- Harvest 2017 rolls on...for the most part. Today we had a Major combine break down with our John Deere 9870. We also filled our 2nd grain bag while we dealt with the snow, freezing temps, and mud.

This video is a great testimony to how much respect we all should give the American Farmer.
Don't know how you physically, mentally and emotionally handle all the trials and tribulations. But I thank God that you do.
I could never be a farmer...can't deal with the stress and sleepless nights. My dad was a small time farmer and when his combine broke down it was a major deal, might be a few days before it was fixed, usually because it was worn out outdated equipment. Bad weather, too much or lack of rain, hail, low grain prices, massive debt, cash flow problems, worn out machinery, breakdowns, etc. finally took their toll on him...massive heart attack at 53yrs killed him.

I assure you, this farming outfit doesn't have half the problems of most farming outfits across the country. There was hardly anything in this video equipment wise older than 10 years old. These guys are rich as fuck.

Technology is amazing. Back in the day we didn't have sensor to tell us the axle was broken! 😂
I remember no air conditioning. These guys quit when the A/C doesn’t work..
you did have a sensor. It was your lower back going OUCH when you got kicked hard by the vehicle bottoming out ;)

Thanks this means a lot coming from a sixth generation farmer who's family has been farming since the mid 1860's. Thank for recognize the handwork that the less than 2% of our population put in to feed the world on less acreage every year.

I agree! My knees and back are absolutely shot and I would still like to be a farmer for even just one day before my times comes. I could see myself at peace with the world waking up early in the morning knowing that my hard work and dedication was for the good of the people. A lot of jobs are pointless when compared to farming. Mad respect for all the farmers out there.

Seems like I heard of a MN family farmer won $1,000,000 in the state lottery......When asked by the local TV crew what they were goin' to do with all that money, the farmer replied, "Well, we're goin' to try to stay in business for one more year!"......kudos to the family farm.

If you roll your 2x4s on the end of the bag under instead of over water doesn't sit on the bag and freeze.

I miss farmers. Lot of great memories from childhood and our small family farms in SD and MN. Some of the most wonderful, down to earth people in the world.
Hope you replaced the axle break sensor too. Can't run without that.
Have to take my hat off to guys who can work on a combine in the freezing cold and get it working again. I don't do it anymore but I was always on the corn cart or in the grain store. Loved that life.
Hats off to the Deere guys, getting the combine back on all wheels in the cold, out in the field.... Skills!
My dad has almost 600 acres in Alberta. This show makes me wish i lived out there and learned how to do it. He rents it out to the neighbours.

thats why my kubota/case dealer has 24/7 emergency contact wich he goes day or night,eveing,midnight and the deeres here are no 24/7

Michael Mac Tavish John Deere has a 24 hour thing in Minnesota. They are out right now for me 10:30 at night. They are fixing my unloading auger motor for going in and out. They figure will be another four hours of work.
@The Farming Life steers aren't too bad this year at all, but the heifers are substantially lower for our area, somewhere around $0.25/lb at least.
@Farmer Cole do they charge extra for the 24hr service if after hours?
reminds me of back when we owned a snow cone farm. Talk about a lot of work for very little return. We switched to raising tumbleweeds, and life has gotten so much better.

Outstanding on a couple of fronts: (1) Getting the JD service people there quickly, having the right parts, and getting the machine back in service quickly, (2) Great attitude toward troubles. These troubles are bound in happen in some form, but response to them is what is important - "Just get it fixed so we can get back to work...." Those marching in the streets for 35 hr work weeks, not 40, those marching for !5/hr, etc need to follow the paths of several YT farmers. They could learn much! (3) Good video skills. Enjoy the channel...
400 acres left is only slightly funny because we used to make a great living on 400 acres total. A 4020 John Deere, a D19 Allis Chalmers and all 4 row equipment. But our days were just as long. Good job my friend, Live Strong.
Rawhide Adventures yes it’s to bad there couldn’t be 1200-1600 acre farmers across the country side like it used to be but those days are gone and the mega farmers are taking over
Oh the joys of farming. I farmed with my family for 27 years of my life. Just north of you up here in Manitoba. Back in '97 it was so wet the grain carts couldn't even get in the fields. I drove the combine up on the side of the ditch and was dumping in a truck that was parked on the side of a road. When I backed up I mistakenly backed the rear tire into a culvert and ripped off the entire axle. Same deal. Crippled in a ditch full with 4 ft of water. What I've learned is that if you can survive grain farming you can survive any other occupation with ease.

We are a few miles north on the Canadian side. Able to do 4.1 miles an hour with a 8 row on a 9500. 700 acres in 14 days. Done for the year. Great video

I saw a video on RFD-TV of a huge African grain storage facility. They have 250 acres covered with grain bags. They said like 275,000 tons or 9.9 million bushels of corn! Wowzers! I'm glad you got your combine back up & running "quickly".

Lol that’s all we farm in total. 3 quarters with two 1980’s white combines. Hoping to upgrade this upcoming season.
You guys have a pretty awesome Deere dealer! Amazing that they were able to fix it in the field in so little time.

I hear your pain. We had 40 ac left last night. Broke a slip clutch on the corn head. Back rolling this morning, threw a chopper knife. Back rolling again, broke a fuel line on the combine....no parts available until tomarrow . Needless to say there is still 10 ac of corn left standing......
I'm hoping the axle on our 9770 don't break but we are out of the feild we got 3 inches of rain

To bad about the combine. I cracked up on your $30.00 tie rod. I laughed and thought, yeah right, maybe the tax is 30 dollars. You are a true Farmer, great attitude, when things go to crud, you didn’t lose your cool, just have to get it fixed. Glad it came together as quick as it did.

J Huck im sure the repair bill by JD about made him go bankrupt lol. What's an emergency call cost? $500 to get the truck on site and $150 a man hr per man?

Wow, that was an amazing ride you just took us on. I was sick to my stomach at the sight of the broken combine and excited when it looked like it might get fixed. If I knew the John Deere repairmen were that good in this area, I might have to switch colors. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Hard to believe you’re almost 400,000 two years later
About 3-4 years ago we were cutting corn down here in southeast Arkansas and on the front Axel of our 9760 a bolt backed out and the hole front right tire rolled off and detached the head and broke the side panel up. We ended up getting it fixed in a few days and we still run that same combine today along with a 9770 and a 9660

I wonder when he stopped bagging grain? When I was farming running grain cart I was dumping into bags. Its exactly what Zach said. The bagger unload equipment will work like a charm, IF that bag is perfectly straight, not overfilled or under filled. Basically you had better hope you filled it right on the money. Because its hell if not !

This goes to show you how important good service is. Amazing they got that fixed that fast. I've never used the bags either but our neighbors have been using them for many years for corn & they seem to work out pretty good for them. Good luck on the rest of your corn harvest.

Love what your doing I'm a farmer from up on northern Canada and done the grain bags for years they work awesome we fence them to keep the animals out and one thing to try is when you put the boards on the end of the bag use roll them under it give you a Better seal and less chance of water getting in

Great video. Really enjoyed it. I think o commented on your insta or fb post about the combine. Seen the same thing happen to a case except he was going down the road in road gear we spent a day flagging traffic around him and patching the groves in the ashpalt it made. That guy was lucky he got it stopped right before it would of went over the edge of a steep borrow pit along the highway. People that are now farm folks don't realize when you have the amount of iron running everyday break downs will happen no matter how good your maintence is. Glad you got it fixed and running again

I know you cant windrow corn or beans but here last year lots of people shut it down after the early snow came in oct and started back up in the spring. Suprisingly the quality was really good... but a lot of farmers dont windrow much anymore...the standing crop was flat so they burnt it. The swathed crops were good and the combine was just in front of the air seeder lol

While watching your video it reminded me of a mishap that happened one night...i was visiting one friend who is in soybeans and corn business here in Quebec; he finished harvesting a soybean field and asked me to bring his tractor and grain cart to the next field.While passing on the bridge between the fields i took it too narrow(my bad), the grain cart s left wheel fell in the small creek and the other wheel s hub broke!...oups! What we did is i got back to the farm,brought up the loader tractor to clean the creek,my friend backed up the dumptruck to empty the cart;then we pulled the cart near the street on one wheel;the next morning a guy came and welded the hub in place and they got going again...adventures on the farm!

When I was working my way thru college, we had an old IH 400 we had to put a clutch in. There was also one pissed turkey that thought we shouldn't bein the yard. One of us had to let the turkey chase us while the other replaced the clutch, spilt stands and all. Field service guys have to think outside the box a lot. The farmer called a day later and asked when were we coming to get the tractor? My boss told him it was fixed there. The first thing he said is "how the hell did they do that with the turkey there?" LOL.
Do you lose much grain to rodents in the bags? I remember when they had to put the grain on the ground back in Illinois, and I could not believe how much was lost. Looked like it was pretty sturdy, lots better than we had in the 70's.
Thanks for doing these. I just have 10 acres now in Missouri, but the old family farm was 450. We usually planted corn. Had a one row picker, that you mounted on the IH M, and it didn't shell the corn. We had to run it thru the sheller one cob at a time, hooked to an old JD 1.5hp gas engine.
Watching the pickers now is actually a treat. I miss the farm a lot.

Good idea with the intro. We know what we are in for now! Our corn got knocked down from wind and rain too, some varieties stood better than others tho, luckily most of ours wasn't the one knocked over.
