- In this episode I share with you a cup of coffee and a couple of rare coffee books by way of thanks for all the cups of coffee you have kindly bought me.
If you're wondering what all the coffee stuff is about you can find out on this page where you can also if you wish, help support this channel by buying me a cup of coffee

it is like a dream to "be" in your study as I also drink my coffee! Joining you like this is a sweet refuge from the troubling news of the day in the USA. My coffee love has Norwegian roots, which I imagine traveled north from your coffee houses!
Yes I can imagine the Lloyds coffee house sending out some coffee with the shipping to Norway!
I am partly Norwegian!! I have very clear memories of my Norwegian grandma brewing a wonderfully dark brew of coffee of which my father would gratefully smile upon reception!!
He would always say that his mother brewed such dark thick coffee that one could put a spoon in it and the spoon would remain standing up by itself!
To this day my palate loves freshly ground beans that have been roasted to a dark color and I never add anything to it. Unadulterated coffee that stands tall on its own merits, not needing anything else to cover up its true taste is my favorite beverage of all!!
A poem of thanks to Dr. Guite and all of you here:
A heart-felt thanks to Malcolm Guite,
Whose poems bring me such delight!
A weary woe within my mind
His words have fought. His spells are kind.
Inside his library you'll find
A coffee and a pipe to light -
And books to keep you up all night!
This lockdown will not last for long,
And when it's done we'll sing a song
And raise a pint to better days
When mornings have no fog or haze
But clear and golden light that stays
And never fades. A festive throng
We'll be! Take heart, my friends. Be strong.
A sonnet in rhyming couplets! Well Done! I'm honoured
I enjoyed this trip to your study and it would indeed be a treat to savour a coffee and chat in person! Best to you and yours!
yes, it would be good
I love a good coffee and pipe. Have a wonderful day my friend.
Thanks, you too!
My Grandpa smoked a pipe and I simply love the smell, and I would sit there watching him prepare it. Fond memories. A bit Proustian for me really, the smell of a pipe.
I’ve enjoyed viewing (and re-viewing) your thoughtful library videos. Looking forward to meeting for a coffee and pipe someday. We might have to wait till glory, but that will be even finer. Blessings.
As always, love your videos!!!
Thank *you*, Malcolm. I have enjoyed the coffee with you in this video, drinking mine from a beautiful hand made pottery coffee mug that I got from the Red Light Roastery coffee shop at Hot Springs, Arkansas last year. Treasure the time spent with you having coffee at Nero a few years ago and hope to enjoy a cup with you in person in the coming year. With much gratitude!
Glad you enjoyed it, and once to hear from you again. Yes I remember our meeting at Nero's with great pleasure!
Good evening Malcolm,
Yes, lockdown is once again upon us at a time of year when the nights are closing in. However, it's that time of the year to sit by an open fire, smoke a pipe and read. The images from Hardy's 'The Darking Thrush' always spring to mind, though it is not winter yet.
God bless.
the darkling thrush is one of my favourite poems!
As a Christian I love listen to all you're videos god bless you
thanks!
I would love to spend hours browsing your library; it looks like a haven and your personal heaven. Thanks for sharing so intimately with us! Cheers from Huntington Beach, California!
This brings such delight. Thanks Malcolm for all of your beautiful work which has brought such meaning to my life. I have a deep love of coffee as well. May you drink great coffee and read lots during lockdown. Take good care to you, yours and of course your dogs!
Thanks for those kind wishes Sarah, and I'm glad you're enjoying these. I must say having the dogs and taking them for walks is (together with strong coffee) one of the things that makes lockdown bearable
My point in the comment below is that yes, books have conversations. Immediately before turning on this video I was reading from Churchill's "A History of the English Speaking People: Volume II". I closed it for the evening shortly before the Restoration. Churchill mentions various factions meeting in coffeehouses. Where would we be without caffeine?
I have just happened upon your channel! I am loving your videos! It feels very cozy! Love from Newfoundland Canada!
Glad you like them!
I agree with everything you say. I am a much nicer person after I have had my morning coffee. Like a pint of beer, a cup of coffee should be allowed to rest for a moment whilst we gaze at it in expectation before taking that first sip. Before I retired, I would stop at a coffee shop between Southwark Cathedral and the Thames every Friday morning for a cup of coffee, take out my notebook and write for 40 minutes before setting off for work. What joy! It is one of the few things I miss in retirement.
that sounds like a wonderful routine, maybe you can replicate it in retirement in some way. I certainly find that coffee and pipe-tobacco stimulate writing!
In these days of imposed isolation, the convivial Kaffeeklatsch of your cozy little study is most enjoyable. Recently subscribed to your wonderful channel, Reverend. As a fellow pipe smoker and literary enthusiast, I thoroughly enjoy your content. Warmest Greetings from Greece! 🇬🇧🇬🇷
Welcome aboard!
Malcolm Guite - Thank you.
Malcolm,
I must thank you for putting this video out. I haven't had coffee since graduate school(what passed for coffee in my department had the approximate taste and consistency of battery acid, and my stomach never recovered), but I'm glad you're getting the support all the same. The U.S. is an absolute mess right now and this video really relaxed me and, I suspect, will help me get some sleep tonight.
Thank you again,
John
Thanks John, I hope that there is something instead of coffee that sots or comforts you, but I'm glad my video has helped!
Thank you so much for this video. It is so timely as we sat in a cafe in Canberra recently called 'Penny University Cafe" and the menu talks about how the first coffee houses in Oxford were called Penny Universities as a coffee was a penny and in these places a different form of academic learning took place. They had old books you could borrow and I took "Little Dorrit' in an Everyman edition. So, I then had to go away and learn what Everyman was about and I thought it so apt that these books were published originally to help the average man learn and read widely. Don't you love when little strings of encounters occur like this? Coffee House Mob is an excellent name for a coffee shop! Wonderful to sit and sip along with you.
yes, I love it when these threads of connection all draw together. We need all the 'penny universities' we can get!
Now I really have to go buy you a coffee :) Thank you for your enthusiasm over poetry and coffee and pipe smoking and life.
thanks!
Ironically enough it was a global pandemic and national lockdown here in the states that turned me into a "proper" coffee drinker. I used to take my Maxwell House grounds with creamer and sugar, but now I buy whole bean and enjoy all of my coffee black as night. Cheers!
This reminds me of the scene in James Michener’s book”Centennial” where McKeag has the lonely ceremony in his ice cave by brewing a cup of Lapsang Souchong tea every evening. The highlight of his lonely day.
Watching your video with my morning coffee has definitely reduced my very human woes for the day 👍🙂
great, that's just what it was intended to do!
Wow. This is so inspiring. I just created my first post for buy me a coffee and searched for inspiration and then, I found your channel. Thanks a lot.
Good luck with your page. The ' buy me a coffee' is a lovely light-touch way for writers to gather some support and encouragement!
@@MalcolmGuitespell thank you so much, yes it is
I love the smell and taste of coffee. The effects I try to minimise, particularly if drinking the beverage on a light stomach. But yes, it's a nice thing to savour a coffee with affable company. It's also an amusing juxtaposition, the notion of slowing down enjoying a coffee, while the coffee seeks to have the opposite effect almost!
thanks yes, perhaps its the contrast between the stimulus and the relaxation that makes it work!
I’ve noticed on many an occasion that you have what looks like 45 pipes list in your study. Would your please consider doing a video on pipes, shapes, feels, smoke and how to keep them lit. I’ve noticed some pipes you smoke need extra care to stay lit. What is the science behind them, how does shape of the neck or size of the bowl affect you? Peterson vs Dunhill vs corn cob... what is it?
thanks, that's a good suggestion, and in fact if you scroll through my earlier videos you'll find Ive done one or two about my pipes but I shall certainly do more. I'm often relighting in these videos because its a fresh pipeful, I find it takes more than the 10 minutes of the video for the pipe to really get going!
I second that! I would love to see your collection of pipes and hear the stories behind them.
While I am not much of a coffee drinker (I love tea), I did enjoy today's video. Thank you, Dr. Guite. What type of coffee are you drinking today?
arabica
For me nothing goes quite so well with coffee as a nice Burley flake tobacco. The two produce a kind of synergy and share some of the same earthy, nutty, chocolate flavor profiles. Solani Aged Burley Flake, Wessex Burley Slice, and the Cornell and Diehl Burley flake series are all wonderful if you haven't tried them. Interestingly enough I feel the same about Virginias and tea. Once again they share similar profiles such as bright, citrus notes. Perhaps that is just my palate though
Ive had the Solani and it's wonderful!
I want to chill with this dude
Alas for those of us who only drink tea! :)
Love this - what a nice break from the news over the pond.... I shared your CZcams clips with my friend who's son was at Girton. Small world! Would love to know coffee shops you recommend for when I'm in Cambridge or London... after Lockdown of course :)
Thanks Hedy, There's a wonderful little independent coffee shop in St. Edward's passage conveniently sandwiched between two second hand bookshops, and there is also Fitzbilly's, famous for its Chelsea buns!
@@MalcolmGuitespell Ooooh I like the sound of that as I love second hand bookshops - we're lucky to have David's here in Letchworth too! Thank you! :)
As a "Tweedaholic" could you please share your coats origins in this episode?
Ah, I have number of old Harris tweed jackets and a Donegal tweed coat, its a nice idea to feature them in an episode, I'll try to do that sometime soon
Malcolm, I was your 667th view... Had to fix that 666. 😉
Coffee and tobacco as a combination has never crossed my mind but recently my brother and I have been considering getting pipes to see how we might like them. Do you have any favorite tobacco? Coffee is at least all accounted for!
Thanks Caleb, for a milder everyday smoke I have Kendal black cherry, but for something a little more substantial I have Peterson's Balkan Delight and Deluxe Navy Rolls
1650 you say? Did coffee inspire The Great Rebellion? Did it inspire The Restoration? Either or neither, the coffee house has earned its place in English history, if an American may say so.
Very much appreciated, Mr. Guite! Cheers to another eremitical month!
Watching this makes me consider smoking a pipe...how would I look as a woman, what are the health risks? In any case, you make it look so appealing!!
I think its totally ok for a woman to smoke a pipe. You don't inhale so its not like cigarettes. My great grandmother used to light my great grandfather's pipe for him to get it going when he came in and liked it so much she took it up herself and they sat companionably by the fire each with their clay pipe
I can only imagine how poor we would be without our first coffee of the day. In both economy and quality of life 😋 - Shaun
indeed!
Classical Latin. Or Church Latin.
Classical Latin!
Glad you didn’t read in Latin 😊
I’ve enjoyed viewing (and re-viewing) your thoughtful library videos. Looking forward to meeting for a coffee and pipe someday. We might have to wait till glory, but that will be even finer. Blessings.
Thanks, yes the longer lockdown lasts the more I crave a coffee and a pipe in real company!
