  • Review of the Logitech MX Keys Mini Keyboard after 6 months of using one with both a Mac and PC. We'll take you through the best features of the keyboard, why you'd choose it over another membrane keyboard like the Apple Magic Keyboard, some downsides we ran into, especially with firmware updates and who we recommend this keyboard for.
    In this review we'll take you through some of the best features about this computer like Easy Switch, which allows you to connect up to 3 different devices via Bluetooth to this keyboard. Plus a look at the backlight, typing experience vs. the MX Keys Mechanical, Logi Options Plus app for Mac & Windows, how to do key remapping, and some issues and bugs we ran into with the software. We'll also discuss why the Logi Bolt receiver is an excellent option for those who have a lot of other Bluetooth devices they use with their computer and we'll walk you through why you'd choose this keyboard over an Apple keyboard and what advantages you still get with the Apple Keyboard.

    For anybody considering getting one of these...I hope you like touch-typing. I've had mine for just over 6 months now, and a bunch of the keys have worn so much that they're illegible and the backlight's shining through. While it's a great keyboard in use, I suspect it's light-use-only. Pretty disappointing for a £100 keyboard.
    UPDATE: Contacted Logitech support to get some replacement keycaps, and they took my address then said they don't supply spares for these keyboards. Then, without any pushing, they just said "Your replacement keyboard is on its way to you. Please dispose of the faulty one responsibly.". Fair play to them!

      Note that they do not carry any replacement parts not even the battery. I know that the full version will not work even with cable after battery have died, it might be the same for the mini. To them, this is a $100 wear and tear product.

    Totally agree re. ergonomics. I can't believe there aren't more compact keyboard options out there, given the fact that MOST people use mice and/or trackpads alongside their keyboards. I was getting so many shoulder issues (granted, it did take me a while to figure out what the issue was). Getting a compact keyboard made a huge difference. I miss my Print Screen, Home and End keys, but alas it's worth it.

    The ergonomics problem of the numeric pad on the right can be solved if you use the mouse on the left. After you get used with it, a whole new world opens. You can immediately type the "enter" key AND keep your left hand on the mouse. Your right wrist will also be spared of complications like carpal tunnel syndrome. I switch hands at least 2 times per year or anytime I feel some discomfort in my wrists.

The only downside I encountered is the volume button sometimes glitches when you're presses it and will go all the way up or down. Other than that, no real issues. I usually only have to charge it once every 2-3 weeks. And I use it for coding, gaming, surfing, etc.

I've grown up typing on laptops so i'm biased to like chiclet keyboards.. and I love that the keys are indented and easy to press compared to laptops that are fully flat. This is the one of the best chiclet boards on the market right now. What I would suggest you do is order it from amazon and use it for 2-3 days (just enough time to get over that learning curve). I charged it once 4 months ago and it has just reached the 50% mark with daily use. Zero problems. Fits in the protective sleeve with my laptop and then into the bag. Again, I was not the only person who hates mechanical keyboards. I just don't understand why so many people say that mechanical keyboards feel better. I prefer Apple keyboard or other high-end laptop chiclet keyboards. They are thin, so no need for cumbersome wrist rests; they are quite; they require less efforts to press. The only problem is that most non-crappy keyboards for desktop PC's are now mechanical. I mean, find a keyboard with 75% layout, backlight, and firmware key customisability that ISN'T mechanical.
    It's like seeing glass body having replaced plastic body in smart phones. Plastics are light, cheap, practical, and allows wireless charging. Hipsters said it feels cheap, so now all smartphone manufacturers use glass body that gets easily shattered and users have to protect it with a plastic case.

    I agree with you on the membrane keyboard - the feel, speed, low key travel make for faster and more comfortable typing - it feels like a high-quality laptop keyboard which we're all slowly realizing is better to type on than these long-travel, noisier mechanical keyboards.

    • @rube9169
      @rube9169 Před rokem

      Membrane vs mechanical is completely up to preference imo, but I think the key is _low-profile_ over standard height keyboards.
      But even that has preference. Too low and the typing (to me anyway) feels too stiff and the feeling of my fingers coming to a hard stop so suddenly gets tiring (talking about the uber cheap and flat keyboards at my school). Too high and typing speed feels restricted. I would like a happy medium between the two, which I _think_ most low-profile switches satisfy.
      Only typed on one with cherry mx clones though so maybe others might disappoint, but pretty sure things like switch travel is standard between types.
      Oh yeah, of course sound is subjective too lol. I like silent keyboards (typed on a friend's and loved it), but another friend's was quiet, but not silent and the sound was amazing.

    I own the Pale-Grey model since it happened to be cheaper than the black model at the time I bought it, White light+White Keycaps makes it pretty hard to read during the day but its still usable, just a small nitpick but all white keyboards+white backlit have this same issue. Not many smaller compact keyboards out there that are back-lit so I went with this MX Keys Mini to repalce my 1st gen Apple Magic Keyboard. I do own a full size wired Mechanical Gaming Keyboard but I prefer to use this MX Keys Mini for general use and for more desk space lol

    I wonder if u used only one keyboard for both the Mac and Windows pc?
    Cause Logitech offers two options for their MxKeys. One MXKeys for Mac and one MXKeys for Windows. This option is available for both the MX keyboard Mini and the MXKeys.
    Maybe that explains the software issues u deal with on your mac pc, by using a MXKeys made for Windows :)
    I own the 'normal' MxKeys for Windows for almost 1,5 year. No issues at all and I personal find the Logitech Mx Keys the best typing/feeling keyboard at the moment. Not to mention the fast bluetooth connection while switching on or pairing with a other device, the solid quality of the material and the many options / personal settings u r able to.
    Theirs only one small thing they could have done better, that is the short amount of time when the keyboard switches off the backlight when u don't type for a couple of secs. It would have been better if users are also be able to adjust the time setting for this:)
    But yet I am still happy I bought this, even it may look too expensive. It is rly worth the price and I recommend this keyboard for everyone who have trouble choosing a new keyboard at this moment. Not recommend it for gamers:)

    Strongly disagree about the superior (supposedly) typing experience of the Apple keyboards. MX Keys feels and sounds exactly the same as an 1,8mm Thinkpad keyboard from 2-3 years ago, which are the best in the laptop business. For me MX + Mac is the ultimate combination.

      @BookClubDisaster Před 8 měsíci

      If you're a fast touch typer, Magic keyboards feels like typing on nails after awhile. The keys are a bit lighter and faster than the MX Keys but at too high of a cost.

    And the point you talk at about 10:00, that is what I have been thinking. The current "full size" keyboard layout is outdated and need to abandoned. It probably was designed when people were not using mouse! With a mouse, the existence of the arrow key column and the numberpad column makes it difficult to use mouse, for right-handed people. I think the arrow key/numpberbad columns should be on the LEFT side of the letter key column, not on the right (letter/arrow/num --> num/arrow/letter). That way, mouse could be placed right next to the enter key.

    I very much prefer membrane switches, as it allows for flatter keyboards with less key travel. Less key travel means faster typing, at least for me.

    Can’t remap and use any functions on iPad, I can remap buttons on Mac but those remapped functions work only on Mac and doesn’t transfer remapped functions to iPad, and I can’t remap button functions on iPad, so very limited keyboard, on iPads and tablets can be used only with default buttons functions which is very sad.

    anyone here encountered auto-sleep issue? I mean, this is a good feature to keep the battery life longer.. however, just resting less than a minute, and the KB sleeps.. It gives me a hiccup around a second or two which is quite inconvenient for me.. there's no setting to disable or to set the sleep time longer for now.. for me, this is the biggest downside of this KB..

    I do not like mechanical keyboards. Personally not my thing. However, I think there are more bad membrane keyboards than bad mechanical keyboards. A bad mechanical keyboard is annoying. A bad membrane keyboard is unusable. I love the MX Masterkeys and like the Magic Keyboard and Surface keyboard.

    I only buy keyboards that can play nice with Linux. I don't need to configure much, just need a solid typing experience with no hassles. It looks like this keyboard may rely a little too heavily on its OEM software for Windows and Mac. I will probably look elsewhere.

    • @MrMrpeters74

      I used the full version while I was running Linux and it worked fine. There was a program in the software repo that showed battery levels. I don't really dig into the software options on my keyboard though.
      I just love this keyboard though. Had a mechanical prior and although I liked the feel and the click of it, everytime I'd fart or something I would get a bunch of accidental key presses. After a couple years I never got the light touch I needed, so guess they aren't for me.
