Can we walk OVER 50km in ONE DAY with no training?

- In today's video:
I set out with my brother to see whether we can walk the entire Chesterfield Round Walk route (around 53km) in a single day. We do not walk long distances usually so this is going to be way beyond anything we've done before, with my longest ever walk being 13.5km up to now.
All of this happens just over a week before I am due to begin training for my first ever ultra marathon, the Spire Ultra (50k), which has a cut off time of 9 hours.

this video brougt back memories from your previous videos but all at once. i hope you and your brother had a wonderful day out and didn't want to beat each other up like brothers do :)
Thanks mate. I can hardly believe I've seen all those places in one go. The almost recovered now lol. I think me and my brother were too tired to fight after that 😂👍🏻
@@markg99 I am sure if i went with my sister one of us wouldn't have made it back live so Kudos to you
Very impressive Mark , wow! You. must be anxious to get the training started!
Thanks, Gill 🙂 Yes I'm eager to get stuck in. Only 2 daya to go 👍🏻🏃♂️
well done. It's always great to see you out and about. I loved my first 50k so can't wait to see your one. Hope the training goes well!
Thanks! It felt really good to find out that I could at least walk the distance. I'm at the end of my first week of training now and it's going well so far 🙂👍🏻🏃♂️
Hi Mark, so nice to see your video again. It's great that your brother supported you on your journey. I hope your training for the ultra is going well. All the best with it. I think sometimes it's harder to walk it all than to run/walk because you stay longer on your feet.
Hi Olga. I just started my ultra training today. So far so good. 1 run and 1 gym session in the books 🙂 I agree that the idea of less time on feet sounds very appealing after taking almost 12 hours for that big walk. Thanks for the support 👍🏻🏃♂️
Enjoyed that.
All the best with the ultra training 👍
Cheers mate. Can't wait to get started 👍🏻🏃♂️
Yes Mark! Smashed it mate! That's a great confidence boost to kick off the training block! You now know you can do the distance mate you now just need to focus on getting round a bit quicker. 😊👍 Looked a tad muddy out there in spots mate. At least you won't have to worry about that on race day. 🤞 Keep up the great work mate! Roll on the Spire Ultra! 😎🤘
Thanks a lot buddy! I'm definitely feeling quite confident now, and looking forward to getting my running fitness up and ready for race day. That mud/poo was a bit of a pain but it goes with the territory I guess lol.
Nice trail Mark! I have seen that train station and some of the other places before. It may had been in one of your previous videos. Your brother needed a large coffee at the half way point. Great day of hiking!
Thanks, Richard. Yes I've definitely featured the old train station previously. My brother could have done with something to give him a boost for sure 😂
Epic achievement, congrats on staying on your feet for so long! I hope your legs have recovered now :)
Thanks, Chloe! I was definitely ready for a sit down after that 🥵😄 I'm going to try a short easy run today as the legs are feeling mostly normal again 😁👍🏻
Good to see you back at it Mark! Looks like you were both blessed with a perfect day and good temps. What kind of park doesn't have benches!!! Hope your brother is ok. Interesting to see how your mood changed as you pushed on. Congrats on finishing it out and good luck in the Spire.
Hey Sage. Thanks a lot man. The weather couldn't have been better on the day. I'm taking a bench with me next time! 😁 My brother is fine now thanks. He won't be doing any long walks for a while though 🙂
Nice to see you back Mark! And what a first video to return with. Well done both!
Thanks, Rachel 🙂 I couldn't do this massive walk and not capture it. Hopefully I'm back in the groove with the videos now 👍🏻🏃♂️
Long time no see indeed! What a day! Well done, glad to see you having fun!! Some beautiful landscapes... And night time hikes always give me some chills. Great blooper by the way 😂
Cheers, Steph 👍🏻 it's good to be back. I did have a few chills when the sun went down. I could barely see the path in places and was praying that my head torch kept working!
oh yah, Mark! Glad to see you back! Have received the notification that you posted something but couldn't watch it as we were with the little one being with a cold around here. Congrats for the 50k buddy! 👏Chapeau! PS: missing the night running from when I was dealing with ultra races...
Hi mate. Hope the little one feels better soon. I'm not sure how I feel about night running 😄👍🏻
@@markg99 she's better, but still home. Next week will be as new ☺️
Great to see you back! That's a tough challenge to start with!!!
Thanks, Dan. I certainly could have picked something easier to begin with 😂👍🏻
So great to have you back Mark! What a wondrous journey! I can't wait for the training cycle to begin!
Thanks, Paul! It's good to be back. It's taken me a few days to get my legs back after that hike but I'm looking forward to starting the training now 👍🏻🏃♂️
@@markg99 I love the first few weeks of a training cycle - it always seems like you make massive gains so quickly!
We could all use a mental break from time to time to refresh, either from work, from YT, and yes even from running 😄. Keep up the nice progress in your training!
That's true. It was literally a nice change of pace 🙂 Great to be out there with some company for once as well 👍🏻🏃♂️
Loved this one Mark, great sense of adventure just getting out there and seeing what you can do over the day. Congrats with it. Haha more wees than flapjacks 😂
Cheers mate 👍🏻 It was a day filled with wees and flapjacks! I'm so glad I got through the full distance in one piece.
The question of whether to go off course to go to a shop was a no brainer, a bit of hot food always wins 🍜 Good to get some company for a good chunk of the walk, hopefully you didn't scare Matt off future escapades! Great bit of endurance training Mark, time on feet & dealing with the mental side of a long day out 😀 This will help hugely when it comes to race day 🏃♂
Cheers Martin 👍🏻 Yes we definitely made the right call, getting some food, even though we didn't want to walk any further at that point 🥵
It made a big difference having someone with me. That never happens. Matt might take a bit of persuading next time 😂
Nice to see you back mate , great effort just think in 6 months you’ll be running that 🏃♂️🏃♂️if you need any help or some company on your training runs give us a shout 😀😀
Yes mate, I'm sure the 6 months will fly by as well. I'll give you a shout about a training run once I've moved house again 😄 nice one. 👍🏻
A great return mate 😊. Such a good idea to get the time on feet and to experience the whole route in one go. Really appreciated you sharing your mental fatigue and documenting your physical changes as the day panned out. Great for your brother to support you like that. I’m sure his respect for what you are taking on has gone up! Now you have the “WHY” to do the Krissy Moehl training plan! She will get you fit enough to enjoy it! Great to see you back on YT. 😊
Cheers Phil! It did turn out to be a really good idea though honestly it started out as a daft whim of my brother's. So glad I went along with it. The confidence boost from almost 12 hours on feet is incredible.
I always appreciate others sharing their deterioration and specifics of what can and does start to go wrong.
I'm sure Matt was slightly in awe of the whole challenge by the time we finished.
Can't wait to get stuck into the training plan. Thanks a lot mate 👍🏻🏃♂️
@@markg99 How did you keep your water topped up in your soft flasks?
@@trailrunningphil I had water in one and electrolytes in the other. In my pack I had two smaller bottles of water totaling 500ml, which I emptied into the soft flask later on. I ran out with a few km to go.
well done !
Thanks! I was so pleased to go the full distance 👍🏻🏃♂️
A long day! Good shoes an essential!
Yes almost 12 hours walking. I was glad the shoes did their job that day 👍🏻🏃♂️
Great video! Very well done! (I’ve also got a brother named Mark.)🎃
Cheers Matt! Your brother sounds like an awesome dude too 😁👍🏻🏃♂️
Good job works well.. stay best connecting
Thanks a lot! 🙂👍🏻🏃♂️
@@markg99 good.. vut happy way keep always best returns well
That's perfect place very beautiful
Thank you. I really enjoyed it, and can't wait to get back out there again. 👍🏻🏃♂️
Strong effort!
Cheers Dan! 👍🏻🏃♂️
Welcome back mate. I really enjoyed this video. Great idea to try to walk the route. It should hold no fears for you now. I recognised lots of places along the way from your earlier vids. I always think it is harder to walk long distances than to run. You started off chirpy, got less chirpy and then chirped up again as you got close to the end. Great video, well done mate.
Thanks a lot mate. I was definitely on a bit of a chirp rollercoaster 😁 I'm confident I can get round the course now. Just need a bit more speed on the day. Looking forward to it 👍🏻🏃♂️
Nice route to do. Hope you get some decent training in.
Cheers guys. First day of the training plan tomorrow. Can't wait to get stuck in 👍🏻🏃♂️
*Amazing vlogs. BIG LK FRD 👍☕🙏❤️💕*
Thank you! 😁👍🏻🏃♂️
Amazing effort! Thought I've got to say, being able to do a 20km easy run isn't exactly "No training" :P
What was your final time? And I was wondering what the flashing thing at the horizon starting at about 24:21 was - it looks like fireworks, but who lights fireworks in the middle of autumn?
Thanks! I guess I was cheating a bit with my running beforehand. In fairness, my brother had no training, which probably explains why he had to pull out with an injury part way round.
I got it done in just under 12 hours. Think it was 11:54.
Those were fireworks. The walk was a few days before bonfire night, aka Guy Fawkes night, in the UK. Lots of people buy fireworks in the lead up to that event and seem to set them off when they feel like it 😄 I only noticed the fireworks when I watched the footage back later. I guess I was a bit tired at the time 🥵 Thanks for watching 👍🏻
when you told the story about your running injuries, i did not understand..........
now i do..........inconsistency and bad decisions are a smart way to get injured
Yes, it was a bit of a push to tackle such a long walk. I probably played down my recent training and fitness in this video. I've been building up the running mileage as a prerequisite for starting my ultra training plan, as well as strength training for injury prevention. I'm feeling strong at the moment, and even though this was a bit of a risk, it was one of the most enjoyable things I've done for ages. Luckily I got through it and got a nice confidence boost. I'll be sticking to my plan from now on.
@@markg99 .....oh well...i am sure you finished your testing of the pose method and have the result videos ready for uploading
...and i am also sure, you could not make any videos because of your training block for the start of your training block
.....your training for the spire has began many month ago....maybe interrupted by once again an injury
.......and for sure you will stick to your plan until you stop sticking to your plan
.......if you tell in advance what your plan consists of and.if you film it and upload it, you can prove me wrong........looking back at the past, 6 months of consistency seems like a very long time
edit: just to make one thing clear, i am sure you will finish the race.....if you are not injured........but i believe in your success for the last half year.......if you don`t make any wrong decisions and get injured
@@justanoldfashionedrunner605 the pose method lessons have transformed my running, and I'm extremely glad I went through that process. I didn't feel that further videos would have added much value. I reached a point where I'm happy with how I'm running and my knee issues are a distant memory.
I didn't upload any videos for a while as I had other priorities, with working full time and moving my wife and children into temporary accommodation while we wait for a house purchase to go through. Internet access is flaky here. It took 14 hours to upload the last video. Given that I get no tangible reward for uploading, I feel that posting when motivation to do so is high, rather than feeling enslaved by the CZcams algorithm is a reasonable stance.
Yes, my training started some time ago. I wrote up a progressive plan to get to a consistent 40km a week, as required by the plan from Krissy Moehl that I've selected. It worked really well.
The plan is from the book Running Your First Ultra. The 50km plan in there is the one. It's 24 weeks long though I've left 2 weeks extra for contingency to allow for holidays, illness, moving house again etc.
I'm not sure whether you follow me on Strava but if you only see what I put out on CZcams I can fully understand why you'd think my running had been inconsistent over recent months.
Injury prevention has to be top of the priority list throughout the training. Nothing else is going to derail things like an injury would. The plan includes strength training, which I'm hoping will help.
Thanks for the interaction as always buddy. Hope you're doing well.
@@markg99 thanks a lot for your long and honest reply. I appreciate that a lot, and i fully understand your reasoning.
I only watch the youtube videos. That is my only soicial media i use, i am not on strava.
I am sure, you will have a successful race, although 40k sound like a little light in volume.
I am fine, i am enjoying my running without racing, mixing in a lot of walking into the running, averaging a total of 105k per week.
Good luck for your house purchasing
