  • Bonnie, an 18-year-old Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth, gave birth to an infant on November 4, 2018. The newborn, who is the second offspring of Bonnie and 25-year-old male Cocoa, is doing well and is bonding with its mother in the sloths’ behind-the-scenes indoor area.

One thing that all sloth species share in the way of parenting is Mom communicates to baby "Watch what I do and learn" and that's it . There may differ in style some Moms are very attentive and then others are more business as usual. I was watching a 3 toed sloth Mom and baby Mom leaned back arms behind her head then baby proceeded to give it a try and almost fall lol but they learn everything from Mom and hence the dilemma in raising orphaned baby sloths we cant teach those things. Take care !

Basically the reality of it is Mom eats and baby scavenges food from her, baby 2 toed sloths even from birth must fight for every morsel even if a baby gets its own food from somewhere if mom finds it appealing she will take it from the baby. No free rides as a two toed sloth they learn they must be aggressive to eat or they will die. Yes Mom will defend her baby and love it but other than breast feeding the baby is on its own.
