Supercarrier: crossing the Atlantic ocean on the 🇺🇸 USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78)

- The largest warship in the world, and the US Navy’s newest and most technologically advanced aircraft carrier, crossed the Atlantic for its first operational deployment in 2022. What was it like to sail the high seas on a floating airbase?
The Ford is the largest and most powerful ship in NATO’s maritime arsenal. The first in a new class of super carriers, the Ford uses electromagnetic catapults to launch jets, breaking with the steam-powered system used by carriers for decades. This new system requires fewer sailors to operate, and its power levels can be calibrated for specific aircraft, leading to less wear and tear and lower long-term maintenance costs.
Sailing from Halifax, Canada - its first foreign port of call - the Ford took part in exercise Silent Wolverine, a series of drills off the coast of Portugal involving 11 ships from six NATO Allies. During the exercise, the Ford launched and recovered strike fighters, surveillance aircraft, electronic warfare aircraft and helicopters while coordinating with ships from Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain. Working together in a multinational carrier strike group, the drills gave NATO Allies a chance to see the Ford in action and familiarise themselves with its systems.

A big thanks to our US allies, standing by Europe again and again!
Don't forget Canada. They are our very friendly neighbors to the north.

The Gerald r ford came to oslo and it was the biggest thing in the whole city it was glorious
Did you get to go on board?
I remember my first sight of an aircraft carrier, on Pier 12 in Norfolk. Forrestal on the north side of the pier, Independence on the other side. All I could think was that this was an ugly color for government buildings.
Thousends of ppl went to Malmøya to greet them, and I was one of them. (former norwegian/nato military police)
Arrived in Oslo on the Uss Essex in 1966(?). Like seeing the Rockies touching the ocean!!❤
Proud to be part of the tens of thousands who brought her to life. Never gets old watching them go out in the world and make a name for themselves. Always Good Ships!
Working on the Enterprise now I hope! ♥
JFK is almost done and then it's the Enterprise!
I salute you.. Although I'm not an American I enjoy the security that the alliance with America provides my country. I had an opportunity seeing the USS Ford visiting my country's port and all I can say is "I'm freaking impressed"..
Hopefully you and your buddies will make hundreds more warships which will secure peace throughout the world.. Although with the pace that China is building its Navy and their belligerent stance towards the West, I recon peace won't be long lasting.. All of us will once again have to fight for the freedom as our grandfathers did 80 years ago...
Yep. We subbed to GA to build the EMALS power delivery and control systems. I know there were "issues" for a while, but I also know we did our parts to perfection - a big part of my own job was to make sure of that. It's a fantastic upgrade to the old steam powered cats, and all the finicky valves, pipes, and corrosion that made them such a PITA to deal with. Many people don't fully comprehend the vast effort that goes into producing these incredible machines... it's *at least* tens (maybe even hundreds) of thousands of people, in thousands of different separate companies, all working towards a common goal...
@@Debaucherousgeek The keel was laid for CVN-80 USS Enterprise on August 27, 2022. She's on her way to life.
Supercarriers have always been one of my favorite pieces of naval technology still amaze me to this day.
First boat I worked on as a contractor was the Nimits in Newport News 20 years ago and I'm still in awe of their size
@@seancompton9020 I used to live in 757 20ish years ago and every time a carrier or 4 showed up (some were usually just docked there) we'd lose 5k/people a ship. I could finally take my girlfriend out to clubs again when they left and not get harrassed by drunk e1 seamen. lol. I remember on 9/11 they all scuttled out, entire city drained of people.. 25k or so. I think we had 4 or 5 carriers docked that day.
My gosh. Good thing its on our side. This thing on its own can devastate entire countries' air forces. 🇳🇱❤️💪🇺🇸
It's power is about equal to that of entire small countries
One of those supercarriers equals the firepower of Canada's entire fighter wing. Considering there are 8 to 10 of such supercarrier fleets deployed at any given time... yeah.. glad It's an ally lol.

@@ranishkA123 2x that of the Netherlands. We should take example to the united states and start spending more on defence. Its amazing what we can accomplish considering not only the Dutch, But all of Europe’s economic size. We’d dominate the world stage 2 times over!

One carrier strike group can take on most countries and still win. That's a lot of power.
Me 5 years ago: is NATO really needed? We have peace, and each country can take care of its own security, with regional alliances.
Me now: NATO, live forever! One for all, all for one!
Greetings to the citizens of NATO countries! The best alliance in history, which has already signed up on its cards. Together we are invincible!
And, of course, God Bless America! The foundation and the most important pillar.

It's more honorable to be a protector in a world full of predators, than it is to fit in with them. Thank you for existing!
Ladies and gentlemen, these carriers always remind me of a Imperial Star Destroyer from Star Wars. With her power, dominance and elegancy, ship such as this one is truly iconic piece of technology, specially with a few F-35s on board..
Since her primary role is as a carrier, a better parallel would be the Venator Star Destroyer. Within Star Wars, the ISD is more of a forward base for planetary occupation, plus heavy fleet-on-fleet combat, like a dreadnought. Moreover, the US has plenty more parallels with the Galactic Republic (perhaps worryingly, the late Republic) than the Galactic Empire.
F-35's aren't on the Ford,yet.
.@@connerclark8821 Man, that's some geek talk there.
@@paulbedichek5177 They don't have the same strike capabilities as fa-18s.
Well this carrier alone is much stronger than our country (Philippines) entire air force. That info alone is terrifying. God we're lucky US is a mutual ally 😅
We've got your back, as always. I am a retired U.S. Navy chief petty officer (married for 45 years to my Filipina), and I love the Philippines. My first supervisor in the Navy was a Filipino first class petty officer. He gave me invaluable career guidance -- wonderful guy. Your country deserves a fair shake to build a stronger, healthier, happier -- and safe -- future. Thank you to all Filipinos for your hospitality and friendship. We need you, too!

Yes, the only thing that can defeat NATO is itself i think, ike internal conflict.
Lets hope NATO's diplomatic relations amongst each other is keep being healthy and strong too
Funny, Russia has been pretty successful at doing just that.
Facts. Russia will submit if every nato warship turnt up in the Black Sea followed by an invasion of paratroopers, special forces, and non stop air strikes, would take a day to conquer Russia if we wanted to
@@recgarRussia can't even take on Ukraine 😂😂
Our navy is impressive
So good to see this monster is keeping our oceans safe❤
Massive ship.
More firepower on this monster than most entire have on duty....legendary.
The most important difference between the Gerald Ford and previous carriers is that the Ford generates three times the electricity of a Nimitz class carrier. Everything else - the electromagnetic launch system, the new arresting system, what the CIC can do, the reduced crew requirement - comes from that.
CIC is gonna be built on top of supercomputers in the future I bet.
@@CausticLemons7 Everything is supercomputers in regard to what comes before it. Your phone has more computing power than several Cray supercomupters from the time many of the Nimitz class computers were built. And the 1960s and 1970's era NTDS and Aegis computers were already more than capable of dealing with massive coordination of military attacks.
More important, its the things it doesn't have yet that can use that 3x power generation 😉
@tarkov666 could it be... lasers?
Definitely lasers.
Almost every advance in military technology from here on out is going to have one thing in common: It will require electricity.
I used to work at HII. I was responsible for engineered lifts of the ship sections into the dry dock for assembly. I did all of those sponson base A’s for this boat. That’s some of the work I’m most proud of!!
Incredible experience. Thank you for your service.
I am sure that the effort that has been made by our alliance that will stay united even in the darkest times of the world and at the times of threats towards the alliance that they would be united until the end

Salute to the US Navy.
God bless the USA and all those who serve to keep us safe! 🇺🇸
'Where is the nearest aircraft carrier?' Greatest question to ask in case of a global crisis arises for NATO and the US.
Pretty much a staple of US Naval Strategy since 1942.
This is a Goliath of a ship....
I was on HMS Ark Royal on her last trip, while we were in Puerto Rico we were tied up alongside the USS NIMITZ and she made us look like a " mini me" .....we had 2750 men on board we were told Nimitz had 6000😮 just imagine how big this monster is......
The comments on the carrier's defence is left to her escorts so she can concentrate on delivering the air power is very true. The escort defence was proven to work by HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH battlegroup sailing in the south china sea and three Chinese submarines trying to shadow the battlegroup were located and exposed the lack of experience.......
Chinese are bragging about their naval ship are more the U.S but I doubt that they can't even cross the pacific ocean they ain't battletested proven
Carriers are sooo 20th century 😂
The Ford is bigger but only has a crew of 4,000. That’s how efficient these ships have become. Greetings to our cousins across the pond.
Apparently the USS Ford has a crew of 4500 with the Air Wing embarked. The ships company is around 2600. The Ford was built to operate with a smaller crew. When I was on the USS Forrestal (a conventional carrier) our ships company was about 3200 and we went up to just over 5000 when the Air Wing came on board.
someone saw David? 😂
That Woman who launched the Ship made sure it wasn't going to be a Jinxed Ship ... She really Whacked that bottle
President Ford's Daughter - yep, she nailed it!
Special K was one of my instructors at VT-86. Great pilot and a great dude!
Thank you for your service.
God I love large scale mobile engineering like this. So incredibly cool that we can just build a floating airbase like that, especially with an international coalition of entourage ships in the carrier group.
A testament to the people of the united states who work harder, longer, and smarter to make not just this carrier but 10 more like her. No other nation comes close.....NONE !!!
Greetings from Belgium 🎉
I've crossed the alantic on a carrier. Cva42. You should have seen the sharks following the ship! Waiting for bags of food from galley. All the way across. O ya I lost alot of frisbees.
Sounds like you enjoyed your experiences. Thank you for your service.

This ship has everything but not a small garden. Greenery is necessary for the eyes. Good luck to the mammoth USS Gerald R. Ford. From India 🇮🇳 with love
الله يحفظكم.
4:28 When NATO calls all the sailors on a carrier "less than ordinary". Great editing.
The narrator said that their jobs were “less than ordinary”. That makes sense to me? Their jobs are anything but ordinary.
@@Monarch683less than is a poor choice, means it's not even at the standard of an ordinary job. Should of said more than ordinary.

Nice to see the US Navy contribute so much to NATO security. I've had family proudly serve aboard aircraft carriers for a couple of generations now. NATO & the US, together forever.
God Bless America & NATO countries!
My dad was WW2 22YR Navy vet who served in the South Pacific .All those who serve on these ships are a special kind of young men and women who can be away from friends and family for long periods of time , not for fame or fortune . But a inner pride that is priceless . To simply say thank for your service does not seem enough for these real superhero's . If I was young I know were I would be .

Godspeed USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group
And russia has to buy weapons in north korea 😂 They're pretty jealous probably
Russia always looked upon itself as a top drawer Superpower. But as we've seen in Ukraine, that is far from the case. The US defence budget is ten times that of Russia's. A US supercarrier costs around half Russia's *entire* defence budget. Putin's threats to use nuclear weapons is basically the only card he has left to play. But he also knows if he does play it, then it's his last move. He'd have to decide if being the winner for 15 minutes was enough to satisfy his ego, until the retaliatory strikes arrived via the US Navy's 60+ strong fleet of nuclear powered submarines..... There would basically be a 15 minute "window" to take out the opposition's targeting satellites, after which accurate targeting could no longer be assured......
Funny thing is, if Russia wasn't so hell bent on conquest, they too would have what we have in joint technological progression and economies. They keep turning down the better life for god knows what. The rich could be even richer too if they aligned with the west. True shame for them I guess

The Gerald R Ford is one beautiful carrier
BEAUTIFUL ✊🫵
Beautiful!
Taking nothing away from the Ford, an exquisite example of Naval power projection, don't forget that this country has a long history of 'supercarriers', what we used to call the 'big decks', going back to Forrestal in the late '50s (on which I was honored to serve for two Med cruises in the early '60s). They all did the same job Ford is doing today. Hats off to everyone who sailed them, and to our forebears on the smaller carriers, dating back to WWI's HMS Argus.
Do not mess with the US Navy. I've been there. USS Enterprise.
Totally outstanding!!!!
Way Awesome , Outstanding !! Thank You for Every One's Service and Sacrifice !! Heart felt !! ( from a Vet ) !!
