south. In actual fact, the pier was NORTH of where the guys were stood on the beach when photographed, which puts the beach house somewhere much further south down towards Speedway and Northstar area. For extra evidence; if you look at the correct photo, ie the one with the pier to the NORTH and zoom in, you can see the buttons on Ray's shirt are correct - ie on the right-hand side (for a man).

Thanks for posting and sharing your love for the Doors - they were truly one of a kind. I also respectfully disagree with your assessment of where they lived. In the photo of their rehearsal you can clearly see that it's South of Venice Pier and you can see P.O.P. pier further to the North, which was on the border of Venice and Santa Monica. The other thing that needs to be pointed out is that Ray's pad was actually in Marina Del Rey, not Venice. I've lived in Venice my whole life and Ray lived in what we call the Alphabet streets which start with Anchorage and progress through the alphabet as you go further south. Many of us used to surf Reef St. on the big winter swells and this is def. the Marina peninsula, not Venice.

He is actually correct. I took pictures in front of the same location. In 2002 while picking up bait at a bait & tackle shop in Lake Isabella, I ran into Ray Manzarek. His parents owned the shop. I talked to him briefly, showed videos of my kids, and told him about the locations I have visited. I told him I was confused on a few, he corrected me on one but said that was indeed their rehearsal home.

The pictures are obviously not reversed as some people say. You can see part of Ray's setup where the second keyboard over the primary keyboard is on the left as thousand of pictures and videos of their performances. There are other pictures of the same setup where the second keyboard is on the left. So, the pier is south of the house. This is what pictures are saying.
Another question is the multicolored doors. It seams to me they are on the right wall and not in the front wall. I looked the pictures again to make sure and my impression is the same than before, they are on the right wall.

I think the general location is correct when comparing to contemporaneous photos of the band on the beach and the fishing pier. However, how can you be sure the home in the vid is the actual structure? If your conclusion is based on the tall doors alone, (versus some other fact(s) that you haven't or aren't able to share due to privacy considerations for the homeowners), then I'm not sure I would agree as your vid shows very little of the home and no shots from the beach itself. You should do another vid showing a panoramic scene of the entire home and neighboring structures farther away on the beach, which then can be compared to the contemporaneous photos of the band from the same panoramic angle.***Lastly, what's interesting is that based on an application of Ray's from October 1966 (see the mild equator website), Ray listed his home address at 4419 Ocean Front, which based on Google maps is quite a ways south of the fishing pier. Perhaps this was a different residence he moved into after that summer in '66.

It's about a quarter to a half mile South of the Venice Peir.

Also, The inside photos of the room do not match this photo, there are big windows beside the glass doors, and one is on the side. You might have been looking at a photo that was reversed making it look like the pier was to the left and south of them, but there are examples where the pier is correctly to the north of where they are standing.

Sorry, but you're wrong here. I can prove it with historical photos. Maybe I'll make a video in response showing you. It was indeed south of Washington. The photo you're referring to has been flipped in a lot of versions, and the proof is on Ray's button-down shirt. The correct orientation of the photo shows the stool inside the beach house, in the foreground, on the left. If the stool is on the right, you're looking at a horizontally flipped photo, for some reason.

Please view the photo at www.flickr.com/photos/justinetruant/5063705462/ However, I can see how one could become confused and think that the structure was NORTH of the pier, which you suggest in your video. See the photo at this link: www.thedoors.com/news/happy-earth-day-doors-7436 which gives the impression that it's south of the beach house but is simply a narrow shot of the band standing on the beach. As indicated in my prior comment, 4419 Ocean Front is SOUTH of the pier, which jibes with the 1st photo identified. Therefore, I would have to respectfully disagree with the conclusion in your video.
