    She sits by the window
    I sit by the aisle
    The hostess pours the drinks
    With a practiced smile
    We talk about sunshine
    As we touch down
    Now we are the foreigners
    And you’re not around
Divide by eight, multiply by five
    Counting kilometres
    Trying to translate
    Is this what I wanted?
    This twist of fate
    Watching people take pictures
    With expensive cameras
    Through dirty windows
    Of foreign cars
Divide by eight, multiply by five
    Playing with a calculator
    I’m counting the cost
    I feel so cheated
    At every border cross
    I’ll send you a postcard
    I wish you were here
    You think that I’m joking
    I’ve never been more sincere
Divide by eight, multiply by five

Why does he sing "Divide by eight, multiply by five"? What does it mean in these lyrics?

@@michavandam yes, this is one of my favorite lyrics Charlie wrote. He’s always at his best writing about what he knows. It is an observation about touring in Europe. “People taking pictures with expensive cameras through dirty windows of foreign cars” refers to the time I bought a cannon camera to take photos on tour. “I feel so cheated at every border crossed” refers to the customs crossing points back then, before the EEC. Between the exchange rate and the fact that they don’t exchange coins left you financially diminished and at the end of the tour pockets full of coins. We referred to those coins as shrapnel. I almost never post on CZcams and such, this is perhaps the 2nd time ever, but I was just showing my wife part of my younger life she is unfamiliar with and this song seemed a good example. Way more than you asked about, but there it is.
