Hey, ex Beta Archive member here. I can't really bring myself to watch the video in full because it brings up a lot of bad memories, but from watching the part where you go over the demise of the channel, you were pretty spot on. The crunch culture and creator being left unchecked, leading them to get away with everything scot-free are something most people completely skim over.
The crunch we had to endure was rough. It was something I can actually say I was a bit responsible for. Since I was led on to encourage people to work harder on it because we were "making something great". The creator also made things worse, constantly bashing every one of us when assets weren't the most accurate things in the world.
The whole project was a ticking time bomb, because of a situation where the person who stepped up as the lead writer acted unspeakably to me and a few others. We were all in a sort of depression since the middle of October, which led to quite a few of us, myself included, to act very emotionally charged, lacking any real logic or common sense. This led to the negative attributes of the project like the crunch and drama to be exponentially worsened. By December it reached a boiling point, with many leaving. The channel was a bloated corpse by early January, due to the leak causing almost everyone to leave.
In my opinion, the biggest caveat of the project dying the way it did wasn't the lack of a conclusion to the story, but how friendships were destroyed. People who were super close with each other began to straight up despise one another. Some of us still hurt to this day over what happened.
If there's anything to learn from this, it's that you should always look inward and ask yourself if what you're doing is the right thing. And when doing so, try to remove your emotions from the equation. Because most of us thought we were doing the right thing, but ultimately made things worse because our emotions got in the way of our judgement. Obviously, pay attention to what you're feeling, but don't let it take control of you.

Yeah I find when doing group projects it's incredibly difficult to do them with friends because you kind of let it get in the way. Especially if you're a group with some trouble communicating, it can go downhill pretty fast. That's not to say that working with friends is impossible but you really need a good team leader for that and it sounds like you guys had a pretty shitty one. I'm sorry you went through that.

    Hi goose boose!
So I was (going to be) a voice actor for this ARG! They needed someone who sounded young, I was very close with some of the team. I never did any writing or management but I can let you in on some of the lost plot. The lines they had me record were WILD. Basically they were leaning in to the “every copy is personalized. It goes like this:
The character who runs the channel has a nephew who is extremely ill with cancer. They got this nephew to play test this game. The recording is an interview with a Mario game dev (I honestly can’t remember if the game dev was the one who ran the channel or not) and the nephew. He wanted to know what he thought of the game, and how fun was the game ect. The kid keeps bringing up that it was ok, but it was cool how it felt very personalized. By the end of the interview the kid leaves. And the employee straight up says to kill the kid. I believe the line was “we have some plugs to pull.
I know that I have no way of proving this, because the audio was never used. But it was so fun to see this story unfold from the inside. I’m glad you can appreciate the work that so many people put into this project, and it’s a shame it had to end. Thank you! ❀

Thank you for sharing this here! Damn, that truly goes back to the whole "Nintendo hitmen" thing that emerged at the beginning of the Beta/1995/07/29 creepypasta, lmao
I remember one of the main things at the start of the whole beta build thing was that Nintendo would hunt you down if you talked about SM64's Personalization. Hence the slogan "Do not research the 1995/07/29 Build". I wouldn't be surprised how it would not work in the slightest in the context of this ARG though, especially considering the other ideas of the plot that other folks who worked on the project talked about in this comments section. It would become quite the mess. Thanks again for sharing this, it's interesting to hear stuff from people who were involved in the project directly.

Beta Archive was... pretty terrible behind the scenes. I knew several folks that worked on it. Some of them let me know about what was happening in the background and... well, the main story writer was a pretty huge a-hole. Let me get the exact quotes I was given about it:
them (from Discord): "it got cancelled once [name I'm censoring] uploaded the summer 95 build without approving it with LITERALLY ANYONE. they barely showed off the custom level we had spent a fuckton of time on and decided to focus on one that the creator told us to remove."
me: "wanna spoil the rest of what the story was supposed to be for me? Or were you kept in the dark?"
Them: "it was written by the pedo and basically meg and eric were supposed to go on this big road trip and get hunted down by dan, who's basically the bad guy of the story."
me: "Dan's the guy that was a dick for no reason, right? The one that was like 'haha yeah the drowning animation was totally based off of a real person drowning!'"
them: "yes. he was intentionally written that way too. see the pedo and writer intentionally bragged about being able to write like the creator of petscop. if thats any indication of their level of fucking sucking. yes and he also killed a child with cancer in the story."
Soooo, yeah. We weren't missing a whole lot in terms of the story. It was going to be god-awful, and the people in charge of the series were huge assholes. Unfortunate that the real meat of the series, the accurate recreations, were cut off by such terrible people in charge of the whole thing.

Hello! I was a video editor/artist for this channel. (I was responsible for Developer Animation Showcase, visuals of N64 System BIOS, and most of the Cleaning Tape video)
Just to clear things up, we never viewed this as an ARG, since it never had real life elements. It was planned more to be like a webseries, with Petscop as a huge inspiration to the videos.
As for deadlines we had to face, they were horrible. For example, the Employee Tape video was heavily crunched. I was given maybe a day or two to fit the Halloween deadline for that video. Not to mention, The Summer 1995 video was stressing much of the other staff as well (was in developement hell iirc_. The reason as to why MarioNova's footage in Summer 95 was used, it was the choice of the leader. Even the guy who did a VHS conversion for us pointed out Nova's footage, but was told to keep it in by the leader.
As for Alpha Archive, that had nothing to do with the original creator, though some of the original staff was involved though (including me.)
Nobody on the main staff except for the leader and a writer we fired were considered bad, though. Please don't harass them, as they were the ones facing crunch and the awful deadlines.

Working hard at studying for my nursing license has been really stressful, and I find that seeing a hopeful message like that gives me more hope, comfort, and confidence than you can imagine. So thank you!
It's unfortunate when ARGs that are unique and well-made come to an end like this. So much work goes into these, and when an ARG is good, it's usually REALLY good. I really hope that someone picks this project up again, the renders are gorgeous and I can tell a lot of work was put into every detail, even the music is incredibly well done.
It's getting to the point where ARG's are far surpassing scary movies or shows. Things like Local 58, Gemini Home Entertainment, The Monument Mythos, are some of the coolest content I've seen in over a decade, and scarier than any TV show or movie. I absolutely love it, and I don't want Hollywood to find it and ruin it. Local 58 especially, is one of the most impressive art projects I've ever seen. It made me sick to my stomach and scared. It evoked a big response from me. If that were to really play in America, especially during the height of the cold war, the amount of people that would follow the instructions is a horrifying thought. It takes a powerful and creative mind to make things like this, and it's really cool to see the attention to detail some people put into their work, a true labor of love that can be felt and noticed. The feeling ARG's give me is like I'm seeing inside the thoughts, understanding the reasons, the method behind the madness, and choices of a mind you can't help but wonder "How did you think of this?"
    Also Umami's series is amazing.

ARGs are one of those things that needs both careful planning and knowledge of those your working with.
Some ARGs are eventually doomed to fall while others aren't, the way an ARG falls can happen from either a lack of planning, internal scuffles or rushed development. It takes time to make various assets, whether it's making "unseen" renders/"unused" graphics for a game, custom models/sprites for a "unused" character for a game, props and objects for a irl ARG, if something doesn't exist for the ARG and needs to be made then it'll take time for said thing to be made.
The one thing you should never do whilst making something with others is rush it, if it's rushed in any capacity then folks will noticed. Rushing production can and will cause many problems in the near future, if someone wanted to hire extra hands to help out and they heard how much crunching someone had to do to make ends meet then all hell would break loose because of what was heard.
I've never detected my time to any projects that would require lots of dedication and time, I can't really do much without having the sudden urge to do something else. But I can tell when lots of effort gets put into something and it saddens me when I hear it gets canceled do to something stupid happening, whether it's from outside forces or internal struggles. Some ARGs just don't deserve the fate they received, the time, effort and possibly money used to make something just suddenly gets wasted and everything just... crumbles into nothingness.
I never know what to say when it comes to things I have very little knowledge on, all I can do is give the best support possible and hope everyone that were involved in a particular ARG can live peacefully without any scumbags interrupting their personal lives.

typically with early games like between 1995 to 2006 is when game devs used a real life human reference to do animations or textures fore gore or corpses, even injuries.
as an example the burnt corpse from half life 2 that can be seen in the game even to this day was referenced from a guy in a morgue who had his face torched by the cartel or mafia. his face was pictured then put in a book that basically teaches about the human body, the devs of half life took the picture and textured it into the game.

The Mario 64 Beta Archive was at its best when it didn't really try to be creepy and just... was. When the error screens and the like popped up? Totally kicked me out of the immersion. It's like slapping Halloween decorations into a hallway and calling it a haunted house. But whenever they would subtly sneak creepy things into the story, like the water detail or the brainwave syncing stuff, that's where things got really interesting! It capitalized well on the environment it was released in and they really went to great lengths to make the footage and renders believable. I really wish that was the type of content the focused on more. I wanted the story to dig deeper into all the things that went wrong during development, but in the end, it was all just kinda thrown around, I guess with no real direction in mind.
