    She just wrote a book last September titled: Superman's not coming, our national water crisis and what we the people can do about it. I was lucky enough to find it in the library. A lot of what she talks about here is in the book, in detail. I recommend getting your hands on it (or at least looking up superfund sites). As a US resident you might be surprised to find out about your town. They really could make a few more movies or a sindicated series if you think her movie was bad news.

    For clarification, at 1:47 she says 'they hired an emergency manager' ... the 'they' is not the city, but instead the state ... and it was an appointment.
    EDIT: As noted by @TELEVISIONARCHIVES the city council did vote to change the water over from Detroit water (DWSD) to another, unfinished water supply (KWA), and thought that their local treatment plant could handle the Flint River water between the shut off of one and the start up of the other. What the emergency manager did was block the city government from switching back once it was clear there was a problem.

      +SubHek No they weren't...they were getting their water from Detroit who had a handle on how to treat the type of water that was being delivered via the old infrastructure. When Detroit jacked the rate up to a price that Flint couldn't afford, the Flint River was the fallback option.
      Nobody was trying to privatize water in the PENINSULA of Michigan...the one surrounded by fresh water...five lakes in total.

      The water system in Michigan is one of the finest in the world. This happened because they wanted to save money so the governor of our state could prove you can run goverment like a business. FYI the high lead levels in Michigan water are from bad pipes in older commuintys it's not in the water here in Detroit area or Detroit water and sewage authority
      ( were Flint was and is again getting it's water for 50 years) because they treat the water before it goes through old pippes. I live in the suburbs were all our pippes are newer and fine.

    The public outrage in Flint is more than a violation of trust. Beyond that, it questions the ineptitude of the people we've elected (or appointed) to decide our collective fates. "You're doing a heck of a job, Brownie," comes to mind.

    A big problem with what she said about the city hiring the EM. That is false!!! The EM was forced upon the city by the Governor of Michigan. This same Governor said he would fix it and own up to the decision that switched us to use the river. Now the river water was not the problem. The problem was not treating that water properly with the correct chemicals. The Flint river water was safe and still is safe to be used. Trouble with Flint's water woes actually started back in 2012. With things popping up in the ancient supply lines coming out of Detroit. There is so much more to this mystery than we will ever know. We still don't have drinkable water coming out of our taps here in Flint.

    people can also distill their water several times and toss in some sodium hydroxydes or peroxides to make some of the metals precipitate for quick results, than filtrate, make sure the pH is neutral and all the peroxides are gone before using it. A third pretty safe solution is to freeze water vapor from the air take a big surface area bath tubb or kids swimming pool. Hang over it some cooling elements of an old refrigirator (make sure the freezing surfaces are clean) and let the water vapors from the tubb/pool evaporate and freeze to the cooling elements of the refirgirator. That ice is freshwater without any metal (!)-contaminants. If how ever there are other volatile contaminiations in the water (like ammonium, methanol, HS - hydrosulfide (rotten egss smell)) they may NOT get out by this method, depending on the contanimants.

    I live in a country notorious for its poor water we all either boil our water or put special filters in our homes. Also, there is the possibility to buy filtered water for cooking and drinking. And very sadly it is a planetary crisis. I imagine Erin has been very busy considering this interview was 7 years ago!!

    This is not a partisan issue. Although the Republican governer can claim most of the blame, the recovery should have no debate. Republicans and Democrats agree, this needs to be corrected and the victims cared for. I don't care who is to blame honestly, and I don't care which party finds the solution. It just needs to be fixed, and if there was an ever an issue that Democrats and Republicans could agree on, it should be this.

    • @ThePanicPuppet
      @ThePanicPuppet Před 8 lety +25

      I felt the same way, until today when it was revealed that the governor lied that the water was safe last January, while simultaneously sending purified water to state workers in the city of Flint so they wouldn't have to use the lead-contaminated water.
      That's pretty fucked.

    • @TonecrafteLuthiery
      @TonecrafteLuthiery Před 8 lety +3

      ThePanicPuppet I didn't deny that governer Snyder is to blame, and I would like him to resign. My point was that both parties agree that this needs to be fixed, and we should focus on the relief effort.

      +George Mason quit this "both sides are to blame" bullshit. These infrastructure issues constantly happen in conservative areas, not because of freak accidents or natural occurrences, but because conservatives believe in "cutting back" on government money, even at the cost of health and safety. Quit the bullshit. Everyone knows who's to blame.

    Flint. That's such a great name for a disaster to happen. When they named it they probably said to someone "there's probably gonna be like a drought, or a water contamination here sometime", and they said "why?" and the founders said "cause it's named Flint! What else is ever gonna happen here?"

      +Valter Östberg If you ever get into esoteric symbology the name provide far to much information. Just look up the first woman to be cured with ZMAP for EBOLA(her name Dr. WritEBOL only thing her name is missing is the A for it to say directly W or double you rit EBOL which means to hex EBOL which means she should know or have the cure to Ebola). If it where like the president names like Clinton or Bush which both mean to cheat/fishy esoterically this is why Jesus/Messiah is back as Pisces which is represented by 2 fish which don't worry 2 fish means to hex fish/cheaters/people rigging your environment from the top down like CLINTON(which means cunt on or to set a cheat/help with what the architect in the Matrix calls the remainder of unbalance equation=no justice because your lives are being rigged from the top down you don't really have choice but you probably don't know how pointed my statement is) you see it in BUSH another fishy name along with FISHER & HAMILL funny how both of their last names in real life mean the same thing. The fishy situation this World is in is also called the curse of HAM which is what Egypt was first called the land of HAM until the curse of HAM by NOAH(you see this in Heroes Reborn if you watch it let me know I can point you to things that they should not have known to put in a tv show especially when I can specifically point to where they got their information in real time just like the names they picked for characters).

    They were not lead pipes. but the sections were held together with lead solder. The $100 a day they saved was the cost of the chemicals that coat the pipes to prevent the lead from the solder to leech into the water. The corrosive water from the Flint River disolved that coating because they stopped using those chemicals, to save that $100 a day.

    I was actually JUST thinking about Erin when this Flint Water crisis blew up more in the news (Al Jazeera reported it looong ago.) I actually read her autobiography. She's a tough woman. Side note, her boyfriend at the time she cracked the case (the one who was portrayed as this gentle loving bike rider) was not such a good guy. He was actually being paid to babysit her kids and he wanted a shitload of money for the rights to portray him and then complained he wasn't portrayed well. I think he sued her too.

    The USA has (since the 80's) taken the trickle down effect and ever since then our infrastructure has been neglected due to not getting taxes from the rich. It isn't a coincidence that all these things are happening around the same time. All the years of not having proper level of technicians, inspectors, equipment, repaired/maintained, not replacing pipes, not replacing old electrical grids, etc. Please for the love of the USA start taxing the rick and higher the proper staff to rebuild our now destroyed infrastructure.
