There is ONE material that I've been 3D carving for a while, though I've never seen ANYONE mention it on
CZcams, and that is Plaster of Paris. I got the idea a couple of years ago, and I've worked up a pretty good
process. Carving the plaster blank rather than making a mold and casting the item will give MUCH better fine
details. Plus, it's so fast and easy to carve, it's a TON of fun! :) If you have artistic skills, you can paint or
color the pieces to your liking.
You can get started very simply, just buy a bag of DAP at your local crafts outlet and cast some blanks in
plastic cups or food trays, doesn't get much cheaper than that!
You'll get better results and enjoy the process more with a few upgrades.
Regular plaster does OK, but trust me and splurge for some good quality HydroCal plaster. It will hold
AMAZING detail, offers extra strength and heft, and has a totally non-dusty finished surface. Avoid "Light
Weight" Hydrocal, it's much too soft and flakes a lot.
Also useful are some of those silicone molds used for casting epoxy drink coasters, I have a bunch of 100mm
squares, 100mm rounds, and a few larger ones for bigger pieces. Spritz the molds with some water with a
few drops of dish soap mixed in to make sure the plaster flows into corners.
The next useful tool is a vacuum pump with a 2 gallon pot, for degassing the liquid plaster to make sure no
bubbles are trapped inside the blank. I pull a vacuum, and then bump and swirl the mixing container in the pot
to bring the bubbles to the surface. Let stand for two minutes, release vacuum, and do it once more.
It helps to put the molds onto a flat, movable surface, then level it with shims. Vibrating the molds after pouring
can help a lot too, I press an orbital sander against the bench to do that, but you can just jiggle it by hand.
HydroCal will 3D carve EXCEPTIONALLY well, and since the blanks I make are less than 10mm thick, I
simply run a 3D Finishing pass at upwards of 100 mm/second and a 10% stepover. I let the blanks cure for at
least a week before carving. I'll typically use Tapered Ball-Nose endmills, 1mm diameter tip for most jobs
including the ones shown in the photo, and 0.5mm for super-fine detail.
If you have any questions, I'll be happy to try to help you!

Nice! I haven't even heard of most of these. I'll have to give them a try... I frequently machine aluminum, carbon fiber, and epoxy resin. It carves all 3 really well... With aluminum, you just have to go slow and some sort of spray/lube system helps (I used the air nozzle system that Carbide 3d made a video a few months back, and it works great for spray liquids too). Carbon Fiber is also amazing. I get good, clean, crisp cuts on all. Epoxy Resin (preferably fully cured) is a lot of fun to work with too. I've found, even if it's only partially cured (the consistency like soft rubber), I can still get pretty good results (I'm not patient enough to wait a couple days to wait for it to fully cure before I carve the next shape).

    • @gizmobowen
      @gizmobowen Před rokem +1

I just ran some for the first time and the feeds and speeds on my machine were similar to what I'd use on a hardwood. I thought it was going to be too hard, but the tools went through it easily. It does make a lot of dust, so be sure to use a dust shoe. Quite jealous that you've got a lot of scrap. I've looked up the price recently and it's gotten crazy expensive. You could probably make good money selling the scrap pieces to fellow CNCers. It's a fun material to work with and can be made into pretty parts.
