I really don't understand why they don't just name the 26 straight away instead of wasting the players time and risk them getting injured.
We all know what players like Maddison are about and we all know which players will not play so why bother.
The idea makes sense, it's to try to encourage competition in the camp.
The problem is that Southgate is notorious for having his favourites and turning a blind eye when their form nosedives.

@jamesgunn7 well then @georgef822 point makes sense. If you're just gonna pick the same players over and over again why bother with tagging the other lads along. I for one want to see the peripheral players be given a start if they do well in the camp.
The reason: Imagine you have had a good season, were in with a shout of the squad and missed out at the last minute, then someone gets injured and you get called back into the squad knowing that you were not originally in it. Where would your head be?

Don’t see the big deal with Maddison he ain’t better than what’s already there
England’s preliminary squad will be cut down from 33 players to 26 meaning that Gareth Southgate has to leave out some players. When he started the season off on fire hitting the ground running after his move to Tottenham, at the time when he was firing on all cylinders if anyone told you that James Maddison would end up being left out of the England squad for the EUROs, people would’ve laughed at you.
Maddison could end up getting dropped because since coming back from injury, he has not been the same player and as Tottenham’s form started to dip, he wasn’t the same player he was at the start of the season. He found himself benched at times and when he was starting games he was ineffective. He has found himself out of form at the worst possible time because he went from being seen as the signing of the season and an automatic pick for the EUROs to being left out of the squad entirely. Given the amount of options that England have in attack and midfield, I don’t think that Southgate would’ve even played him. Had he not had that injury for 2 months, maybe his chances of making the England squad would’ve been higher for him and if it’s true that he’ll be left out, I don’t think you can argue against that.
Not just that, but he has started diving a lot more than usual. Him and Kulusevsky. In fact, I think it was the Man City game (not 100%) when he and Kulusevsky both repeatedly dived, then maddison was fouled in the box, but the ref was never going to give it after all the diving. Not a good look

This is just Southgate, Deschamps has named his squad and not bothered with a training camp squad. Maddison is allowed to be disappointed and start his holidays early, whats the point of him being there on Friday.
Curtis Jones has a chance to win his first cap on Friday so its a different situation for him.

Maddison's omission was 'leaked' a day before anyone else. How does that happen? So the manager goes to his private quarters writes down the squad, the omissions then informs the players, all in private like a professional operation would normally do. Why were the names of the players dropped coming out randomly every few hours? Who's in charge of this set up?
He should be nowhere near this squad. Correct decision
Been out injured for the best part of the season and came back playing very average. I don't think he can really complain. Reece James when fit is one of the best right backs in the world and didn't even make the 33 preliminary squad. His long term injury and lack of playing time was a factor, but did end the season looking fit and ready despite a silly red card. Grealish probably had more a shout to be in the 26 than Maddison despite a underperforming season. Some questions on Southgate's final defence, lack of International experience and left in a position where Stones will be more needed than ever to remain fit and playable. Big gamble taking 3 strikers and leaving few numbers in defence.
Maddison isn’t complaining about it. He’s accepted it. He’s said he’s gutted and will now go away and rest and recover it’s a non story !

I wouldn't be happy but I wouldn't want to burn my bridges. Being in exile from international football is a difficult thing to come back from as we have seen over the years.

I think it’s about time Southgate was called out by the sports media, it’s almost like the guy is untouchable. I have seen you lot trash every England manger for the last 30 years. Scott minto has zero idea about what it’s like to be operating at elite level national football. Maddison was gutted that’s ok but he’s not allowed to go to the euros so what’s the point in hanging around for the 1-0 loss to Iceland. He’s gone off to get a rest and recover from a tough season.
