- Sunny Southern California is a hotbed for classic cars, from road-worthy beauties to the forgotten junkers that Barn Find Hunter Tom Cotter wakes up every morning hoping to uncover. But California is tightening state laws concerning the possession of non-functional vehicles, making it tougher for folks to put off projects. In this episode, Tom scours Craigslist to track down Alex, a car guy whose motherlode of Fords and Mercurys has managed to evade the ire of California’s enforcement. Cougars, Fairlanes, Comets, and Torinos-many with 390 engines and/or factory four-speeds-count among the forgotten gems in Alex’s stash.

Anything about Minnesota barn finds at all? I remember on my way down to Rochester I saw 4 (what looked like) late 40s/early 50s cars in an open barn. I don't know who the owner was, I just saw it.
nicest actors
Can't understand the negativity towards a video where the host clearly states the guy is SELLING these classics. Some of you need to try and comprehend dialogue. He found the guy on C-list for crying out loud. Great video!
I bought my Cougar's roof from Alex and he shipped it to New Orleans in 2017. Awesome guy. I visited Cali in hopes of meeting him going through his stash but he was in Georgia on business. Thanks Tom! I got to see his treasure trove after all.
do you have his info? i would love to contact him about some of the stuff hes got
The 428 CJ was significantly underrated. I rebuilt my 68 to spec and it dynoed at 434 hp @ 5400 and 457 ft lb @ 2600 rpm
Gorilla Cookies and it blew up on the dyno
Thank you. The 335hp listed in advertising was underrated for insurance purposes. I always wondered what the true hp was.
My best and fav show on CZcams. Thanks Tom and Hagerty...
ive died n gone to heaven if thats my back yard... Ford product as far as the eye can see.... what an amazing collection of amazing vehicles..
Torinos and syclones are my favorite cars of all time
Please keep this great show running! It's great! Thanks Tom and the crew!
that's where all the Cougars went .
Barn Find Hunter is the highlight of youtube
He would qualify to be on the show Hoarders. What a massive collection of Fords.
At various times I owned four of the cars pictured here. I'd give a left testicle to own them ALL again. At that point in my life I had to sell what I had to buy something else. One other car I owned was a '65 Monterey with a breezeway rear window. 390, but at 4000 pounds not that quick. Hell of a road car, a real tank for weight but sprung soft.
Yeaaa, I can't help but think that when I see a field full of cars. Hopefully they'll survive and make it back to the road someday
all of these guys on this channel could be classified as an hoarder
Fajar Dwi Nugroho or they could just be scrapped instead.
Thank you for this one. My 1st car 69 Cougar GT 390 Auto. Boy,,, do I miss that car!!!
I was there years ago. I was visiting California from the East coast. I bought a some parts for my ‘69 Galaxie and had him ship them home. I enjoyed meeting Alex.
My favorite episode so far, Ford’s & Mercury’s galore! 😍
I'm not a FoMoCo fan, but I'm sure if I had money in my pocket and walked through this guy's stuff I couldn't resist one of these old girls pulling on my heartstrings that I would just have to make mine.
Back in the day when I was a kid 50 years ago I remember looking for old cars in the San Diego area and it was pretty easy. Cars from the thirties & forties were pretty common because they didn't rust like they do in the east. One of the places there were a lot of old cars & trucks back then were the indian reservations, always one or two old cars in the yard most up on blocks.
At VetteKid...I to was a little kid 50 years ago.Born in early 1961...And in 1979 in Downtown Chicago at the JCWhitney parts store for parts to a 1949 Willies jeep truck. On the Ghetto side of town. Burnt cars and on blocks w/o wheels and turned up side down. My one and only time there..10/28/19 9.38 am cst USA TRUMP 2020....
Thank you Tom Cotter for all the great automotive entertainment you bring us. Those Ford cars and those Cougars are really magnificent. I'm définitely a Ford lover. Johnny T Montreal Canada.
So very much potential on his properties. Love, love, love those Mercury's and Fords. A great stash of goodies! Awesome channel; more and longer episodes are a must! Please? Chuck in Kansas
Awesome find. One of my fav channels along with forgotten weapons and project binky. If you read this and have not watched project binky episodes do yourself a favor.
I'm not a car guy but I'm a liking how you network and I get this feeling your helping every person who watches your videos potentially connecting people with people and not people marketed to a huge corporate business , the world needs more of what you are doing ..
MY FAVORITE VIDEO SO FAR!!! I HAD THE 1968 TORINO GT 390 4 SPD. GREEN BLACK STRIPS! BRINGS BACK MEMORIES. MOMORIES OF HOW IGNORANT I WAS TO NOT KEEP THAT CAR IN A BARN!!! SERIOUSLY FAST!
Socal has such a rich car culture.
I love 67 and 68 cougars
Thanks for sharing and regards from Sweden!
Keep on hunting!
You're best video ever !!!!
Great Video.!
Wow... It makes me cry. I have loved the Fairlane fastbacks when they came out.
Love that Ford find! I have a 70 Torino GT convertible,buckets,c4. Love Fords by default...😁 thanks for such a great show.
Tom great job, no question I am a ford guy but this is a great find and very enjoyable for me. I hope each car that can be saved will be found by folks watching the video. Nice job!
Yet another great video. Thanks!
Great video!
For me, you found old Ford/Mercury car heaven!
I love the barn find hunter best show ever!!!
Thanks for posting.
I remember back in my early 20's in the mid 80's having A 69' Mercury Montego convertible w/ a 302. My ex and I loved taking that car out on Sundays.
I remember one day trying to make a K turn with the car and all of a sudden in the middle of the maneuver, the gas peddle sucked itself to the floor and the car just starting doing a burn out right then and there and then a small bang would happen it would stop. Took it to a mechanic, they raised the hood and asked me to brake and gas at the same time. All of a sudden it does it again and when it did the one side of the engine climbed right up out of the engine bay. I mean way up and out. Broken motor mount.
I had that car for a couple years but unfortunately the frame went out from under the car. I could not park the car on uneven ground any more, otherwise the doors would not open and close.
The exterior of the car was red w/ a white top. It looked great from the outside but not on the undercarriage.
Sold it for $500 and they parted the car out. To this day I have never seen another 69' Montego convertible until this episode (that is IF that was a 69' under the tarp..
Nice job Tom. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing this was one of your top videos...
Awesome rides in this show. Thanks from VT.
Totally awesome, my head is spinning. I got to sit down.
what a cool guy, i hope some of his collection sticks around, im itching for one of the marauders at the beginning of the video. ive seen his adds on CL as well, small world. great video as always guys
i just love this series
Absolutely best show on CZcams, Hagerty. One of my favorite episodes on Barn find Hunters behind the Cobra / Ferrari episode. If I ever won the lottery this gentleman would be very rich, cause I would buy everything and restore them all.
Thanks for watching, Scott!
I would just pull me up a lawn chair get some fried chicken and beer, and just hang out in this guy's yard. Love me some ford's.
Great series!
As a Cougar nut, I'm happy to see yet another ep featuring Cougars. As Alex mentioned, early '70 cars had 351 Windsor instead of Clevelands, like the one I briefly owned.
I needed this video today.
The 390 was one of the best V-8's Ford ever made. I have a '65 390 4bbl and it's never been overhauled and still runs great with 93k original miles.
We had a 63 Galaxy followed by a LTD both with 390s. They kicked a lot of GM butt 😂
Great episode!!!
Love how he says he has a couple of S code motors lying around. What a collection !
Good to see you again, when I was a teenager 1977,78 my boss at my fist job had a 67 Mercury Cyclone Convertible, a 390 automatic car, bucket seats but auto on the column, and he liked my 73 Luxury Lemans cause it was loaded w all options and was cold A/C and we would swap cars, let me tell ya, I left some 30 footers outside my high school with that Merc, cop on the beat was on foot, I tortured him, and I didn't bring it to school often, it wasn't mine, by the time he'd get to where I was doing a burnout, I'd leave him in smoke, and disappear
Pontiac GrandPrix73 Ain’t it a trip how back then it was nothing for a teenager’s first car to be a 4 or 5 years old car, a great one. My brother had a 10 year old car back then (a great clean Mustang) and kids laughed at him. That was when a late 60s V6 Mustang wasn’t cool yet. And we didn’t live in some upscale area.
By the time I went to school, in the late 80s, those days were long over. The only cars at my school that were less than 5 years old were stripped down Chevettes, Escorts and banged up Japanese economy cars. Not counting the one or two kids from wealthy families and kids who sold drugs 🤪
Aaaahhh yer makin me tear up Stop Stop Please. This was my world. I’m 63.
Another great video!
great job keep up the great work
Love this show!! Thnks
For a young guy, Alex demonstrated that he had great detailed knowledge on supplied factory engine progression. Knowledge is power in the world of tangibles investing.
Tom, very, very cool thank you.
FoMoCo heaven!
Great video!
Awesome stories
So many awesome cars...just sitting!
My, Cousin lived with my grandmother back in the 70's. He had 70 cougar 351 4, speed and 3.91 gears. It had beautiful girl painted on the hood. A mural, I think it was called. Me and my younger cousin sat in it a lot. Man, that car was cool! It sat there and rusted away from those long cold Indiana winters. Later he owned a 69 396 Chevelle and a 440 GTX Mopar. I still look up to him to this day. Shawn
Why did you wait so many years to find this treasure trove???! I'm a ford lover and in that era I was king of the road. I'm 72, tore up from the floor up and can no longer build cars. Ten years ago, I would of made the trip down there and got a dream car that would of hurt your eyes just looking into the polish cause sundays were wax days and mine looked better than new. EEERRR, I only can dream now but it was nice to see alive these jewels of the day. I has a black on black 428 four speed with posi and a host of crome but now its long gone cause I thought cause they looked so good that they would stay the same... the car was the torino oh by the way and he has them just waiting. These laws in california are getting out of hand... can't change moms flat tire or have the hood open for over two hours or have more than two cars. We have lost our america where we were free
Just brilliant. Love guys like these. Shame they're being forced to clean up their collections.
I need to find this guy I love the cyclones Torino’s and cougars I’ve been looking for a car to build with my son GREAT CHANEL!!!
Awesome thanks
Great episode. I sure am jealous of the lack of rust. I can't handle all of the toploaders. The Finish are gettin it, I ran into a group of them at the Des Moines swap meet, stalking up on hipo parts.
I lived most of my life in SoCal and the good thing about finding old cars stored outdoors was the fact that they did not rust much if at all. The bad thing about So Cal is that you will find a lot of dry rot. Plastics, wood, vinyls, rubber products and other composites will be trash due to the low humidity and heat.
Thanks another good video.
That Fairlane 500 manual 289 was my dream car as a teen my mom had one and she had a 68 Impala SS 😮
Great video congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice collection
I met Alex a few years ago when I flew down to his place to buy a ‘68 cougar (black 4speed shown in garage) that he had advertised on Craigslist. Enjoyed talking cars with him, but was bummed when he backed out of selling the cougar….wasted trip!! I really wanted that car.
Some nice ones there!
Great videos, I look forward to all your videos coming here in Brasil.
I love cars and trucks like you do Tom. Just started watching your findings and is awesome. I own a muffler shop in Hanover Ma. and have been bending pipe for 35+ years on many of the makes and models of cars and trucks you find. Did see that you were near my place at one time and you could of seen more. My neighbor has been building nothing newer than a 63 for longer. Maybe if your back in this area could set you up with another show. Can see my place and surely Ben's place. Could call a car club president to see some of the car's I've had the pleasure of working my magic on. The oldest I worked was a 1916 Rio. 20's and up to 50's are real fun then came big pipe. 65 and up anything BB. Heavy 8' baton to contour better than factory. Have done 3" pipe as well. Sometimes get to work on my own stuff so this is the end of my quest to say your doing a great job. I will view and enjoy. Hope to hear from you if up this way again.
3:47 I thought about something Jay Leno said in one of his videos. He recommends looking for old cars in upscale neighborhoods. If you go elsewhere you see an old car with all these boxes on top of it. I see the boxes.
Now we’re talking old fords 👍
May the car Gods bless this man 🙌🏾
I like when guys hold on to this stuff.
Hagerty, the best channel on CZcams !!
c3dk one of the best american muscle cars ever made(in my opinion)
"Hi, I'm Alex and I'm a Fordaholic."
01FozzyS “Hi Alex.”
My name is also Alex, i am a Fordaholic, i drive a 21 yo shitty ass Fiesta, but i have a lot of hot wheels Fords lol
Yes. I too am a Fordaholic. My name pretty much gives that away.
Love those torinos and mercury cyclones!
in high school I to had a ford falcon 1962 170 6 3 on the tree. 1978-1980. till 1982 then my popp sold for me..10/28/19 9.30 am cst USA TRUMP 2020...
390 4 speed ....damn!!! I'd buy that. :)
Amazing how you find all these cars
You need to grab some of those old cars and restore them that would make an awesome show
Awesome this channel is. Super smashing Great
Like! Thanks for posting!
Like the 63 Comet 4 Speed.......NICE!
Ohhh baby, you'd never find a collection like that in Australia. It's a shame those cars aren't being restored!
i am in a wow state of mind man i cant believe it
I think the Cougar was a very under rated car!
Nice collection. I'm sure like anything...enough money and any one of them can be bought. Ford has always had stylish and muscle car combined together....love them fastbacks .
11:54 The cat on the hood with the tail is highly collectable. After first year of the Cougar, Jaguar sued, made them change the emblem. Most when removed have the tail broken.
What makes it even funnier is Ford ended up buying them
love those 390's
Another awesome video. Nice idea looking up on Craigslist not bad not bad
703 CRUIZ'N m
hes a cool guy, knows his cars and loves it,
6:39 A lot of us are gonna have to plead guilty on that one 🤣
That 1967 cougar 4 speed car would be awesome to own.
I had a '67 Cougar in high school in 1982. I wish I could afford to buy and restore another one ...
I live in Ramona and there are many many lots full of cars visible from the street. Even on my road there is a Continental Mark II parked in a field visible from the road.
Seems like a good guy!
That 63 Mercury is actually an S-33 Meteor. The three chrome stripes on the fender gave it away, so yes it is a rare car, especially with the 4 speed, especially considering that the pillarless hardtop was only available in 1963.
Solid cars- wow. Would never see those cars around W. Pa where I'm at because of the road salt.
The cougar eliminator was the only one i'de consider buying. You have to be really into fords to appreciate this collection.
