    The song is about the ebony (black) and ivory (white) keys on a piano, but also deals with integration and racial harmony. The title was inspired by McCartney hearing Spike Milligan say, "Black notes, white notes, and you need to play the two to make harmony, folks!" The figure of speech is much older.

  • @queenrosered
    @queenrosered Před 2 lety +32

    Ebony represents BLACK and IVORY is white. The white keys on a piano are IVORY and the black keys are Ebony. It's about black and white living together in perfect harmony. 😊 Thanks! 👍

    I love the lyrics and the meaning to this song. It is time that every single solitary human being on this planet just stopped caring about skin shades and just started seeing one another as human beings. This whole hate and anger because extensions is enough is enough. We are all human. Peace to the peaceful ✌️

    This is one of my favorite songs, it’s referring to the black and white races coming together using piano keys as a metaphor. I would love to see a reaction for The Band/ The Staples- The Weight ( The Last Waltz) & Albert King/ Stevie Ray Vaughan - Born Under A Bad Sign( In Session).

    Ebony is a very dark wood used to make the black keys, ivory is from elephant tusks, used to cover the white keys. New pianos are made with plastic instead, but the black keys are still the sharp and flat notes that add the harmonics on a piano. Beautiful music would never be, without the whole lot of both keys. Wouldn't this world be so much less interesting, without the "whole" of many people from all over and their differences?

  • @nolansteiner4771
    @nolansteiner4771 Před 2 lety +6

    as others have said, this was about 'black and white' living together (harmony). the piano keys used to be made of ebony (black wood) and ivory (white tusks). hope society can get better at living together.

    Oh my my my! A song flash from my past!
    My brother (rip) used greet us to his own mixed version of this song when my husband (rip) and I would visit. (My brother was a musician) BTW, we were also a ebony and Ivory couple.
    (This song also played to the max back then)
    We'd all get a good laugh. Then my brother being soo protective, would whisper and ask "are we still in harmony"? (Meaning my husband and I.")
    I always answered, "aren't we always!" LOL. Then we'd get our party on! I truly miss those days! And my loved ones that've passed! Thanks for the song and good memories ADogg!

    This was such a beautiful way to speak to racism & unity, by paralleling Stevie's ebony & Paul's ivory, to a piano. I was lucky to grow up listening to these legends.

    Stevie and Paul are two artists who don't need help from anyone to produce entire albums.
    They can compose all the music, write all the lyrics, create arrangements, play a variety of instruments, and do all the lead and harmony and backing vocals.
    But they are also great at collaboration and both have given fantastic songs away to other acts.

    Hey sir. I'm late finding your reaction. Just wanted to mention that when you commended the band, the band is Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. Paul on bass, and electric piano.. Stevie on rlectric piano, synthesizers and drums. Both of them have made complete albums in which they are playing almost all the parts, and very good ones at that. Two geniuses of the highest order. In case you haven't seen it, they did a great rendition at the White House in 2010.
