I think the most innovative game in the genre right now is "Let's Make a Bus Route" by Saashi & Saashi. While each player has a personal board to mark stuff, there is also a shared map players draw on together. This creates a lot of interaction as each player attempts to navigate the map to reach various stops and mark them off on your personal board. It is on the lighter side of the spectrum but it plays quickly.
Unfortunately, this Japanese game does not have international distribution. The games comes with English rules so you can get it from import retailers like boardgamebliss and nicegameshop but you will be paying import prices.

For what it's worth, I played Ganz last of those three and it's definitely mine/our favourite in the house. The other two have the main difficulty that their respective rhythms will make you more frustrated at the end (as a result of inevitable failures) while at the point in Ganz when that might happen (you have less options) you get the cascade of bonuses.
In an ironic way I feel the better you can sense the numbers for "qwinto" and "welcome to" the worse they seem to be because the puzzle is a bit more obvious to unpick - you know where you should put 1, 3, 7, 15 etc. On the otherhand Ganz seems to hold its mystery a fair bit longer (and having an objective barometer of the quality of your win in the back of the rules is really good for the game too).

Watched this video when it came out. Forgot about it. Played a couple of roll and writes over the next two years. Decided to add some to my collection. Coincidentally they happen to be Qwinto, Welcome To and That’s Pretty Clever. Randomly stumble upon this video and I feel like I have a bigger trust in Efka than ever before, there were many roll and writes which I didn’t care for.

Omg, Efka, this whole video is me 3 weeks ago.. I seen a buzz building up around Ganz Schön Clever and although I'm usually more into heavy and euro games, I ordered it. Before this only roll n write I have played and own was Saint Malo (which is good but bigger, not really a travel or lunch break game), and when It came and i started playing, I was literally like you in the opening of this video, I simply couldn't stop, I think I played at least 15 games in a row.. I was instantly hooked.. Now I wanted them all.. I have looked a few videos and started ordering.. And then.. The problem..!!!! None and I meen none other roll n write game managed to scratch that same itch as Ganz Schön Clever, ok some came close like Noch Mal and Octo Dice but even they were inferior to GSC.. I'm hoping I will some day get my hands on Steamrollers couse that one looks like it could be great but for now for me at least Ganz Schön Clever is the best one out there.. Definitely deserves its Kennerspiel nomination :)

Efka, like a sausage joke, you are the wurst! Had been eyeballing both Castles of Burgundy Dice Edition and GSC, and since you provided links to easily pick it up on amazon... then of course most people buy 'The Mind' when they buy it, so of course that had to go in the cart as well... unfortunately that meant stuffing the cart fuller than a membrane filled with mince.... and the sausage jokes come full circle... like boerewors

...and I just bought three more of them. Granted, some of them are "flip and write", but still the same mechanic. Random result, mark your sheet. I think they're just getting to the point where some really interesting games come out with this mechanic. And look, you were on the cutting edge!

King of Tokyo has the dice (though Welcome To and Kokoro both use cards for their RNG) but it doesn't have the box-filling part - what you do with one round does very little to limit you next round.

I can appreciate where this is coming from! But... I think "too much randomness" is a bit of a sweeping statement. It's not the randomness I dislike, it's how the design utilises it.

I am a wannabe hardcore gamer. The kind of guy that has a closet of games (gameboardgeek type games) But struggle because 1) family man with kiddos. Limits options #2) collector addiction. if something is new and hot.. I gotta have it. even if I do not have a play group for reasons above. All that said.. i really enjoy you're vids. My wife is not a gamer and plays along. my son and daughter LOVE games (I>e king of tokyo) but are limited due to their age. (10-12yo) So thank you for giving me options. Standing in my closet is a copy of Twilight Struggle for example. Too much for the kids, and me getting lucky with my wife trumps me trying to force her to learn that game. #thestruggleisreal.
