      Somehow I never liked how SonarWorks "flat" sounds, I have much better sounding measurements with ARC. But I agree, after having speakers and headphones corrected for some time now I have difficult time listening to anything else. 👍

      @@BojanBojovic I think flat speakers aren't supposed to sound better, they are supposed to sound accurate so your mix can be eard better in a multitude of speakers and headphones. What I do would is to listen to a song which I really like the production and sound, ear it on a calibrated flat response speaker or headphone, and then try to mimic my mix to sound similar.

      I honestly don't like flat response speakers or headphones or anything, specially because of the tendency for producers to over emphasize bass, so I have my own EQ setting I like and use to listen, but when "producing" I use flat speakers and work my sound from that.

    I started using Sonarworks last winter in my 11” x 18” music librarian day-gig office. I went all in for the Premium bundle which included custom-calibrated Sennheiser HD650s. After calibrating my Audioengine A5+ desktop speakers w/ the mic as directed, it was startling how different “flat” was to what I’d been used to hearing & I fell in love with it in no time at all.
    With my day gig on COVID hiatus since mid-March, I’ve had my home studio back up & running since May in a 10’ x 10’ bedroom. I’d been enjoying how the Kali IN-8s sound for months & finally reinstalled Sonarworks for the HD650s. This ha s whet my appetite for getting a bunch of boxes out of the back of the room so I’ll have enough space to do proper speaker calibration.
    Also, I freaking love the Switch Witch & run 3 sets of speakers & a sub through there. Kali IN-8s, Kali WS-12 sub, Avantone Pro Active MixCubes & the aforementioned Audioengine A5+.

    True story... I actually got tears in my eyes when I first used Sonarworks! 30 years of "not ideal" rooms and the frustration of never knowing what I'm actually hearing. I also have IK's ARC 3 and recently tried Dirac Live - all three give similar results (no surprise!) but Sonarworks is less prone to over/under correction. Three thumbs up!

    Great job for bringing this to your audience! I've been a big fan of this for 3 years now. Used ARC for years before and was frustrated that I could only use it as a plug-in through 2 buss of my DAW. Having the ability to have ALL the audio coming from your computer (regular internet browsing etc.) corrected was a game changer for me and really helped me to learn my listening set up properly. There is also the listening position correction which calibrates any small differences in the output between your monitors at the listening position which for me really improved my stereo picture. It's a great tool which I recommend to everyone I meet. And no, I don't have any affiliations to Sonarworks! Props to them!

    I've been using Sonarworks for a couple years. Before using it, I had already treated the room extensively. I observed many of the same issues Warren pointed out due to my desk. SW really helped flatten things out and took out that horrible "nose" sound in the mids. I also have SOFFIT boxes so I put a my bookshelf consumer grade, front ported KEFs in the soffits. They sounded horrid at first. After shooting them out with Sonarworks I was amazed. They sound fantastic! They are now my "C" speakers. If anyone has mid field SOFFIT speakers, try SW correction. I find myself listening to the soffit KEFs much more these days.

    Hi Warren I'm a PLAPer. I use Sonarworks 4 after seeing your earlier demo. I use Logic X with Totalmix (comes with any RME interface). Pleased to say I'm delighted but you need to carefully consider routing on my setup. For the headphone I use the plugin on an output channel, for speakers I use Systemwide. My room is 7m x 4m but only 2m high so weird standing waves was a biggie. I have some acoustic treatment.
    Huge warning: Switch it off on your speakers when you're recording, as the latency is... big. But switch it in for mixing - perfect. Setting it up takes a while but is fun! I have reasonable speakers (Rock Unity 2) and AKG K712 headphones for mixing.
    All in all highly recommended for the money.

    Great timing- I just calibrated my home setup with Sonarworks a couple weeks ago. I'm working in a small space with walls nearby- lots of reflections and bass buildup. My speakers are set up decently well, but the are slight timing differences due to not being perfectly aligned. Turning on the calibration makes a significant difference in the stereo image- it brings a focus into the center that I didn't realize was missing. Controlling the bass allows me to hear the mids more clearly, and the sweet spot in my listening position is larger. I've been working with these speakers every day for about 2 years, and with calibration it's like having a new set of speakers. I definitely recommend it for those who are working at home.

      Sonarworks does nothing to reflections, and does nothing to time domain in low frequencies which is maybe even more important than so called flat response.. if it works for you, great, for me, i hear those filters.. and for me naked speakers and MORE treatment makes way more sense than just using sonarworks, though headphones is different story, i like my hd650 calibrated.

I cannot work without it anymore. everything translates really well and I get stuff done in a more fun, fast & easy way (which is what it's all about imho).
    I call it the 'poor man's Genelec GLM' (meaning it saves you quite some money compared to getting the GLM version of the same monitor: 8350 in my case, AND having to buy the GLM kit additionally also!). but there's nothing 'poor man's' about it, more like 'smart man's' GLM, AND it does headphones as well.

    There's a thing regarding waterfall charts for different monitors and as is said with the sonarworks getting a flat frequency response is helpful. It may be thought it would be not to get a set of tannoy reveals as they have a big bit on the bass on the waterfall chart from there ports. But as is done there when you boosted. The tannoy's could be of help to get the balance between the kick and bass I kind of thought that before aswell but good to see that yourself boosted the bass a bit from flat and it's useful

    I would advice to be careful with the "Linear Phase" mode because it does introduce A LOT of pre-ringing. It might not be too noticeable in a busy rock mix but it is very obvious in an electronic style track with maybe a hard kick with a lot of low end. You'll find your self wondering where the hell is the transient of your kick sample hehehe. I just use the zero latency mode because it may change the general phase of your mix but in the end it keeps translating very well.
    Having said that: Sonarworks Reference is AMAZING, it will change your mixes for the better.

    Hi Warren! Once in a life, i would like to see a measure after the room correction. I mean, when the corrected sonarworks works on the audio output, you measure again with other tool (or sonarworks if it possible), and if it will be near flat, the correction is working.:-) . Always check the result, until it's a game stuff...

  • @Charlyfromthenuclearcity

    I get the thing with Sonarworks because it facilitates the process a lot. But if you get a 40€ measurement microphone and Room EQ Wizard, you can do some pretty good job for almost nothing.
    Personally I tried a match EQ technique (matching recorded pink noise from my speakers with pink noise from the DAW), and it worked pretty well ! Also you can fine tune it after by playing the pink noise through the EQ and checking the result on an FFT (you can use a free plugin like SPAN for that).
    Hope this can help some people on a budget ! :)

    I've also been using sonarworks at about 70% mix. When at 100% it sounded way too weird and sterile. Good to know my instincts/ears were right since you also use them at around the same mix setting.

  • @uwebaganz5144
    @uwebaganz5144 Před 3 lety

    You can also use RoomEQwizzard and a e.g. Behringer messuring mic, and for example use vixengo curve eq in the control room of cubase, that way it gets not printed, in some daws you have to bypass it in the master if you export your mix - but even that way it's really worth it, of course sonarworks is more elaborate and better, I would also like to have it, ohh I forgot to mention that online you get many frequency response graphs for headphones, so you can flatten it yourself with an eq to a degree

    Really impressed with the LP6’s and the correction software. I’m wondering if the calibration switches on the speaker should be set flat, I guess the calibration software will just compensate for whatever they’re projecting so it’s kinda immaterial! Great video thanks!

    • @MarcusJayMusic
      @MarcusJayMusic Před 3 lety

      I’d do an initial measurement of the speakers in the room, and then do some basic correction on the speakers (if they’re bass light, boost on the speakers) and then remeasure so that the software isn’t working too hard. You’d rather not have the software compensating 12db in the low end, as it’ll require a 12db cut in output signal.

    I have an interesting observation. Even though I watch Produce like a Pro videos quite often they do not appear on the page when I open youtube as much as I expect. That is one observation. Today, none were on that page. The next observation is that when I go to where the filters are and (this morning I chose related topics like Audio Recording and Reproduction or Audio Production and mixing, I STILL didn't see Produce Like a Pro in the options on those pages. I had to actually search for Produce Like a Pro by name. I am subscribed to the channel and new videos do appear on my opening page, but it is strange to me that even after watching a couple of the Produce like a Pro videos yesterday and the day before that, none appeared on the home or filtered pages today.
