- Learn how to spray Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan in this tutorial with Annie Sloan and Ron Taylor from Traditional Painter. This advanced painting technique is a quick way to paint, particularly useful if you're painting a row of kitchen cabinets. Here, Annie and Ron are using a HVLP (high volume, low pressure) spray gun, the Wagner 2370386 Studio Home Décor Sprayer.
A spray gun works by combining pressurised air and paint. The paint is atomised into small particles which are sprayed onto a surface.
It’s a quick and effective way to paint in large quantities, for example kitchen cabinets, but does require forethought and preparation. If you’re a beginner we recommend painting with Chalk Paint® first.

Annie Sloan invented her revolutionary furniture paint, Chalk Paint®, in 1990 and hasn’t stopped refining and improving her formula since. There's no need for priming or sanding. Chalk Paint® is as easy to use as opening the tin, dipping your brush, and applying paint to furniture! Annie wanted to create one paint that could achieve several different techniques and finishes - from creating a textured chippy look to achieving a smooth modern finish, or even creating a wash. Annie's paint has minimal VOCs and is very easy to work with.
Hi Annie, Just came across your you tube videos and what a breath of fresh air! I was only looking to spray some drawers, but now I want to paint everything. Seriously you come over as a very genuine lady with knowledge to impart. Congratulations. An absolute pleasure to learn from. Not at all like some of our USA presenters attempts.
Thank you. Jon Moore.
This was so interesting... Thank you! Annie needs to do a collaboration with an eyewear company! I adore her so much. Sending love from South Carolina. ❤️
Great idea!!
You Rock. Keep those videos coming! Was that a special kind of sptrayer? 🙂☺️🙂☺️
Excellent instructions. Thank you.
Do you need to do anything to the wood before you spray it? I am painting a piano that is varnished wood. Thank you! This video is so helpful :)
You're the best teacher! Thank you so much'''
Great teacher!
This color is Fantastic!
So pleased you like it!
I wish it could of show a closeup of how the paint got the perfect consistency
Here's an easy test. After using a stir stick to mix the paint and water, pull it out and let the paint start streaming back into the can. After the initial streaming it will start to drip. Look for one drip per second ... that's a good consistency for most spray equipment.
Beautiful
Thank you for this video! I will try your paint on my next project 😊
Please do! Let us know if you have any questions.
Thank you Annie and Ron for sharing this it was very interesting and I do love a spray painted finish XX
Great video very useful information. I was just wondering if you can use any other spray set ups and what size nozzles are best for Annie Sloan paint and lacquer?
Any quality spray system should do, although we prefer using an HVLP system. I typically use a 1.4mm tip for paint and a 1.2mm tip for clear coats, but you should experiment to see what works best for you.
What is that color? Stunning blue, close to periwinkle, my favourite color aong with 1930's green.
Sooooo very helpful
Awesome! Love it!
So glad!
Is chalk paint lime based?
Thanks for interesting video - I'm a newbie - have just spray painted my fireplace blue - Do I need to seal it ? If so what do I seal it with - been told not to use wax - thanks
Hello! It is not necessary to seal the paint on a fireplace surround, but you can if you would like. While wax may not be the right choice,, you can use Annie Sloan Lacquer. -Jen at ASI
Annie Grazie mille
Bloody Nora ..is like Quantum Physics! I'll use a brush!
Really interesting thanks. What are the benefits of spraying paint rather than brushing or rolling? Thanks
There are several. 1) It's quicker when you have lots of surfaces to cover, such as cabinet doors and drawer facings. 2) It's easier to paint a surface with lots of nooks and crannies, such as a very intricate mirror or even wicker. 3) It creates a very smooth finish without brush or roller marks. The Wagner Home Decor Paint Sprayer that we used in the video is fairly inexpensive, easy to set up and clean, and well worth a try.
Interesting!
Glad you think so!
Will this work on fabric like upholstery?
That is a very good question! I can't see why it wouldn't, but I would suggest testing it before trying it on your project if possible.
So nice. Any link about spray gun please?
Hello Adamos, Spray guns will vary depending where you are in the world, the best advise I can give is to test your sprayer before applying paint to your piece.
@@AnnieSloanHome thanks dear annie.
What paint sprayer do you recommend
Hello! We recommend an HVLP (High Pressure Low Volume) sprayer. In the video, we used a Wagner 2370386 Studio Home Décor Sprayer, but depending on your area, there may be other good options available. -Jen at ASI
Who would have thought they made paint sprayers for vacuum cleaners.
What kind of spray paint ?
We are spraying Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.
@@AnnieSloanHome So sorry I meant what kind of spray gun. But after looking at your website I saw the name of the spray gun. My apologies for a non sense question. Thank you.
What is the name of that beautiful blue color please?
That is our beautiful Napoleonic Blue colour. So glad you like it.
@@AnnieSloanHome I just asked the same question. So happy to have the answer. 🙏🙏🙏
Which make of spray machine did you use? X
We used the Wagner 2370386 Studio Home Decor Sprayer.
Annie Sloan it’s a nice gun but parts are not replaceable as out of circulation, even from the manufacturer Wagner . Please can you do a video on choosing the right gun, that would be great because you do lovely paint and it would be a shame for people to buy this gun then be disappointed.
Dommage que le sous titrage en français ne soit pas accessible.
Je suis d'accord, mais c'est tellement difficile lorsque nos vidéos sont visionnées dans le monde entier. Nous sommes vraiment désolés.
Is this minecraft?
So instead of actually showing you are talking thru it. Very helpful. Wait. Not at all 😂
Sorry but this is a pretty terrible instructional video. Fancy not showing people the inside of the paint pot to show the worm trails changing, getting paint consistency right is one of the main reasons people get poor results. Also the guy only showing the paint flow adjustment and only breifly showing the paint fan adjustment and only when you asked about it. Finally his technique was flawed, always spray any grooves and edges before spraying the rest of the door, so that detailing on the doors inner panel should of been sprayed first. When making left to right or up and down passes ease off the trigger at the start/end of each pass otherwise you will get a build up of paint on the sides of the doors.
For manufacturer and supplier of paint you could of done far better, more camera angles, show detail on each step.
