I am brand new to Ham and bought this as my first unit. A lot to learn, so will be following you on this YT channel. Very informative.
Welcome to the hobby and to the channel 👍
Great setup walk through! Your series of vid’s on this radio will be super-helpful to me since I still have this radio in the box!
Thanks for creating these vid’s for this radio. I always learn something new when watching someone else set-up a radio.
The Ape does it again, awesome job!
Thanks Ray, we have more coming!
@@TheSmokinApe sweet! That should help limit other viewers from responding to my continued reluctance to read the manual, and mitigate the dreaded RTFM response from viewers. 😁
Nice overview with plenty of specifics; you picked up on this fast!
Thanks for checking it out Bob, this one will go in my Jeep and replace the Yaesu 7900
Always fun, unpacking something, eh? Never mind the box, I got me an FT7, was happy it even had some form of a box...hope you have a lot of fun with it...😊
Thanks Melissa, I’m planning to put it in the Jeep 👍
I am glad that your doing these instructions. The only other person doing this is the ham guy in uk, but he is hard to understand because of his accent.
Thanks Barry, glad you like them 👍
Great video!! Makes me want to ditch my FTM-400 and pick up an FTM-500!
Thanks Craig. I never had the 400…
In case you haven't found this out yet, When you long press your function button and get to the menu, you can then use the sub dial to go through the menu by group. Also the top left button, if you long press it, that will take you to the menu for the fron and rear speakers
Thanks for the info 👍
Looks amazing, my (very) ageing ic208 in car might get retired when this thing is released in Australia, but hey, this is Australia so we wont see this for another 2 years probably LOL, looks like the icom stays in car a bit longer.
It’s pretty sweet, I’m replacing the old Yaesu 7900 that’s in my Jeep 👍
I have a question... Can you set the second VFO to, say the NWS frequency, and listen to their broadcast and still use the main VFO for communication?
Interested to see your install in your Jeep. I’m thinking of doing the same in my Gladiator.
I will cover that 👍
@@TheSmokinApe is there a MARS mod for it yet?
We needed a Hayden video of Ape buying a 500D at Hamvention 😆Wonder why glass fuses and not the automotive type.
LOL right
I have no idea about the fuses, we can ask John 👍
Oddly enough, all of the European radios come with the plug-in type automotive fuses, my FTM-400 had these, maybe it's just what Yaesu America wanted?
When setting your call sign, my wife and I would both be using the radio. Can you easily store both or more call signs and easily switch it depending on whom is operating the radio?
Hey David, I’m not seeing an option for that. If I find it I will post back here.
What if you don't input a callsign at all? Could both of you use the radio like that?
I have the ftm 100 but just ordered the ftm 500 should get it in 2-3 weeks it probably over kill for me but why not. After 5 months how do you like the radio what pros and cons have you come across.
Thanks
I like it, I do wish it had banks.
I just bought an FTM 500 D last week - but it's on backorder. Grrr. So I'm soaking up as much info from the school of CZcams as I can. I've been absent from ham for almost 20 years. I'm an old fart and probably forgot more than I ever knew - 🤣 KD7LWL
Well welcome back! Good luck with the radio👍
Another great video Ape, but for once your not getting me to spend money. I like the 500, but I still really like my 2730A in my truck and I have an old FT-8900R I keep in the shack...lol
Thanks Ken, glad you liked it 👍
Bro! You bought one!
👀
I got your call sign!!!
Where? I missed it
Ohh... November Oscar Charlie Alpha Lima Lima
That’s it!
Anyone have information on using External Speaker jacks A and B (I'm using the Yaesu recommend MLS-100 External speakers, which I've tried 2 different sets, same results)? The FTM-500D manual indicates Main band audio would output on External Speaker A, and Sub band audio would output on External Speaker B. On my radio with the December 2023 Firmware, both my Main audio and Sub audio output on External Speaker B. I only receive beeps from button presses on External Speaker A.
I have no clue as to how to install power poles to this radio. Are they really necessary?
The are not necessary but they are convenient if that is what you use in your shack.
I bought this radio and I have a problem with APRS commentary. At the end it always shows something like this: _4 ? Do you feel this way too? Is this some kind of software error?
Sorry man, I don't APRS
On page 33 of operating manual (the same that came with the radio), on section installing the radio, you can read the following note:
“Do not use the DC power supply cable with the fuse holder cut off.”
In this video, moment 6:25, by cutting the cable like that, you seems to not follow such recommendation.
Can you comment that? Maybe your line already contains some protection…
I connect it to a fused cable...
@@TheSmokinApe 73 from Portugal
And I bought a FTM300D, just before this came out.
That always happens to me as well, the 300 is a pretty sweet radio though...
@@TheSmokinApe I just got an FT5D to go with it, so expect Yaesu to announce a new HT any day now.
Haha
good video, that is the radio I was going to put in the wife's jeep.
Thanks Thump, so far I dig it 👍
Wish it did SSB too!
Me to Steve...
Looks like you got the call sign to enter on the first try... we both know that was some editing though 😅
First take son...
Wow TO you're so witty
Digging the cat video Easter eggs 😁
Lol
700$ for a dual band radio is wild
I paid $650 but you make a fair point.
@@TheSmokinApe I'm curious about the hobby as a whole and it's growth rate with the current market prices for these radios. I understand that quality isn't cheap either, I guess it's just the world we live in. Not your fault, no hate meant towards you sir.
thanks for the follow up Roberto 👍
Screen is too small. APRS is so messed up compared to the ftm400. Yaesu gave us the radio no one was looking for, took away the class leading radio and we’re all out here still looking for the all band all mode QRP radio. Good review Ape.
I haven’t messed with the APRS yet.
