    Great to see. A few years ago when I was living in England I had a shoot over 4000 acres in Cambridgeshire. There was a syndicate that shot every second Wednesday with days averaging 250 to 350 birds. I started a 410 day for the end of season cock birds, my syndicate were nervous of embarrassment. After the first year it became the most in demand day of the season. My pickers up commented that they had brought extra dogs which were not needed. Birds were either clean missed or killed. A wonderful and surprising day. Keep it up Dave.

    Took the 410 out for a walked up day earlier in the season and it's a very capable cartridge. One cunning bird initially put the dog handler and another person between us until it was about 40 yards out. I was using 3" #4 11/16 oz cartridges and dropped the bird with the second shot at approximately 45 yards. Likely at the limit of the cartridge.
    You bird section looked spot on in the video. As always the video was excellent and it was great to see you work your magic. Thank you again for your efforts in promoting opportunities for the youth, even the 6'1" six year olds 😉.

    @baronofb.5323 Před 3 lety

    I've recently upped my interest in .410, and am enjoying some pigeon shooting around the farms we hunt (my young son is an avid and capable participant!). When patterning vs. game shooting, do you think the pattern plate can be misleading when it is considered how long the shot string is on an 18-19gram load (what we'd call an 11/16oz. 3" load here in Canada) vs. the 14 gram (1/2 oz. 2 1/2") loads? Meaning, the heavier load will logically put a better pattern on a static patterning board, but the shot string is so long a good portion of that pattern will not impact a moving target. With the difficulty in finding .410 ammunition as of late, I've had to grudgingly buy some 2 1/2" 6's rather than 3" and am not seeing any appreciable difference in on game performance. Our quarry is barn pigeons at typical ranges of 15-30 yards.

    • @DaveCarrieShooting
      @DaveCarrieShooting Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Baron
      Great little calibre the 410!! my experience and knowledge with the 410 is not too great as I only did limited testing on a small amount of cartridges available to me at that time!! However I was lucky with the choice given to me - as it turned out the 18grm fibre wad 6 made by Gamebore proved to be upto the job at hand!! For me confidence builds off the pattern plate but ultimately the proof of the pudding is the performance in the field on live quarry!! American home loaders for me are the true experts on small calibre loads like the 410 and the 28gauge the Brits are catching up with the 410 loads as far as home loading is concerned “but” are still way behind the Americans.
      To answer your question as best I can- yes there’s always going to be variations on the pattern plate and sometimes what you see does not always add up when performing in the field, but the old adage always wins through “confidence” and sticking to the one that works for you👌

    • @baronofb.5323
      @baronofb.5323 Před 3 lety

      @@DaveCarrieShooting - Thanks Dave! Yes, the .410 is a little gem when used correctly. Ours is a fixed full choke. On the pattern board at 25 yards, the extra shot in the 3" load did show advantage over the 2 1/2". But once we got at shooting pigeons with the tiny cartridges I have now gained confidence in them. The pattern diameter of our .410 is of course smaller than the bigger bores so harder to connect with, but the pattern density is effective. As you said, while the numbers and the pattern plate are valuable, confidence is key and after killing several pigeons with authority I've been impressed by the little .410.
      Thank you for your excellent videos - they make me dream of being there one day. Perhaps if we win the lotto, you may see my son and I at a shoot and we can shake hands. :-)
