Personally I raise and earthwall high enough to build on top of at least a 20 by 20 square area and put a basement underneath it but that wall alone is fine until you start getting bug raids because they can fly. However the newest raids the lava blobs destroy earth as well so you cant lean on earthwalls which has made me consider the possibility of micro bases with not enough buildings to trigger a raid connected by a network of walls and tunnels with portals.
