    Summary:
    Traveling forward in time is not a problem. You're doing that now. Can we travel backward in time? There is a theoretically possible way to do it using wormholes.
    One solution to general relativity predicts an Einstein Rosen bridge, which is a type of wormhole. If this is real, they could also allow us to travel back in time.
    Einstein’s field equations are nothing but a tool to understand how matter affects the curvature of spacetime and how spacetime affects matter. So we can imagine almost any creative spacetime curvature that results in a worm hole, and then by solving the field equations figure out how the matter in this spacetime must be configured to obtain that desired curvature.
    One solution can form a spacetime curvature that is like a tunnel or shortcut between two points in space. These points can in principle be very far apart in space, or they can also be different points far apart in time. By traversing this wormhole, you can effectively travel faster than the speed of light.
    Caltech physicist Kip Thorne came up with a thought experiment to achieve this: Imagine in the year 2200, we create a stable and traversable wormhole in a lab on earth. We then take one end of the wormhole and place it on a spaceship that can travel nearly at the speed of light. The other end of the wormhole stays in the lab on earth.
    If the spaceship travels at 99.5% the speed of light for a year, according to special relativity, the clock on the ship containing the astronaut and the wormhole will run about 10x slower compared to the clock on earth. This is time dilation. So by the time the astronaut returns to earth, 10 years will have gone by for the scientist in the lab, but only one year will have gone by for the astronaut and the wormhole on the ship.
    The year would be 2210, but biologically the astronaut is only 1 year older. But, because the wormhole in the lab 10 years earlier would have its clock synchronized with the wormhole on the spaceship, even though the astronaut is physically in the year 2210, he could step into the wormhole and land in the lab in the year 2201 because only one year would have gone by for the two synchronized wormholes. He would be able to travel back in time.
    In addition, the scientist in the lab in the year 2201 would be able to step into her wormhole and land 9 years into the future. She could travel forward in time. But by the same token, the same scientist in the lab in the year 2210 would be able to step into the astronaut’s wormhole and travel back in time to 2201 as well.
    If the spaceship could travel even faster, then the bigger time dilation could allow it to end up hundreds or thousands of years into the future, allowing future humans to go back in time to point where the wormholes were first created, and for humans in the past to go to the future.
    Note that you would not be able to travel further back in time than the point when the wormhole was first created. So this may answer the question, if time travel is possible, why don’t we see time travelers all over the place? The answer could be that wormhole has not been created yet.
    How realistic is this wormhole concept? No wormholes have been observed. But in a new paper, Russian astronomers suggest that black holes at the centers of some bright galaxies, may in fact be wormholes.
    Could we create a wormhole in the lab? One problem is that when you create a wormhole, the high gravity near the center, where the tunnel connects the two mouths causes it to collapse as soon as anything enters it. It requires exotic matter with negative mass or negative energy to hold it open. Negative matter is not known to exist, but negative energy may have been observed in the Casimir effect.

    At least this kind of explains why Hawking didn’t experience any guests from the future. I don’t remember when he envited time travellers to join him (20 years ago. ?)He wasn’t afraid of thinking out of the box . I still remember the photo of him being all alone. So I guess it’s fair to say that will not happen soon. Great show 🎸😊🇩🇰⭕️

    It looks more like an entire ship interior was put in a sort of "hibernation" for 100 years. You can observe those molecules as they ageing at 1/100 of your local pace, but it doesn't mean you can send a piece of information back in time though.

      Yes. There wouldn't be any time travel unless you count the people on the ship through time dilation traveling into the earth observer's future. No travel into anyone's past is indicated in this thought experiment. I've always wondered what Einstein and Rosen were smoking when they were pondering this nonsese.

      It seems like, assuming the wormhole had synchronized clocks in both reference frames, the wormhole slowly becomes connected to a different time, so it is possible to go to "objective past", aka spacetime point that can influence yours.

      It's been proven that time can move at different rates depending on your speed. Time can theoretically stop inside a black hole at the singularity. Given this behavior scientist believe time is a dimension on which things can move at different rates and negative rates are not forbidden according to the formulas.

      @@escobyte I agree but only in local space that is not time travel that is time dialation there is a big difference. Time dialation has been proven time travel to the past which doesn't exist has never been proven or even point to be proven with fact based evidence. Universal time is linear it only moves farward, local time is relative to the condition of spacetime this is time dialation. The past doesn't exist this is pure speculation with absolutely no evidence what so ever. Some people and scientists use time dialation to prove time travel this is an assumption. Time dialation is because time isn't a constant according to Einstein. All the fact based evidence points to this time travel to the past is nonsense.

      Time only exists so that everything doesn't happen at once. So the past and future are as real as now and are happening at a different location in time, not space. Like a VHS tape.     I don't think this violates entropy, since traveling back in time before the wormhole was manifested is impossible (nothing that has been done is undone, entropy doesn't reset to a lesser, more stable state), to where any crossing through the wormhole done by the future astronauts on the ship would technically just be the time dilation effect, time may have slowed down on one end of the wormhole in perspective to other , but it never reversed.

      Even after the wormhole is manifested things can change. So theoretically you can change things in the past that (should?) have an affect on the future. I think entropy still isn't violated because time and space are all part of the same universe and theres no additional copy of the time travelers.

      @@escobyte Again, entropy holds because even though it seems like time travel to those relative of the wormhole, the rest of universe itself has not "gone back" or "reverted" to a previous state, the only difference here is how fast the time has moved forward for the two opposing parties on either side of the wormhole, keyword being forward. Even if you have the guys on the ship step through the wormhole into the "past", it really isnt the past, they are just stepping into an area that experiences time at a different rate. One good question I have is if you were peering through said wormhole and there is a time dilation effect, would what youd be see from the wormhole be moving faster/slower, since there's a discrepancy in the effect of time?

    There is an error in the 'holding hands' part, they CAN but only for a short time. As the ship accelerates and the time dilation effect in respect to the outside increases, you cannot hold hands anymore because the people at home, will see the passengers move in slowmotion and if they put their hands in, they will feel a temporal compression. I think temporal wormholes or wormholes entirely, are impossible.

      WRONG. There would be no "temporal compression". If the traveler had one end of the wormhole in their ship and you had the other in your lab staying on Earth, and you could just walk through to be with each other, or talk to each other, you could look at each others' clocks and they would remain synchronous. Time would pass at the SAME RATE for both of you, on both sides of the wormhole. It's just that it would only be 1 year before the ship was back on Earth from that view. In 1 year, the ship would arrive back on Earth from the view through the wormhole, but the person on Earth would be able to look up through a telescope and see the ship barely departed and only 1 year out on its journey, only to return in 9 years more. That is WHY there would be a 9 year difference in time between one side of the wormhole and the other at the end.

    I see two problems with this hypothesis.
    1. The ammount of energy required to keep the wormhole open for seven years would be mindblowing.
    2. It might be imposible to anchor one and of the wormhole onto a ship that is moving at the speed of light.
    Wormholes might be tuneless in space-time that are fixed and cannot be pushed around freely. Moving one and of it might cause the structure to collapse.
    If someone can prove the elasticity of the tunnel in the form of a mathematical equation than we could remove this obstacle from the hypothesis.

      Those aren't the major problems. Wormholes violate causality. If they were separated by significant distances, there exists a reference frame who would observe you leaving the wormhole before you even entered it.

If you can't figure that out you must have some cognitive deficits which also is indicated by your inability to understand my relatively simple point which quite a few others here have also stated. Yes wormholes allegedly can connect two timepoints but in this Einstein Rosen example the time travel occurs because of the fast speed time dilation onboard the ship. There is no violation of causality.

    The amount of negative comments on this video is some what mind blowing to me. It's a CZcams video about something entirely theoretical and many of you act like he's declaring he's invented time travel. We come up with theories and test them to either prove or disprove them no matter how wild they may seem and that's how we advance and make discoveries. To sit there and claim "because Einstein said it's impossible it certainly is" is somewhat absurd. He was proven wrong about quantum entanglement he could be wrong about other things. There's nothing wrong with getting people's minds postulating possiblites and forming their own hypothesis even if they are wrong

      It's worse than that, what I'm seeing are comments that completely don't GET IT. They don't understand why the 2 ends of the wormhole would get out of sync, like they think that the person in their lab on Earth would look through the wormhole and see the person on the ship M oo vvv iii nnn gggg vvv eee rrrr yyyy sss lll oooo www lll yyyy.

    What about "rewinding time" as versus "travelling back" in time. The former would be like running time backwards, whereas the latter seems more unlikely, because it implies your personal time ticks at 1 second per second just as it always has, but all other clocks have "rewound". If time could be run backwards, we would "unremember things" and grow younger, then pop out of existence in a sort of reverse death. What I'm really curious about, is when you play it back, does it play out exactly the same again, or does Quantum Uncertainty cause certain things to follow different paths, very small at first, but as per the Butterfly Effect, events continue to diverge. I kind of hope that is the case, as it means we could rewind, roll the dice, and maybe certain things could go better. Then again, maybe they could also go worse. Either way, we would never be able to know.

    Interesting uses of entropy/enthalpy for energy sums relative that can be reduced to 0 or less in a distinct spot? Sterling engine's /quantum effects/ Casamir effects... To achieve overall energy over time relatively lower than the overall by stealing entropy in a way... From elsewhere. Via magnetic arcing or something of the sort...to avoid slowing the nearby region to the energy surge you would use that as your naked singularity point...?
    I love your video's, are you making an example video about how an observer isn't necessary a live being compared to static matter/energy? I never got to an answer....

      Yeah, well he was kinda dumb in the early episodes tbh. Like in the episode where ship gets stuck in the middle of the stargate and he has to explain newton's first law of motion for the camera, as if he's a freaking genius for just thinking of it just then. Also he always said "solar systems" when talking about alien star systems. It was kind of hard for me to take him seriously.

      @@medexamtoolsdotcom That was the point. In SG1 McKay was a dumbass and only existed to make Carter look good (or even better). In the first seasons of SGA he had to slowly transition from a*hole to a character you could actually like. Leave it to David Hewlett to make this transition look like his character is actually becoming a better person through experience, that's great acting!
      @ScottM: there was an NDA that everybody signed and Carter had a talk with Rodney - he's begrudgingly agreed to keep this one quiet (I think they threatened to reveal that McKay destroyed a solar system)...

    Always love watching your videos. I do want to mention that I think your statements at 11:30 are fundamentally incorrect; if there is another civilization that has already developed a wormhole that we could (in theory) reach and then go back in time to "the now". I'm still banking on this theory so that one day I can go back to the 90's.

      Of course this is true. This is one reason to believe that either there are no remotely nearby alien civilizations, or they have not made such wormholes. But indeed, if aliens made a wormhole pair, and then their civilization destroyed itself, it is quite possible we could find them in space and use them to go back in time billions of years if we wanted. The odds of finding such a relic is low, however, I believe, but then so are the odds of making a wormhole ourselves in the first place.

    Arvin can I ask a question. If you are talking to someone on the other side of the worm hole and time is moving 10 times slower as they are near or at the speed of light. Does this have a physical impact on speech, movement IT systems etc.etc from the observers perspective. Resulting slowed inaudible speech etc etc. May be a silly question.

    8:45 The way Arvin describes it, you travel into the future through the speed of light and only then, travel back by others than yourself will be regarded as traveling back in time as ironically you offered 10 years of your shared life with your family to make time travel possible for others.
    If I understand correctly, traveling back in time is therefore a forward only event, a breadcrumbs approach to find your way back from a future to now, never from now back into the past. That’s quite the futuristic letdown and welcomed into the same hall of fame as flying cars and the like...
    11:15 I was just too impatient... but at least I understood correctly... ;-)

    It seems to me that Einstein's equations measure the effect of matter on space time but do they really tell us HOW practically matter effects space time? Do the equations tell us what happens to the space inside matter, say inside a planet or star, or a kilogram of iron or lead rather than just around large amounts of matter like near a singularity?

      Well if you assume matter is just made of more matter then in theory they do. The beauty of general relativity is how... generalized it is... in theory you can find solutions pertaining to such complex systems, its just insanely difficult.

      In the most abstract sense, no, the equations don't say HOW mass affects spacetime. But that's kind of unimportant. That's like complaining that we don't know HOW an electric charge generates an electric field, or complaining that we don't know WHY a changing magnetic field generates an electric field. At some point you must simply accept that it DOES, or else physics can go no further.

      @@medexamtoolsdotcom Actually our whole 150 years of technological development come from knowing how to generate and control electric, electromagnetic and magnetic fields, Surely if we understand how matter interacts with spacetime that could lead to the unified field theory everyone is looking for. It may also lead to a whole new paradigm of technologies for travelling through spacetime. Surely anything that even vaguely resembles all those scifi warp drives can only happen if we figure how to curve and shape spacetime. General relativity, it seems to me is the equivalent of a voltameter as opposed to a circuit board.

    You forgot to mention that calculations by Thorne, Hawking and others seem to strongly indicate that wormhole time machines are unstable. That is, they seem to self-destruct at the moment when the wormhole is just beginning to turn into a time machine. An additional you didn't mention is that one of the major challenges is, not only holding the wormhole open, but how to "punch the hole in space" necessary to form the wormhole to begin with. (More technically, how you achieve the "topology change".) There are some old theorems proved by Geroch that demonstrate some of the severe difficulties in trying to accomplish that. You gave a nice description of forming a WH time machine using the twins. Nice description of Thorne's argument.

    Good Video Arvin Ash. If such a worm hole can be created in future like shown in the animation then if the Star ship is at Alphacenturi a person has to just step into the worm hole from a station in earth and reach there in seconds. But Worm hole will have to opened and closed Immidietely after use as it could consume lot of energy and precious exotic matter and even if at Earth we may have the required energy a travelling space craft may have limited energy. It will be the ultimate in transportation of people and material in seconds from one part of Universe to other. A person who just to go into future can step into the space ship and come back after an year and vice-versa.

    I love your videos. You are able to present complicated ideas really simply. That means you understand them properly. Therefore I am sure, you also know that - if Einstein's theory is correct - FTL travel or FTL signaling is impossible, regardless of the many mathematical papers on various warp-geometries, wormholes etc. The fact is that superluminal travel implies time travel and creates not only paradoxes, but as a consequence, problems with causality too. Consider two events (given by their space-time coordinates,) one is a button press (as the cause), which emits an FTL signal, the other one is explosion of a bomb as a consequence (the effect) of receiving this FTL signal! According to Einstein if these two events are observed from a spaceship traveling below light speed in a suitable direction the explosion may come earlier than the button press. And this is completely independent of the method the signal travels.

      Why would the signal traveling FTL mean you'd detect the explosion first? The effects of the explosion would be at less than c so the causing signal would always be first.

    Considering that the Wormhole Containment Device (WCD) is a Star Gate - I don't think we have to worry about time travel too much - you can't hold it open for more than 38 minutes! Everybody knows that - right? Also, next time: use the Tria as a ship - the Lantean systems are a bit more efficient even at sub-light speeds (don't worry, it's still out there waiting to be collected - you can get there via the Gate bridge). ;-)

    Some cosmological theories like the causal dynamic triangulation don't allow worm wholes. What is your opinion to concepts of time travel in such alternative theories? Are they in principal possible? Could we e.g. create curvatures of spacetime by using "pure" information (and not large amounts of energy)?

    I once read this concept in a sci-fi roman by Stephen Baxter where they put a wormhole end in a generation ship and sent it on a 1000 year journey (the ship itself travelled 1000 year in view of the ship) to create a passageway to 1000000 years in the future to check on the sun which was aging too fast. was very interesting, especially the part to see the social structure changing, warping and disintegrating over the 1000 years.

    The Tomorrow War time travel uses the same principle, using an established a worm hole to travel back and forward in time, eventhough the time on both side of the worm hole are ticking forward at the same rate. When the existing two worm holes are broken, the time travel between those two time periods end.

    Interesting video. But couldn't there still be paradoxes? In the portal wormhole experiment, what's to keep the astronaut from returning to the lab, pointing a gun through the wormhole and shooting his former self? Then the astronaut dies and can't return to shoot himself. It's things like this that make me skeptical time travel to the past is possible.

      Yes, these are things that have to be considered. There is likely something that would prevent you from doing that. The timeline has been set, so the past likely has a causality barrier that prevents it from changing.

    So, if you're on the ship and looking into the wormhole the lab would appear to be moving in fast forward while the view of the ship from the lab would appear to be moving in slow motion. Going from one to the other would be like jumping between state borders, "I'm in the present, now I'm in the future, now I'm in the present. Now I'm in the future again. WHEEEEE!"

      I think the real answer is that no one knows what sort of limitations such an object would actually have, since we have no such objects to experiment with.
