Today we will tour the Recoleta Cemetery from end to end, resting place for the remains of great figures in Argentine history. We will do it in two parts. This is the long one, and the short one is the Evita part, because there is another video for that part.
In the year 1821 a decree of the governor established that for reasons of hygiene all the corpses were taken to the burial ground of the Church of Balvanera. However, it was not possible to comply with the measure due to lack of funds to renovate it.
The situation was simplified months later, when in the framework of the ecclesiastical reform of President Rivadavia. The Government resolved the confiscation of the garden and the burial ground owned by the parents of La Recoleta. This is how the Northern Cemetery (today De la Recoleta) was born, the first public one the city had and inaugurated on November 17, 1822.
