This trip with these students would be her last trip to Auschwitz in 2014. Surprisingly, Kitty is still alive (age 94). I highly recommend reading her book ("I am Alive"), if you can locate it, which was published a mere 15 years after she was liberated giving readers a fresh, first hand account of the atrocities that occurred.

There is a documentary with Kitty from 1985 here on youtube. She shows the camp to her son and I also recommend it because back then there weren't thousands of tourists obstructing the view and she basically walks through an empty camp. BTW Kitty used to swim a mile a day when she was in her late 50s and exercised every day. I bet she continued it as long as she could. That's why she is so energetic today. Can I just say that the teens with her are smart and full of empathy? That's some good parenting right there.

The black smoke became thicker and darker and choking, bringing with it a most peculiar smell, that of burning bodies, a smell of singeing chicken would be comparable, but this stench of burnt fat and hair was unbearable. . . . As evening came, the whole sky was red, as if lit up. Smoke and flames poured out of all the chimneys which surrounded our little camp. It seemed as if blood was coming out, as indeed it was." ("I am Alive", Kitty Hart, 1961, p86). The brick would crumble. She seems to have copied stories from Krystyna Zywulska’s “I Came Back” (1951) in her own book. She tells tales (on TV) of eating from a bowl containing poo and pee. I wouldn't care to try the experiment, but I'm pretty sure that's impossible.

@@StephenCowley001 I see what you mean, and yeah it does seem a bit impossible to eat out of a bowl containing human waste but at the same time a lot of details about the holocaust seem a bit hard to believe. Honestly the reasoning for that though is because of how inhuman the nazi party treated people that they felt deserved it, even though they were just as human and you and I. Considering the fact that disease was so common in the concentration camps I think eating out of the same bowl you defected in doesn’t seem too far out of the realm of possibility

@Allen Attoni Almost dying from a gastrointestinal bleed, I can say that hunger can easily make you go mad. Was only allowed an IV with saline, blood transfusion, and some water to sip and take meds with until they could do a scope and get the bleeding under control. Even after being allowed clear fluids, certain vitamins and nutrients become lacking and you CRAVE desperately certain foods. You would eat anything they give you, even if it tasted so bad that you might vomit, and I have had some nasty chemicals I needed to drink slowly for scans (the one tasted like spoiled/moldy fermented peach drink, and had to drink over 1 Litre of it slowly over an hour) and I would have gladly ingested them if offered. That was only a few days in a similar medically dire state (thin and with dangerously low hemoglobin/blood, loosing vision when trying to stand or walk).
Even with that, I really can't imagine what going like that just barely sustained for months... But I can completely agree that hunger can easily be the worst. It becomes so painful, mentally AND physically. You feel like you are wasting away, you literally feel it with every breath.

Hunger is something that is crippling so I do understand that someone would say that, because I felt like every part of body was in pain, I believe that the pain people feel is because your body is breaking up any fat because you haven't eaten and that in itself is horrendous, may they all rest in love and I hope you are better now. Sending blessings to you.

My great grandmother and great grandfather were both in Auschwitz. They died when I was very young maybe 10 or so and were both around 90 I don’t remember really, I don’t think they really remembered either. I saw the marks on their bodies and the tattoo on their arms. My great grandfather couldn’t speak and my great grandmother chose not to. The 1 time I asked about the tattoo on my grandmothers arm as a curious young child she just grabbed my hands and started crying and the only thing she said to me was “it was a long time ago, and hell can’t compare.” Never understood what that meant until I became a man and studied the war. I don’t have any stories from them or anything 1 because my grandfather couldn’t even speak and 2 because I don’t think they wanted to even put the idea of what happened to them in my head. But I did find out later in life my grandfather couldn’t speak because his tongue was cut out. And my grandmother only had a few fingers because as punishment for accidentally touching an SS guard as he walked by them in line they cut her fingers off. And apparently they did it 1 knuckle at a time because some of her fingers that she had left were missing a knuckle or 2. That’s all I got from them or anyone that knew about their past. It is astounding to me the level of depravity human beings can go to. Imagine, someone brushes against YOU and because you didn’t move they cut your fingers off 1 knuckle at a time. Or because you made a sound when not supposed to they cut out your tongue and burn the stump so you don’t bleed to death. Imagine being a twin, and having your body mutilated for the thought that your genes could help mass produce a specific race of people. Imagine being a baby boy and being tossed into a pot of water along with a baby girl to see which 1 of you will drown first based on your gender. Or having your entrails cut out while you’re still alive just so they can see differences in size and shape and color and whether or not you will die with your intestines hanging out of your belly. I mean has anyone actually sat and thought of the sheer evil these people were? And these “doctors” did a lot of these things in the “name of science” in order to create a super race of aryans pure German white people immune to all common diseases and things like that. Mutilated and tortured and killed by the thousands just for that reason. Not to mention the ones who did it for fun. Jesus man. I hope hell is worse for them than what they put these poor people through.

Lt. Col. Ellis and Lt Perl of the Prosectution pleaded that it was difficult to obtain competant evidence. Perl told the court, "We had a tough case to crack and we had to use persuasive methods."
He admitted to the court that the persuasive methods included various "expedients, including some violence and mock trials." He further told the court that the cases rested on statements obtained by such methods.
The statements which were admitted as evidence were obtained from men who had first been kept in solitary confinement for three, four, and, five months. They were confined between four walls, with no windows, and no opportunity of exercise. Two meals a day were shoved in to them through a slot in the door. They were not allowed to talk to anyone. They had no communication with their families or any minister or priest during that time.
This solitary confinement proved sufficient in itself in some cases to persuade the Germans to sign prepared statements. These statements not only involved the signer, but often would involve other defendants.
Our investigators would put a black hood over the accused's head and then punch him in the face with brass knuckles, kick him, and beat him with rubber hose. Many of the German defendants had teeth knocked out. Some had their jaws broken. All but two of the Germans, in the 139 cases we investigated, had been kicked in the testicles beyond repair. This was Standard Operating Procedure with American investigators. Perl admitted use of mock trials and persuasive methods including violence and said the court was free to decide the weight to be attached to evidence thus received.
One 18 year old defendant, after a series of beatings. was writing a statement being dictated to him. When they reached the 16th page, the boy was locked up for the night. In the early morning, Germans in nearby cells heard him muttering. "I will not utter another lie." When the jailer came in later to get him to finish his false statement, he found the German hanging from a cell bar, dead. However the statement that the German had hanged himself to escape signing was offered and received in evidence in the trial of the others.
Sometimes a prisoner who refused to sign was led into a dimly lit room, where a group of civilian investigators, wearing U. S. Army uniforms. were seated around a black table with a crucifix in the center and two candles burning, one on each aide. "You will now have your American trial," the defendant was told. The sham court passed a sham sentence of death. Then the accused was told, "You will hang in a few days, as soon as the general approves this sentence: but in the meantime sign this confession and we can get you acquitted." Some still wouldn't sign. We were shocked by the crucifix being used so mockingly.
In another case, a bogus Catholic priest (actually an investigator) entered the cell of one of the defendants, heard his confession, gave him absolution, and then gave him a little friendly tip: "Sign whatever the investigators ask you to sign. It will get you your freedom. Even though it's false, I can give you absolution now in advance for the lie you'd tell."
      - E. L. Van Roden, "American Atrocities in Germany", The Progressive. February 1949, p. 21f.

When my youngest child was about 4 or 5 we saw a man in front of us at the checkout at the grocery store. This elderly man had numbers tattooed on his arm. My son saw this and asked me what that was. This kind man turned to my son and explained as simply as possible. As he was talking to my son, tears were forming in my eyes. He took my hand in his and said " do not cry. I was one of the lucky ones- I survived. I was the only one left in my family." That hit me so hard. We read about this in history. But the reality was strong once I saw those numbers. You hoped it was not real but it was- it really happened. We went home and I cried for all those who lost their lives to a Jewish man who hated Jews. I tried to explain this to my son. It was very difficult trying to explain this to a child.

She was so stylish and poised that she caught my eye. Then she put her arm up on the bus railing and the coat slid back to reveal a crude numbered tattoo across her forearm. Growing up, reading about the Holocaust, I always thought those things were small, close to the inner dip where your arm bends to your elbow but it was huge, scrawled across her delicate skin. I was so taken back because I've never seen a survivor with my own eyes before. It was a really humbling moment as I imagined what he life must have been like to bring her here to this little moment on the bus. I'm glad she appeared to be thriving. A lot of angry people that preach free speech seem to forget that fact. As a bonus, if they keep it up and keep getting reported, their account is revoked and therefor they have to go through the process of making a whole new account.
CZcams ALSO can easily track someone's identity with the I.P. address they use even if they try making a new account. The actual I.P. address can be blocked.
