I am enjoying your videos about Germany. I lived there for a year in 1986-87. I remember they were very particular about car emissions even then. You mentioned the US being slow at going Green. It is, depending on where you are. I lived in Washington State after coming home from Germany. We had to recycle paper, glass, and cans. Glass and cans had to be washed before going into the recycle bin. You had to put out at least one cart of recycling per month or pay an extra fee in trash collection. In some states, Maine, NY, and a few others, you paid an extra nickel for a bottle or can of pop, so you had to recycle it to get your money back.

Just for the information of anybody travelling to Germany. If you haven't got the emissions sticker (Umweltplakette) you can call into a TÜV station in a town that isn't subject to emissions restrictions, show them your vehicle log book and they'll make a sticker for you on the spot. We did it a couple of weeks ago, it cost us €6 and took 5 minutes.

Thanks so much for your advice.
We did see this as an option but Unfortunately this couldn’t work for us as we arrived later on a Friday and were only there for the weekend.

When we were in Berlin, Germany last year, we noticed that when you bought plastic bottles or cans there was a charge which you would get back when you return the empty. A bit like the UK in the 70s 80s. We seen homeless collecting them out of peoples rubbish to get the money back.

We are planning on taking the ferry from Harwich to Rotterdam in the fall and exploring that way. No car though. Just trains and bus. I was so hoping Germany had gone to credit car. I love tap and pay but we are use to Bavaria and the cash only. The grocery stores take card but the restaurants want cash. We are renting a car once we get to Liege in Belgium so hoping the car comes with that sticker. FYI, we live on the east coast of Fl and it is so hot and have had no rain for weeks till yesterday. The bathrooms made me think of one roadside stop on the autobahn. A silver toilet, no seat.

In The Netherlands all waste is seperated: we have bins for plastic/cartons, garden and cooking waste, paper and the rest. All our bottles and drink cans are recycled via our supermarkets. In The Netherlands it’s mainly card payments. I hardly ever carry cash on me since most shops (even small shops) have a portable card devide. For getting cash: our bank subscription (there are several choices) determines where we can use cash withdrawal machines. I have a Europe subscription and can extend this should we go to the US. For the UK we pay each time (a percentage) we use our debit or credcards or use a cash withdrawal machine since the UK is no longer within the EU. We also always buy the headlight stickers when we go to the UK but we’ve noticed that not many people visiting the UK or Europe do that but they are obliged. And you’re right: UK services are totally different from our gas stations. We have a little shop with (in my opinion) clean toilets (not many though; mostly 2 toilets), sometimes a little supermarket and (in the south of The Netherlands) very rare a Starbucks. We pay a lot of road taxes whereas Belgium hardly pays anything at all but therefore our roads are quite good ☺️ Should you ever visit The (south of) The Netherlands: we will gladly show you around. The south is called ‘The Tuscany of The Netherlands’ due to the hills and the food ☺️

Hi Bianca, lovely hearing from you and thank you for my helpful comments 😊
      It was interesting reading.
The Tuscany of the Netherlands sounds amazing. With the headlights I know that you are supposed to to stop blinding.
Interesting about road taxes. There was an instant difference crossing that border 😊

Oh Lisa I wished I known you wasn’t taking cash! I’d have warned you. I know Germany is cash heavy still ( and quite rightly). We experienced the same when we’d run out of euros and tried to use our card. They didn’t like it!! Greece is also very similar xx

I still think it has to do with taxes. We had to use the loo in St James Park. it was 20p to pee. Tap and go.
