    People commenting on the loop's efficiency compared to randoms and dipoles apparently have no idea over conditions in a city/apartment, not to mention HOA restrictions. A loop is a godsend design for people like us, and when properly tuned and amplified, they work wonders. You may not be catching any Brasilian AM stations, but they still offer some great DX opportunities.

      Agreed! Yes, some obnoxious know-it-alls wish to remain ignorant of both some of our housing and HOA restrictions as well as the limited physical capabilities of some of us that keep us from hanging off ladders 20 feet up. Yes, mag loops can help us out.

    Matt, what is the net effect of winding the outer loop (tuned element) of the antenna? Can you reduce circumference for say a 80m - 40m MLA by coiling? I've seen online calculators that imply that loop circumference is critical to the antenna efficiency at any particular frequency (along with the diameter of the loop material). Can you somehow net a more compact loop for lower frequencies? I assume that there is parasitic capacitance when you do so?

  • @BrokenSignal
    @BrokenSignal Před 3 lety +1

    Being directional then having to tune the antenna would get old, but if space is a concern this would be a great option. It would also work good for people with deed restrictions/HOA. But man, that is one nice looking loop!

    • @adrianoragazzo1321
      @adrianoragazzo1321 Před 3 lety

      Nay, you don't get old because you get used to it . Also the magloop let you listen...where some ( because the noise ) classic aerials fail.

    I have one of these and it works well, mine is in the loft and right next to a velux window. only downsides i can see is its not waterproof, so not suitable for full time outside and the switch has to be manually switched to extend the range.

    I wonder if this type of antenna can help people get around planning regulations? Would such an antenna be measured by local authorities by its diameter or circumference? Another thought I had is that a very fast spinning magnetic loop antenna could be omnidirectional.

  • @sagebrother
    @sagebrother Před 2 lety +1

    I have the AlexLoop (for SOTA) and the Ciro Mazzino (spelling??) Baby loop. While I like them one huge drawback is the obvious need to retune when changing frequencies which makes contest participation painful. Another big limitation is the inefficiency of a loop at its lowest operating frequency (7MHz in your example) and I suspect that this one is no different. Final comment is the peak angle of radiation in the vertical plane is quite high (~40-60 degrees) making DX more challenging. FWIW I think using at ATU a big “no no” with a loop given the sharp Q of a loop.

    I just purchased one of these today on his eBay page , the reason for purchasing was down to the stable looking design, I have home-brewed a few using old radio capacitors and various coax , aluminium loops but my efforts were always substandard, some day I will invest in a 3d printer . I wonder if you have done any follow up videos with good band conditions, could also be used in conjunction with Xphase QRM Eliminator as your aux input to get rid of bad over the horizon qrm radar/woodpecker/ noise as well as local noise in both horizontal and vertical positioning

    I have the same loop bought from 2E0ERO earlier in the year. Initial setup indoors just behind the patio doors gave better results than I was expecting despite it being stood on the floor. As soon as time allows and the weather improves I'll be mounting it on a decent portable mount and getting it a little higher of the ground. General consensus seems to be 1m to 2m so I plan on using a tripod that's easily portable. Did you try it at different heights?

    • @TheMariepi3
      @TheMariepi3 Před 2 lety

      test it by placing the two loops parallel to the ground, that is, horizontal: in theory this will be omnidirectional but it will only pick up the signals that arrive from the horizon (which are the interesting ones) and not those that arrive "below" the horizon, thus it will capture less radio noise generated in the population's homes.

    I find the interest in small magnetic loop antennas baffling for anything other than just as a recieving antenna..The radiation resistance is sooo small that it cannot be efficient as a transmitting antenna especiall for QRP....What am I missing>

      With my FT-817 and this loop I have worked plenty of DX You are missing the the fact you have not tried one!

    • @jimgraham6722

      They in fact work very well provided they are optimised. The important thing is to balance area inside the loop vs current in the loop conductor while minimising Ohmic losses. Making it circular optimises area inside the loop and a circumference of about one eight wavelength gives plenty of current. Two turns reduces diameter that can be useful for covering lower bands, and/or intensifying magnetic field but reduces capture area. Inter turn capacitance can become an issue. Most designs settle for one turn and confine operation to 40m and above.

      Peoples were used to say : Oh flying ? Nah, not possible. Now : it will NOT be the same as a classic and well placed dipole, no. If you wanna better energy transfer then you'll have to make it with a physical coupling and not the small ( 1/5 of the main loop ) loop but the downside is the noise, wich is bit higer than the small loop coupling ( of course the downside is bit less energy transfer but better "noise cancelling" . Gain ? The same, it will NOT gain as same as a well built and placed dipole BUT it's VERY silent and this let you listen the fleeble signar from far, far away... Try one if you can, trust me .

    NO NO NO NO, you don't use an ATU with a magnetic loop. The loop will not radiate properly if not tuned correctly and an ATU will not help.

      I add a few NO NO NO NO NO's. that is a big NO NO to use a ATU with a loop, never do that

    • @electrocity2000
      @electrocity2000 Před 2 lety +2

      Actually, you're wrong. You can tune a loop with the capacitor and get the best swr you can. The ATU will then match the impedance.

    These are very expensive for what they are and perform worse than a random piece of wire and an LC tuner. We know this because a friend had one and did A B comparisons. The reverse beacon network also helped with the tests. His loops must have the worst efficiency of any loop on the market. The diameter isn't big enough and that normal air spaced capacitor will also be extremely inefficient. Expect between 1 and 3% efficiency. People say loops work, and yes they do, but a wire tuned with a simple LC circuit works much much better, and that's saying something. Don't waste your money people.

    Maybe you should not so painstakingly try to avoid mentioning pricetags.
    Its a lot of wasted time for people just to find out and research if they can afford an item.
    the antenna built by 2E0ERO looks outstanding and sexy. and i would prefer to support a small eruopean workshop (even if it is in uk who dont like rest of eu anymore)
    over a big firm from the states. UK > US - any time of the day (sorry yanks, but the us-definition of quality does not align with my stars, nothing personal)
    On the other hand.. its probably not in my budged do i even bother confirming that in an email dialog? probably not.
    Your channel would instantly become more useful to your viewers if you would not leave out the most important detail missing from all your vids i watched thus far :-)
    - subbed anyways, but i thought you needed to hear also the truth between all the well justified 'yesman' posts :-)
