      The problem is the psychological drama is isolated from the character's respective pasts. Its too easy to forget that both characters are cold blooded killers, when you listen to them talking. The dramatic moments in the Expanse where these characters show their ability to kill... are just moments.
      When you are in the company of killers, EVERYTHING takes on a different context, and its not simply a matter of characterisation and individual style. Killers don't have different masks that they change to suit the moment... as actors do.
      A killer is always a killer, like a creep is always a creep, or a thief is always a thief. Killers never switch off their tactical mode. They are always sizing EVERYONE up as a target. Distances, surfaces, obstacles, exits: They can never afford not too, and many do not have a choice. They don't know any other way to interact with people.
      This means that EVERYONE they interact with, is always slightly dehumanised in their eyes. They may be able to mask it if they are clever, but that just places another layer of BS between them and real life: another element that can go wrong. This is one of the many prices a killer pays to keep breathing.

    To be clear, Naomi's problem with Clarissa is not her relationship with Amos, it's the fact that she's murdered numerous people, tried to frame Holden for murder, as a result almost got the Roci and everyone on it destroyed by the Behemoth's torpedo, and personally tried to murder Naomi with a mech suit.
    Also, I would say Duarte in the show is still depicted as quite sincere and respectful - to all those worthy of his respect (in his eyes). Laconia has no patience for people they view as ungrateful terrorists and malcontents. They have no respect for Marco's faction, simply using them as a tool. I don't really see the on screen portrayal as at all inconsistent with the books.

Often characters do stuff that people seem random and it ruins them. That happened with game of thrones. It started great with nuance and characters reacting to things that happened in the show. They had this idea of characters doing certain things that did not seem properly motivated and thus did not seem to fit where the characters were in their development and story arch. Instead they should have likely changed the end game to give characters an arch that seemed fitting.

      @@NoWacko It wouldn't surprise me if behind the scenes, it was a victim of Bezos' and Amazon's obsession with having "their" Game of Thrones. Despite the series having every bit the potential (and actually getting finished) to be a GoT contender, Amazon snatched up the IP and tried to go cheap with ten-episode seasons, gimmick release schedules that were obvious attempts to nickel-and-dime Prime subscribers, and left the series almost completely unsupported on the marketing and merchandise front.
      Season 4 I suspect didn't meet expectations -- which how could it have, it was set up to fail -- and they finished out to season 6 out of obligation. As everyone with a pair of eyes can now see with Wheel of Time -- and what will certainly be the case with Rings of Power -- Amazon Studios has no patience or faith to let a series develop if it isn't an immediate smash hit.

It's not just a character growth, but also perhaps a jadened Holden who realizes that if he doesn't take the presidency of the Transport Union, they're just going to pick someone far less capable anyway just to make sure the have that person under their thumb, as often happens with people in power. So instead, Holden has to take the position to make sure the one person who is capable gets it. That's what pisses off Avasarala the most, I believe, as now she doesn't have someone she knows and can manipulate, and instead has to deal with an equal.

      @Roberto Vidal Garcia I love sci-fi...books...movies... and TV. As I have gotten older and much more busy in my career and home, it has gotten more difficult for me to watch shows with whole series story arcs like The Expanse.
      Now, for my sci-fi fix, I would love to have a great sci-fi show that you can just pop in and out of but still enjoy it. This was much more difficult to do with the Expanse because if you leave that show alone for a few weeks, you really have to take time to refresh yourself on the details so you don't get lost. I think that what most people mean when they say it is "too dense." I think most casual viewers and sometimes even diehard fans just want an hour of stand-alone fun a some time.
      I really appreciated the Expanse's deep arc. I think I even watched the whole first 3 seasons but got turned off after they seem to have thrown Naomi's son into the mix out of nowhere. That son seemed almost as old as her and the whole story was seeming kind of a little crazy to me. Did they end up handling it well eventually?

      What irks me a little is that the Expanse books are kind of the blockbuster movies of the sci fi book world and with their success as a tv show they're what a lot of people now associate with literary sci fi, because the genre still has a 'kid adventure,' populist stigma attached to it. When science fiction is just a setting that allows authors both literary geniuses and mediocre to creatively mirror modern society without the restrictions that come with mandatory plausibility in regular fiction.

      Replacing an actor for one last season would be too distracting tbh. It always throws you off even when character was only present for a small part of one season, with 5 done? That would draw too much attention from the plot to one actor specifically. If they already knew they had to film one last short season (and ignore the fact he'd have to be present in 3 more), killing him off was pretty much the best decision. Although i'd say keep him for the last season, 6 episodes is not that hard to tolerate.

      @@johncunningham4820 there's another problem: book 7 takes place about 30 years after the end of book 6. In fact, all books 2-6 take place at least about a year after the end of the previous, but this is a small enough gap to adjust for / ignore. When there's a 30 year gap, it's much harder to account for the lack of aging in the actors.

    • @jacobmacock
      @jacobmacock Před 2 lety

      The time skip in the books is my main guess. It was kind of a good place to leave off but there were probably other reasons too.
      There was the entire Alex-pedophile debacle and as the SA Corey duo are friends with GRRM, I wouldn't call it far-fetched to say that they'd rather leave off on a strong note rather than keep going and risk a crappy conclusion that ruins the show as a whole.
      I'd rather see a decent end over something that drags on forever and sputters out pathetically.

    • @BigMikeMcBastard
      @BigMikeMcBastard Před rokem +2

      @@mihaitha They take anti-aging drugs in the novels. We've already heard in the show how the average life expectancy on Earth/Mars is 100+. Audiences would be fine with minimal effects due to aging. Alternatively, or additionally, they can just change it to a 20 year jump for the show. Either way, acting like it's the reason to not make further seasons is a bit off the mark I'd say.

    • @Power5
      @Power5 Před rokem +1

      I have not read the books, but could they not just shorten that gap to 5 or 10 years, for the show, instead of 30 like the book? That would be easy enough to age the actors. Would not be the first thing changed for the series from the books.

    Just finished this beautiful series last night. I'm amazed I had never heard of it... The representation of many things in space are just so well done I can't believe it's not the standard.
    I loved the characters and I'd wish they would continue the story

  • @WhitefoxSpace
    @WhitefoxSpace Před rokem +2

    My only two gripes with the entire series is 1) the cliffhanger ending: they should've left Laconia out and spent that energy on the actual storyline of the show; and 2) that Marco wants to control the Ring space for belters - and then is defeated, for the story to instead install Drummer as the controller of ring space for belters. Like the end is pretty much the same it's just a different person in charge, and I would've enjoyed seeing them comment on that a bit more. This entire war was so that no one person would control Ring space, and while it's cute to call it a "union" - Drummer is effectively still one person controlling ring space.

    Hands down, one of the most gorgeous intelligent shows to ever grace Sci-Fi (or what pretentious people call basic science-fiction these days). The Expanse didn't hold your hand or rely on magical science fantasy or double talk macguffins to advance the plot. It's best appreciated with an understanding of basic physical science. The brutality of humanity v humanity was always it's core theme. Certainly the recent headlines of Eastern European conflict can only emphasise the relevance of how far political ideology can go to dehumanise the human condition. Please let this not be the end of what we shall see of The Expanse. My compliments to a job well done to the cast and crew of this amazing show!

      I mean it's a greatshow and series, but it's one of the more contrived things I've ever read. You most certainly do not need any scientific background to appreciate "Too much energy and everything dissolves" or "Sudden deceleration kills everyone...except for all of our named characters!"

    • @sammerry7706
      @sammerry7706 Před 2 lety +1

      I mean they kind of ignore travel time and how huge space is towards the end for convenience sake and the entire climax is just a 'mcguffin' that naomi figures out in about three days that they use technobable to explain how they conveniently trigger forthesake of the plot. Season 4 was stunningly shot and pretty tightly written as was season 1 as far as i remember but the writers rushed and gave up with the other seasons and they clearly didnt have the budget cause the cgi looked truely aweful quite often.

    • @RedSaint83
      @RedSaint83 Před 2 lety +1

      @@sammerry7706 It's still tying a nice bow on Naomi's storyline. If you watch the series with her as the main character it all makes perfect sense IMO. In season 1 she asks Fred Johnson for the "find my son" favor, and it ends in season 6 with her using the Gamarra code to blow up her baby daddy and Filip (at least she does from her POV, not knowing that Filip escaped). I very much enjoyed it, even though one can pretty easily poke holes in the "energy threshold waking up the entities" theory as you mention, but from a space opera/drama perspective, it's pretty much a perfect end imo.

      @@RedSaint83 sure there's some great character work in some of the seasons and dominique tippers acting at the death of her son is EXTRAORDINARY but to me its important to put the work in to reach those character payoffs in a satisfying and well written way and they couldnt put the time or thought in they needed for it. Cant agree it was a perfect end cause that would mean it couldnt be improved, however the final scene with holden and naomi i genuinely love and it hits the feels but one good scene reached poorly cant fix it, season 4 was the peak for me by some margin.
