- Another installment of space news, let's see if we can make this a weekly event this year, after all we expect enough launches to keep me busy. At least that's what I thought, only 3(!) launches this week and one of those was happening as I recorded.
If you want to see more of those amazing images from Juno, check the Junocam page:

The thing i LOVE about Scott, is that he doesn't adhere to a schedule. When he's got something exciting to tell us about, he just tells us! No "i'll post this for my next scheduled video," you get it hot off the presses, as it were.
Fly safe, you magnificent bastard, fly SAFE! ^-^
Pretty cool stuff. And, as a guy who watched the Apollo missions live when I was a kid (and skipped school sometimes to do so), I will NEVER get tired of watching a booster recovered by landing back on a pad or on a freaking barge! That is some science fiction reality I did not anticipate in my lifetime. Thanks for including that clip.
Io's surface has to be one of the most fascinating surfaces in the solar system. Look at those features and colors!

I wouldn’t worry about making this a weekly thing for what it’s worth. I’d much prefer the videos appear when you think there’s enough to talk about, yeah?
But the algorithm doesn’t like that. Fortunately Scott may not care too much about- he clearly loves his day job at Apple
Completely agree
I'm on both sides of the fence. Sometimes it might be a slow news week and there won't be much to talk about. Sometimes Scott gets busy and/or procrastinates, and we end up with a dizzying amount of information stuffed into the video.
If there are interesting details to talk about, like in this episode, not having to rush through many things with all of them just getting a mention in passing is nice. But that may not be true for every single week.
Took me a second to process the title, thought it said “Cosmonaut will spend three years on Volcanic Moon,” lmao
Respect that cosmonaut
You can go to Iceland instead.
❤️🔥😉
I hope it won't make Ionians too angry. Not all like long term visitors from Earth
Lmfao 😂😂😂
Russia really took a leap in space exploration
Look, if Matt Lowne can make a 30-minute video talking about a screw that was found at Starbase and what this could possibly mean for the future of Starship, you are most welcome to make shorter Deep Space Updates no matter how much or little there is to talk about.
Matt Lowne, relegated Artemis 1, to second billing on the day that it launched, giving the most coverage to some random Starship update...
Who cares what that fanboy clown thinks?
matt lowne will pump out a video about anything as long as matt lowne gets paid.
just like the rest of the ex ksp youtubers.
is why i only watch scotts videos anymore.
@4:53 "...over 1100 days in space" OMG! Anyone that's read Scott Kelly's memoir "Endurance" knows that Oleg Kononenko is gonna feel a LOT of hurt once he returns to Earth. Good luck to him!

Scott, the image of Io illuminated directly from the Sun and back illuminated by the reflected shine from Jupiter is truly amazing. With regard to the Axiom mission to the ISS the Scottish expression “here’s your coat, what’s your hurry?” captures the essence.
Amazing images of Io. Wow!

Great video, as always! I have a suggestion: consider using chapters for your videos on deep space updates
Agree. Chapters
Darn! I was hoping the title meant a cosmonaut was going on a 3 year mission in space. That'd been so cool to see if humans could survive in microgravity in space for that long continuously.
Me too. Come on Scott, don't do clickbait, you are better than that! 🙏
Go PACE !! Global hyperspectral data coverage is amazing 🤩
Speaking of Juno and the moon Io: We are still debating on the true color of Io.
NASA seems to have claimed that the older "Bright Yellow" image of Io by Galileo is its true color. But the new images from Juno after processing suggest that, in truth, Io is a more muted orange world with mostly-whitish yellow sulfur frost. I wonder if this will result to another "Neptune's true color" scenario.
What is the color of frozen sulfur that's been enveloped by electromagnetic radiation?
How is this a thing? (Genuinely curious) I would imagine spacecraft cameras are among the most carefully calibrated in existence.
@@michaelrcolton Dr Becky covered that in detail czcams.com/video/zKSWcFCMrGU/video.html
Sulphur changes colour with time from yellow to a darker orange depending on allotrope composition which has eight different forms.
Still looks quite yellow to me 🧐 being a bit too picky about the color honestly, if you looked at the earth and said "it's blue" you'd be right for 70% of it... But it isn't all blue.
2:25 That footage of ignition and the second stage being absolutely FRIED was awesome! Never seen it so crisp.
EDIT: The top of the first stage got fried
Yeah, they upgraded the 2nd stage cameras a few months ago. The footage has been incredible.
You mean the top of the first stage got fried, right?
@@franklinmargolis2051 oh yeah, thanks
Thanks so much for creating and sharing this informative and timely video. Great job. Keep it up.
I was looking for images of Io, according to the video title, but then Scott delivers a full palette of space news. He does not disappoint, it is a delightful full blast of space news!
Thanks for the updates scott, youre the best
Thanks for all the news, Scott! 😊

Never stop doing what you do Scott. Absoutely incredible videos. Much appreciated
Thank you Scott, always like and appreciate your updates. Cheers,
Enjoy these updates Scott hope you keep doing them🙃👍
Ooooh, good timing on the pointy finger Scott; we were properly sync'd up! Juno imagery was superb, and I can't wait for another Moon landing attempt - exciting stuff! Thanks chap
Axiom 3 - I am ever so slightly bummed. With the delays I lost track of when they were returning. I'm in Tampa. I heard the sonic boom Friday morning. (It sounded like something very heavy dropped from about 5 meters.) After a moment to process this, I though "AWW! I missed it." That being said, I did see the last Crew rotation return. It came in at night. That was glorious.
4:20 what did you expect to see? Jawa's looting the parts? 😆
HAHAH!
That's NASA's real plan for finding life on Mars- leaving tantalizing bits of scrap that the locals won't be able to resist yoinking

Again? Just finished watching the last one. You're on fire!
Fantastic, Scott! Once, every week...Yes, please!!! : )
Those images of Io are amazing. Planet Yellowstone!
For me it really doesn't have to be weekly. i like your no f*** given attitude compared to all the tryhard living off it influencer CZcamsrs and your random cadence kinda is part of that
And, this way, the vids are always pleasant suprises. (News on a schedule/deadline is often just a bunch of filler, rather than the always-interesting vids on this channel.)
Thanks Scott!
"It's time! You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here!" Notice how Scott's brogue really kicks in whenever he impersonates a publican. One might think he's been on the receiving end of that command! 😄
Futurama reference?
He used to be a DJ, presumably in pubs or clubs. I bet he heard that a lot.
Closing Time, by Semisonic: “Closing time, one last call for alcohol / So, finish your whiskey or beer / Closing time, you don't have to go home / But you can't stay here”

@@dancoroian1 I've heard it but in the context of gospels and it was way different 😅
Great video. Looking forward to seeing this every week if you can pull it off.

LINT ROLLER
The pin fell out a fraction of a second after the SS2 was released. They're lucky it didn't puncture an oxidizer tank or damage the engine bell.
I think we've already learned that anything on Mars with propellers, needs longer legs, that keep the drone up higher above the ground, and extend further out from the drone, to make sure it doesn't tip.
Scott, you are the man!!
Scott explaining that since it’s only been a week, there’s not too many launches to cover. Goes on to describe three launches!
Not too many years ago there might have been three launches globally over several *months* not days! :-)
I work at JPL, and needless to say, this has been a horrible week. It's very devastating for morale when your livelihood is at the whims of politicians.
I’m an Australian and even though not American I certainly feel for all you wonderful people JPL: you are all spacecraft heroes! I truly hope they go onto other wonderful roles. Best wishes to all from an old “Apollo era” dude who loves your work
@@longboardfella5306 Thank you very much! From what I understand, there's a lot of companies out trying to hire them so I'd be surprised if they're out of work for long. Still, a lot of people at JPL passed up better paying opportunities etc to work there because they love the mission and what we do so it'll probably be a loss nonetheless.
...they finally opened the OSIRIS-REx canister..it didn't look as full as I was expecting
Scott, thanks for the "space" update!
Thanks mate.
good reporting, thanks
Scott, love your stuff. Would also love to hear your take on the ways to transfer fuel from one spacecraft to another with an emphasis on how those propellants settled. Thx
I love your channel!
I like the weekly reports.
I don't want to pull armchair engineer over here, I'm sure it was considered thoughtfully by the team and they pulled off a great mission up to this point - but the crash seems inevitable in the dune environment. Steep slopes, shifting surfaces, low contrast surface to identify slope... Clipping a rotor seems like the inevitable result of trying to set down in those conditions.
Nevertheless, great work by the little helicopter.
"Point to point cargo using rockets"
First thing I can think of is "How much is SpaceX or Bezos gonna charge for Amazon Prime "Next Orbit" delivery?"
I'm sure there's more useful ways to use it right now, but I'm not even sure what kinda cargo they would want to ship on that.
I'm glad they're working on containerization tho, that's gonna come in handy when we need to start supplying that moon base that NASA wants (and the Mars base that Elon keeps dreaming about).
Ocean color satellite sounds really cool
Images of Io are amazing.
Regarding your recent video on space advertising, at 13:59 of this video, we see an ad for Columbia outerwear!!

Congrats to Oleg Kononenko! I remember seeing him all the time when I used to religiously watch NASA TV, probably during Expedition 30/31. What a modest response, he had.
Scott, I remember a little while back there was a time when there were three or four people all named Oleg on station at the same time. Was he one of them? Do you remember when that was?
2:46 Should have called it Ocean Colour Seeing.
Deploying reentry vehicles into unimproved combat zones…
So Orbital Drop Shock Troopers? I mean if you mass produced a reentry vehicle it might get cheep enough to do this.
Especially if one just crashed them into targets (as manned 'god rods') rather than trying to land them safely.
Literal Starship Troopers. 😄
There were some impact marks via one of the original photos from the craft after it hit the dunes ! Don't know if that was the impact or a rough landing after initial hit or loss though
FYI: Geely owns Volvo Cars and is the majority holder of Volvo Trucks.
Hey Scott, I have been trying to explain to friends all about space x and falcon and starship etc, and because they’ve never heard of what’s been happening I’ve been wondering if you would be able to do a start to present video covering what they need to catch up on? I’ve been watching your channel for a long time and already have my head around everything space x, if you were able to do a video to catch people up I can get them all to subscribe to your channel and they will be up to speed and carry on enjoying the future with you!! I bet the subscriptions will skyrocket!!
Would be fun if the assassins' target was announced to everyone. That might balance it a little bit.

I feel like the more evidence for potential life in the solar system is more likely to be found on moons than planets. It’s like the universe is just playing games with us puny earthlings at this point.
Well, the old mystics are saying that the whole universe is alive anyways.

How about a video about the particles added to the atmosphere from all the burnt stuff on re-entry.
What are burning tonnes of stuff up there often now. With atmospheric satellites as good as they are , and knowing where they re-enter , we can see changes . Are the commonly used dumping areas seeing different weather. If you can say , Its such a small amount it doesn't matter, we already know it logically does. Could you do another amazing video, on this subject, someday?

Hmmm... I probably Saw witness marks at the JPL... oops !! Sir !!
Point to point cargo - isn't that what the HASTE program is about? I mean, at least partially. HASTE has all kinds of potential applications, but at least one is for P2P cargo I'm sure. With a small rocket like Electron (at least one of the testbeds) you don't send very much, but it has to be an attractive option for DOD to send men/materiel to the other side of the world in under 2 hours. Probably more like 24hrs if you consider that you'd have to have rockets staged and ready to go at a moment's notice, and then cargo has to get to launch facility and be loaded / integrated and so on. Isn't it Firefly who's also taking part in a similar program?
And thanks for the updates! Weekly is good. Lately I've been watching DAILY updates on the Gaza war with @TBNIsrael. Keeping up to date with lots of info is good for us! Us retired types anyhow... =)
