Pond Rake

  • Latest project was an “Extendo-Rake”, built to clean up the debris & vegetation along the banks of a pond. 20 feet long, fabricated with 2x4 x 3/16" steel tubing. Hinged at bottom to prevent excessive downward pressure from the skidsteer arms. Weight of steel is sufficient to rake up debris without digging into the pond banks. I needed raking action rather than digging. Lifting steel chains are crossed to prevent sideways swinging. Quick adapter is a 3 point adapter plate using the lower pins as hinge point. Skidsteer stays up on safe, hard ground.
    Works better than I anticipated. Where the vegetation was heavy, a few weeks in the sun to dry out before burning. Grass seed over other areas of ballast, muck & mud germinated quickly. Water was cloudy for a few days but cleared quickly. Pond was being overtaken by cattails, the rake pulls them out by their roots. Stone ballast originally around the banks was pulled back up.
    Video is displayed 2X times actual rate. Three pulls in the same spot brought up most vegetation and muck. Also works good from a tractor, but skidsteer is easier without braking & shifting a tractor transmission.

    I'm an engineer, FANTASTIC job. Simple and EFFECTIVE. (Good thinking on the hinge as well, your leverage on that would be tremendous at that length..) Now, come see me in Ohio and do my pond..... LOL

      Wire rope replaced with chain. Wire was too elastic causing the rake frame to bounce a lot..

    How do you go about collecting up all the muck on the bank afterward?

    • @JeffMcCaskey
      @JeffMcCaskey  Před 7 měsíci +1

      1st year was a grapple, later was a rototiller after it dried to build up the banks.

    I've been considering building something like this myself. Glad to see this video. Probably better than the idea I was working from.
    I was thinking of a design based on the Lake Rake that I would be able to push in and drag out of the water from the rear of my tractor. but attaching it to my front end loader like you have it attached to the front of your skid steer would be much simpler. It solves my problem of how to get the debris off of the tines.
    What do you think the maximum reach would be?

  • @JeffMcCaskey
    @JeffMcCaskey  Před 9 lety +6

    The maximum reach is 20 feet. I could have made it longer, but it was anyone's guess if skidsteer would be able to pick it up. The rake end gets real heavy when loaded up with muck in the tines. Dropping it into water breaks it loose.

    What did you use for tines? And after you raked, you just let it sit and were able to burn it in a few weeks?

    • @JeffMcCaskey
      @JeffMcCaskey  Před 4 lety

      That's a landscape rake that had a broken frame. The debris took a month to be dry enough to burn. I used a rototiller the 2nd time to create a rich planting area for grass around the pond.

  • @jimhuckaby4941
    @jimhuckaby4941 Před 8 lety

    Greatly appreciate the video. I'm thinking of making one too. Looks like you converted a 3-pt hitch landscape rake, which have the tines spaced about 1 inch apart. I'm thinking about just buying the tines (as little as ~$4 each) and bolting them to an angle iron. Would you space them differently if you were making it that way? Any other modifications you'd make if you were re-making it? Looks pretty well thought out.

    • @jeffmccaskey1844
      @jeffmccaskey1844 Před 8 lety +1

      Yes, it's a salvaged landscape rake with the 3 point frame cutoff.
      Works great as built, however don't expect to use it again for another few years. The hinge is necessary to keep excessive weight from downward pressure of the tines so they don't break. Only the weight of the steel is necessary to pull out vegetation without turning into an excavator.

    • @jimhuckaby4941
      @jimhuckaby4941 Před 8 lety

      I was thinking about putting the hinge at the top so I didn't need the cables, and looking around for a 3-pole antennae stand to serve as the boom.

  • @loftintrailercompanyllc3437

    After using it do you think you could have gotten away with making it longer? If so, how much more length do you think you could add and still lift it? I have been thinking of building one for a while but couldn't figure out how to make it ridged enough with out making it to heavy. The cables are a good idea. Wish I had thought of that.

    • @JeffMcCaskey
      @JeffMcCaskey  Před 8 lety +1

      I broke the original cables and replaced with heavier cables. I could have made it longer but I have some areas where I would not be able to backup. The crossed cables keeps it from swinging left/right.

    • @loftintrailercompanyllc3437
      @loftintrailercompanyllc3437 Před 8 lety +1

      Raising the cable attachment point on the skid steer end would greatly reduce the stress on the cable. The closer you get your cable angle to 90 degrees the stronger your rigging will be. Do you think a large skid steer would handle a rake like yours 30' long?

    • @thesolarexpert4735
      @thesolarexpert4735 Před 3 lety

      i would use it on my telehander JCB 525 so it would reach another 19 feet or on my JCB teleskid and reach another 8 feet but that machine has tracks and would tear up the yard so the 525 is wheeled and would be better to use, i'll see about fabricating such a contraption. lol

      Yes, a colored dye does work, but only until the vegetation breaks thru the surface. Then it gets full sun. I have (9) grass carp that also help a little.

      Have to dig your edges straight down. Or steeper. Tapered edges slide in (muck in) and also allow undergrowth. Install underwater air. This helps too. I’m not an expert just things I’ve learned.

      10-12 feet in the middle. However vegetation only grows in 3 feet depth or less around the banks.
