    6:58 The Example
    7:26 The Djend
    THE HACK
First, to clarify. A fault is not a mistake. A fault is a weakness. In other words, an area for improvement. So, how do you know if your melody has faults?
Easy, you use our Melody Test, which is simply to play your melody on the piano. Yes, it really is that simple. Because, by stripping away all the fancy sound design, you’re left with just the bare notes. This exposes any and all faults in your melody. Then after fixing them, you change the instrument back to your fancy sound, and now you have a melody that doesn’t just sound good, it actually is good!
Alright, so let’s run our example through the Melody Test and see what faults are exposed. And please note, it’s absolutely essential that you hear the melody in its harmonic context, so always play the root note of each chord in your progression below your melody. Our example is in the key of A minor, which is all the white notes from A to A, and the chords in our progression are: Am, Cmaj, Gmaj, Fmaj.
As you can tell, stripping away the fancy sound design removes all distractions and forces our ears to focus exclusively on the notes. We can now hear that our melody has a lot of good qualities already, like its contour, motifs, and rhythm. And by the way, rhythm is usually the most overlooked element of a melody, so be sure to pay extra attention to that. And if you need help, just use our Melody Rhythm Rule.
    THE FAULT
Okay that’s enough about the good qualities of our melody, let’s get to the fault. By using the Melody Test, we can now clearly hear (and feel) our melody’s fault. What is it? Our melody is lacking emotion! So, how do you add emotion to a melody? Easy, you use the 3rd note of each chord. You see, the 3rd note is the magic note that actually creates the happy sound in a major chord and the sad sound in a minor chord, so by playing 3rds in your melody, you strengthen it by emphasizing that emotional power!
For example, in our first chord, Am, the 3rd note is C, which we’re not playing. So, by simply moving the D (4) down to C (♭3), we emphasize the sadness of that underlying minor chord. Next, we added 3rds into our melody over the Cmaj and Gmaj chords as well, which emphasizes the uplifting nature of those major chords. In this melody, we felt that it would be “too much of a good thing” to emphasize the happiness of three major chords in a row, so we didn’t use the 3rd (A) in our melody over Fmaj. This neutral approach of not using the 3rd in our melody slightly dilutes the uplifting nature of that underlying major chord.
    THE RULE
And that is a really important lesson. So important, in fact, that it’s part of our crucial 3rds Melody Rule, which is: In your melodies, use a 3rd to emphasize a major chord’s happiness or a minor chord’s sadness, and avoid using a 3rd when you want to dilute the underlying chord’s emotion.
It goes without saying that every note has an emotion, not just the 3rd. But, not all notes have the same level of emotional power, and the note that pulls at our heartstrings the most, is the 3rd. Remember though, a good melody must have a wide variety of notes, because a melody consisting of only 3rds may be strong in terms of its emotional power, but it will be utterly mind-numbingly boring!
Lastly, this test is super useful for all the other layers of your music too, which is why we also refer to it as the Piano Test. For example, if you want to know if your bass line has any faults, simply change the sound on your bass track to a piano, then solo it up and hit play. Once again, by stripping away the fancy sound design, you’re left with only the bare notes, which exposes any and all faults in your bass line. Then after you’ve fixed those faults, just change the sound back, and now you have a bass line that doesn’t just sound good, it actually is good!

I simply use this formula for making my melodies fancier : I play 2nd and 3rd back to back. Sometimes, it carries a "melodic minor" feeling, and it sounds amazing for emotional music. Sometimes, I use 3rd and 4th for the same result.

I reccomend trying to use a desktop for making music though, bandlab's pretty good on desktop, perfect for begginer music artists. If you want a more complex free DAW (digital audio workstation I think it meant? It's just any music making program) I know LMMS is pretty good and Cakewalk which is in a way more advanced version of Bandlab (made by the same people, initially a DAW that never got on the market and was instead put on the internet as a free program)

dont different cultures have different views on emotionality on different types of chords? i.e major n minor being 'happy' or 'sad' is a western thing and not necessarily seen in different parts of the world. appreciate you guys replying to a lot of viewers, don't see that a lot nowadays

Hey atelier, thanks for connecting, and welcome to the Hack Music Theory community! That's a GREAT question, and here's the answer. In 2009 the isolated Mafa tribe of Cameroon and Nigeria, who’d never been exposed to any music outside of their rural community, were involved in a historic study to find out if they also felt major as happy and minor as sad. They did! So, the Mafa people finally ended this ongoing debate by evidencing a non-cultural human response to music. This is due to the sound waves vibrating more harmoniously in majors than in minors, proving that we truly are all hardwired to feel music as a universal language - genres are merely dialects :)

@@HackMusicTheory I have been thinking about trying to make music but I am still very new to most things. I would love to make alternative music but I am interested in many different genres. I stumbled onto your videos and just by watching a few I felt that I learned more about music making than I had since quarantine started. If you have any advice as to where someone new with little to no music experience would start to trying to make music, it would be very appreciated.

    • @HackMusicTheory
      @HackMusicTheory  Před 3 lety +1

Awesome Donovan, we're thrilled to be a part of your music making journey! We love hearing that you're open to many genres and we absolutely encourage music makers to explore different genres as it helps with inspiration and creativity! We did a video that might spark some thoughts, called "The Truth About Genres": czcams.com/video/Mr5iWrVIX0c/video.html.
To begin with, we'd suggest, if you haven't already, downloading our free music theory book, '12 Music Theory Hacks to Learn Scales and Chords'? It'll give you a solid music theory foundation to work from, and it's a super fast and fun read! You'll find it here: HackMusicTheory.com/Books.
From there, in order to get a feel for writing a section of music, we'd suggest you watch these 3 playlists, which are all series:
      1. How to Write a Song: czcams.com/play/PLgYcaQlDpHN63jnHQaWD6M3-zuhtMjyMm.html
      2. How to Write a Christmas Song (this is relevant even if you're not writing a Christmas song): czcams.com/play/PLgYcaQlDpHN7u7BQRj6zD9FvCxTGbrnYw.html
      3. Masterclass: czcams.com/play/PLgYcaQlDpHN5Poc5pUuvFlb7dqaJ37AFw.html
While watching those playlists you may want to start making your own chord progressions and melodies.
If you don't already have a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), here's a video of the top DAWs of 2021 to get you started: czcams.com/video/8aRx4HMLY5Q/video.html You'll also need Virtual Instruments (VSTs). If you're looking for some free VSTs here's a video with some options: czcams.com/video/EMNv1KTTk7E/video.html. If you have a budget, we recommend Native Instruments as being the best value for money. Their Komplete Essentials is a great starting point, and only a small financial commitment: www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/bundles/komplete-11-select
Then you might consider our Songwriting & Producing course, where you'll learn step-by-step how to make music with all the layers working together (you'll find it here: hackmusictheory.com/books).
Then after some practice, when you're ready to make full songs, we'd suggest taking a look at our online apprenticeship. It consists of 17 hours of unedited video which captures every second of the songwriting process, from blank screen to finished song, while also teaching every single step and theory hack along the way. You'll learn how to start songs, make new sections for existing sections, transition between sections & finish your songs! You can find out more here: HackMusicTheory.com/Courses.
And there you go, that would be our advice on how to get started making music!! Hope that helps, Donovan, we wish you all the best, and please do let us know how you get along with your music making! Take care and talk soon :)
