Basilan - You Won't See This On The News In The Philippines (MUST WATCH!)

  • When it comes to news about Basilan, almost 100% of the time it is going to be about Abu Sayaff or Terrorism. Unfortunately those things do exist in this part of the Southern Philippines and need to be reported and shown to the world. But saying that...
Those things really don't represent the 500,000 people who call this part of the Philippines there home. For many people in Basilan, life isn't about terrorism... Life is much different. I had the chance to go visit Basilan with local connections (including armed security) and I just wanted to share with you "the other side" of this beautiful Island in the South...
A side that is unfortunately overlooked and rarely shown in media due to the Abu Sayaff.
This is the happy side of Basilan.
    Super Apir!
*** If you are a Foreign National I have to be realistic in saying you really shouldn't go to Basilan unless you are connected locally, guarded, and with people you really really trust. Even though you will see lots of happiness and beauty in this video, I literally had armed military with me and was with well known local friends. This isn't a "tourist spot" for foreigners to enjoy at this time. But hopefully some day in the near future :)

I stayed in Basilan at a bad time. I was there as part of a special action forces battalion sent to fight extremist rebels. As I was sent there to fight I could not help also but to admire the beauty of the place, the beaches are so pristine and crisp white, the people are friendly, and the best seafood I have ever had anywhere in the Philippines. Too bad it has such a bad rap with all thats going on around that place. You are a brave, brave man to go there Kulas... and oh by the way, that Jollibee in Isabela is such a big surprise for me because one of the hardest battles that I have fought in happened in that place. Kudos to you Kulas! Suroy pa more! ❤😊

This is amazing cause we've been receiving so much negative news from the media and we need videos like this for people to see how beautiful Basilan is. My heartfelt thanks for this video Kyle. It brought back my sweetest life experience and it happened in Basilan. Years ago, I attended a friend's wedding in Zamboanga City. Unbeknownst to me, a student of mine from Basilan waited patiently outside the hotel where the reception was held. As I came out from the reception, he surprised me by holding tight my arm and short of pleading asked me if I would like a short visit to his place in Basilan. He assured me that I will be safe. I tried to hide my worries about safety but I believed in him, so we went. I have no idea what his place looks like. He is a Tausog and I found out that his village is on a reef; with houses on the stilts interconnected with narrow wooden planks with most stretches without hand railings to balance. I had the impression that everybody in the village knew of my arrival as many people look out of their windows and watched me trying to manage those narrow bridges. I felt so humiliated watching an old lady (probably in her '80s) walking on a plank nearby as if she was on dry land. I shared a simple lunch in their simple hut and pleasant chat about their daily life. They treated me like royalty and with so much respect that I felt I was welcomed in a palace. It was too late to go back the same day to Zamboanga City. My student booked me for the night in a hotel not too far from the village. Again, I was assured for my safety. A relative of his (who has a high rank in the "rebel" group will be in the next room as my personal guard). I don't even have to register in the front desk for everything was already arranged. I sincerely stated that I wanted to meet his relative but he wished that I rather not see him for his safety. I took some pictures around the village before I said my goodbye. I am now an American citizen but when times get rough and to ease myself, I just daydream that wonderful experience. I still remember it like it happened yesterday.

I've been to Basilan twice and I remember the first time we went to Malamawi Island. We took the habal-habal route to White Beach. To be honest, at first I was feeling quite nervous because we were told at that time there were still isolated kidnappings of local people in the place but I was praying in my heart for a safe journey. The feeling I got when we passed by the outskirts of Malamawi was indescribable. The view of the beach was amazing. The clouds and the sky was so beautiful it hurts! I have fond memories of Basilan and Zamboanga. I can't wait to go back there in the future.

Wow kulas! I have been following and watching your videos since day 1 of your journey and honestly this trip from Basilan is definitely my favorite! Coz you know,We know only a few about Basilan and some of it negative as our local news only covers about the fighting, bombing and the bandits..i could'nt even remember someone as brave enough to stay there and cover the whole island, that just sends a chill on my spine after reading your caption that you're actually in "Basilan". I was like wow Basilan? Really?
Actually part of me envy how lucky you are to explore parts of our land that most of us locals from the other island would'nt even dare to try. Basilan maintain its prestine features because it has not been commercialized. Our thanks to you Kulas for taking as to where our mind restricted us to go. Makes me wonder Kulas why most of our kababayan from these provinces not only from Basilan but other beautiful provinces migrate here in Manila where it's so crowded, crime infested and they end up hungry, homeless and most of the times victimized. There is not a lot of opportunity in Metromanila specially if you have no education most of them end up being maid, underpaid and physically and mentally abused. Maybe you can shed light to this people when t b ey see your example. Thank you for all you are doing, also promoting tourism to the Philippines, God Bless you, be safe.

As a Filipino myself, I have been wondering to what is in the South most of our archipelago. And it makes me want to go there with what you have shown here. MABUHAY KA, Kulas! You never cease to amaze me. In my book, you already are Filipino, in heart. Thank you for striving to see the beauty in every corner of the Philippines that you've visited. Thank you for not stopping there and going so many steps further to show what you've seen for yourselves to many others in the world, including us actual citizens of the Philippines who have not had the opportunities and privileges you've had of seeing the places and people you've visited. DAGHANG SALAMAT!

Hello!! Not too many youtube vids of Sulu so Thank you. I.m Fil/Am & traveled with a kiwi friend 1999 to Sulu Arch. & couldn't go to Basilan because of conflict at that time, but managed to ferry to Jolo, then eventually to Sitangkai. It.s a real pity after watching your video how beautiful Basilan is! We got interogated in Jolo by the military police and had to be escorted through the island by the military and local police.... long story short, we didn't get a chance to mingle with the locals because of the military escort, so lots of tension everywhere we went. Sitangkai was more fun for us. Happy Basilan is open for travelers and is thriving. yey! i have very distant relatives there through a grand uncle from Cavite.

I am originally from Balingasag, Misamis Oriental (born and bred), and have never been to Western Mindanao (farthest I've been was Dipolog and Dapitan) because of all the 'bad things' I hear on the media about this side of of the region. Funny how one person who happens to have a non-(typical)Pinoy skin (but clearly have a big Pinoy heart) would be the one enlightening a misinformed local like me.
