  • Usually I teach an animal's family how to do the Trust Technique in our first session. With Jack Russell Rusty we need to do things differently. Rusty gets so alarmed when visitors arrive at the house that I needed to help him with that first before we could do anything else.
The Trust Technique understands that behaviour is caused by thinking. Overthinking causes a variety of inner states such as anxiety, worry, fear or over-excitement. These feelings then cue the behaviour.
In Rusty's case it is incessant, high-pitched barking and extreme jumpiness when people arrive.
From a training perspective it is thought the more an animal does a behaviour (aka rehearsing), the more they will do it again. So, training aims at interrupting unwanted behaviours. Redirection, punishment or avoidance are common strategies in the process.
The Trust Technique is not a training method and takes a different perspective. Its process of helping an animal overcome 'unwanted behaviours' includes allowing the animal to express these behaviours (safely). The context is different and therefore there is no 'rehearsing' effect. Instead, the animal undergoes a process of letting go which reduces their overthinking until they feel more peaceful. The once prompted behaviour disappears because their thinking (inner state) has changed and thus prompts calm behaviour.
If you have a strong opinion in a situation - because you have rehearsed it many times - the process of letting go may take time too In our first session, Rusty went from barking at me for 15 minutes to anxious shaking to occasional sitting down until we ended it at a point where his body responded to the Trust Technique strongly but his mind still needed to hold on a bit. What did that look like? Rusty sat next to a cushion, his head heavy, sleepy eyes, his nose touching the cushion but his front legs still propping him up.
In our second session there was no barking and his body released with several yawns and stretches and after half an hour he was able to rest on the cushion and relax.
When I left - another anxiety trigger for Rusty - he started barking again. His human sent me a messages shortly after that Rusty returned to the cushion - the place that made him feel so peaceful - soon after. And for the rest of the day he kept returning to it, resting.
The video is a part of our third session, when Rusty's human learned how to do the Trust Technique with him.
When practicing the Trust Technique with an animal, we enter the present moment which is experienced as a feeling of peacefulness. However, if there is unpeace (agitation, worry, over-excitement, etc.) feeling peaceful is not possible. In that case we first facilitate the animal's process of releasing their inner turmoil which then allows them to join us in the stillness of the present moment. This is done in close proximity but usually without touch. It's different than cuddling. It creates a deep connection and intimacy that brings increased trust.
In the video watch how Rusty, in his own time, lets go of his need to be in his human's lap to feel safe and embarks on an inner transformation journey of learning that feeling calm, safe and at peace is also possible in another way.
The family includes another dog, Polly. She is a confident and calm Skye Terrier but - like everyone else - Rusty's anxious behaviours affect her. We all share feelings. To what degree we react to someone else's upset depends on several factors (such as our awareness level). Though our focus is on Rusty, Polly undergoes her own process alongside her fur brother's in the session.
The sound recording in the original video was a bit poor, so wherever there is an exchange of words, I have provided subtitles. Just a warning: At 4:50 minutes into the video, Rusty gets triggered and barks - it gets very loud for a few seconds. I just got up to retrieve my phone (so I could take a few photos) which set off Rusty's alarm.

@@joelkalyan6732 The people who designed the technique, sell it. Go online and you will find it. Or, go to you tube and watch as many videos that are showing YOU HOW they do it, and you should be able to figure it out. What I see, and what i learned is that our animals FEEL what we are feeling and they react or behave according to that. We can also feel what they feel. We share feelings and react to each other based on that. So, if youre anxious or angry, sad, frustrated etc..they will feel it. And "IF" and When they misbehave ..it can often be because theyre feeling something (from you??) and if we dont like their behaviour and then we react negatively to them..it breaks trust, they dont know what to do with their feelings. SO...we have to get very very calm and peaceful, and just sit with them..be beside them , silently...they will feel our peace and then begin to relax, they will learn to process their feelings and trust can be restored. Hope that helps, thats what i learned by watching a whole bunch of these videos..you can too, or, just buy the series online..its probably a whole lot of other info too....and its called The Trust Technique. This is very good to know.

@@mssavedin92 It might look like we are just sitting quietly next to the animal but that is only half of what we are doing. Just sitting quietly with your animal has some benefits. However, it usually is not enough to help rehabilitate problems such as anxiety, aggression, over-excitement, etc. Mindful regard is what is needed there. Peace can not be found if unpeace is not released. The Trust Technique can be learned via self-paced online video course: trust-technique.com/product/trust-technique-lifetime/tt/66/?campaign=VideoCourse
or by booking a consultation with a practitioner such as myself.

@@unhurried2023 I totally get that. I assumed as much.
I imagined that I myself must become centered and mindfull first, to get to where I need to be in order to be peaceful for them, thats what i thought the first step would be..Im sure theres far more to the technique but Ive noticed that doing that alone has already made a difference with my 2 cats. All in all, its pretty awesome. Thankyou

@@mssavedin92 yes, it all starts with ourselves. The Trust Technique is actually simple and uncomplicated. People tremendously enjoy spending time like this with their animals. How beautiful that you have found a deeper connection with your cats. ❤

      Hi Joel,
The Trust Technique is a method of reducing an animal's thinking levels to promote trust, connection, confidence and communication. Another way of saying "thinking levels" is "states of mind". Applying The Trust Technique facilitates a process of letting go so that anxiety, fear, over-excitement, frustration and any other form of overthinking can reduce and dissipate. It's like taking off the overthinking glasses (how the animal perceives the world) and replacing them with calm and peaceful glasses. Behaviour cued by overthinking is different from behaviour cued by calmness.
You can learn how to use it with your own animals with this extensive on-line video course: trust-technique.com/product/trust-technique-lifetime/tt/66/?campaign=VideoCourse
As a jump start, you can book a consultation with a practitioner such as myself where you learn the basic method and also receive guidance on how to use it to solve specific problems. A consultation can be done in person or via video call. Please get in touch if you'd like any further information or book a session with me - mia@thedependablecompanion.com.au
