Carlos side was willing to teach more people, Helio was more into the richer clients. Even though both sides preferred rich clientele. They both did not care about the poor though.
Amazing! The variation I learned was to thread the forearm to the neck and peel, but Renzo shows to trap his arm and choke with the shoulder! So many options, so cool.
Pretty awesome, I like the fact that the same basic escape direction on the ground is applied here to standing vs other escapes which work great too but you have to ask yourself if you will remember them when under pressure.
Von Flue is an awesome choke. Renzo's the man! One way you could counter the arm on the opposite shoulder when your opponent defends the standing guillotine; is to either do the arm in guillotine or the high elbow guillotine aka marcelotine.
i have done this so many times in rolling...even pulled it once in a competition! i actually learned it watching tate fighting in strikeforce..she did a variation where she put up her knee and stuf..but i picked it up at once and knew that was a pretty darn good move for people who like to go for the double leg...i always got cought by that guillotine even if i passed..then i started trying it out and it works beautifully i love this choke! and if it fails you have the option of an armtriangle
0:25 "And then suddenly it get a little loose and he was able to pull it out, entendeu? After he had to put ice..." Renzo accidentally saying portuguese words in the middle of an English speech lol. That happens to me too
This escape, except for the choke at the end is on the Gracie Combatives DVD's. I guess they didn't want to teach that choke because like Renzo said a lot of people don't realize it's a choke until it's too late.
Rener and Ryron's guillotine escape is Lesson 32 on the Combatives DVD's and the online course. I compared theirs to Renzo's. On theirs, they still monkey grip the bad guy's choking wrist with one hand and choke him using the opposite forearm; then they go into that crossover clutch and shoulder choke combo that Renzo showed in this video. Either way gets the job done. Renzo's counter-choke with the shoulder makes his version of the defense more efficient.
Fast Donny 316 Exactly correct. That's why I was trying to formulate a reason why the Gracies didn't teach Renzo's choke in the Combatives series. The only thing I could come up with was that the Combatives course is for ppl with no training and because of that this choke might not be good for a complete novice to have in their arsenal.
dingoleh The Von Flue choke is pretty cool. And Rener and Eve actually showed it on the Gabriel Gonzaga Breakdown along with an escape from closed guard. And yes, the shoulder choke and the closed guard guillotine defense are advanced escapes as well.
How could Lyoto Machida use this choke against Jon Jones. Jones was against the cage. Lyoto could not use this technique to defend against the guillotine Jones used to submit him. I am just asking a question. It may be a dumb question but it is just my question.
Renzo's guillotine escape took fewer steps than the one Rener and Ryron showed on the Gracie Academy channel. But look it up and judge for yourself. At any rate, between the varied guillotine escapes, this is simply proof that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is always evolving. Ryron and Rener even said themselves when they were training Ronda Rousey at the Torrance, CA academy that her exposure of the flaws in some of their GJJ move sets allows them to help fine-tune their technique against future opponents.
yes man im trying to go for that, its just that sometimes i end up on the bottom of a sprawl so i lift my head and ram to the side at which point my opponent usually takes my neck. hahaha but thanx for the comment it is very helpful
He couldn't, just like you said. He was pressed against the cage, Jon's weight, strength, and Lyoto's weight were all working against Lyoto, this wasn't even an option. Not a dumb question at all btw, the only dumb questions are the ones never asked :)
This is a great defense. But the elbow is on the side on the Guillotine choke. If the Elbow was in better position and locked with the other hand, also the let leg should have stepped back to prevent the takedown and the reversal may not have worked. Jon Jones is such a high level fighter and so tall I'm not sure Machida could have gotten this. Since Machida is a BJJ Black Belt I would assume he know this escape (Maybe Not?) but Jones is so big, so strong and so technically sound I'm not sure if , don't think he could have got this on Jones. On a lesser opponent yes but Jones had it locked up to tight and good.
Put yourself on the ground with your opponent. Why? When you could end the fight while your standing. I don't get it. The groin is there for the taking. Turn your head to the side and attack the groin. It would have been my first option.
watch miesha tate vs zoila frausto in strickeforce..you see it in action..you wont finish everybody with it but it sure as hell is usefull! and will make the other guy think twice before going for the guillotine again
This is a great defense. But the elbow is on the side on the Guillontine choke. If the Elbow was in better position and locked with the other hand, also the let leg should have stepped back to prevent the takedown and the reversal may not have worked. Jon Jones is such a high level fighter and so tall I'm not sure Machida could have gotten this. On a lesser opponent yes but Jones had it locked up to tight and good.
of course machida knew this move his jiujitsu is legit I have a dvd instructional of his but the problem is that it's hard to think of reversals when you are dizzy from elbows and tired and panicking. This situation is a reverse of the choke that dos santos caught cain Velásquez in but he got dunked on his head
hes looked the same for years now,a little bit fat when hes not in fight shape. He says hell fight again in the ufc,he actually has fights on contract but i hope he quits because he wont beat anyone decent now and not because of age, because the game has passed by pure grapplers who cant wrestle or strike. That man has a pair of brass balls though,he'll do it because he loves the arena, the adrenaline even when he loses and lose he will.
I never said about multiple opponents but you are blind if you think Gracie is perfect, the style is full of lies like most of the styles, besides I don´t see Jiu JItsu guys ruling everyone...
What if they put you in an actual Guillotine built in the 1700s, does the same escape still work?
It happened to me once, i remember now cause i was there. Yeah pretty much the same defense works. Remember to use your shoulder.
nah u gotta use the roll escape for dat one
It does, if you're Renzo Gracie
lmao
ABSOLUTELY.
Just dont let the that blade get the choke.
Renzo Gracie shows he's a great teacher here. I respect him so much.
+Alex Toh dude renzo gracie's a scum bag
+bruh ski Is eh aye?
Why is that?
Everyone must admit, Whether you prefer the Carlos or Helio side of the family, The Gracie's are great teachers. Every last one of them.
'must'?!
Carlos side was willing to teach more people, Helio was more into the richer clients. Even though both sides preferred rich clientele. They both did not care about the poor though.

He's a great teacher.
Love some Renzo!
This choke is awesome! We were taught this at my academy.
Actually one of the best videos about the move. Only wish Renzo's English and the audio quality were better.
Von Flue is an awesome choke. Renzo's the man! One way you could counter the arm on the opposite shoulder when your opponent defends the standing guillotine; is to either do the arm in guillotine or the high elbow guillotine aka marcelotine.
This will be VERY useful to me. Thanks so much.
What a great coach. Renzo Gracie
renzo looks huge now
also i could listen to him read a phone book
so engaging
Renzo's a great guy
better then a escape it's a counter submission that can be use to do many submission armbar transition to full mount and even escape.
wow, this is a beast move. def going to practice on this one.
Renzo Gracie is THE man!
Ty
genius! so beautiful
Renzo Gracie has a great No-gi 4 DVD
instructional set that I have.
I got it from Bootleg Videos.
thanks for the response man ..
Wish I was there!
i have done this so many times in rolling...even pulled it once in a competition! i actually learned it watching tate fighting in strikeforce..she did a variation where she put up her knee and stuf..but i picked it up at once and knew that was a pretty darn good move for people who like to go for the double leg...i always got cought by that guillotine even if i passed..then i started trying it out and it works beautifully i love this choke! and if it fails you have the option of an armtriangle
A good practice is to also never put your head on their side. Put it on their chest. You can still do solid takedowns without giving your neck.
1st !!!! Great vid, quality material !!!
nice
Damn baby.
What do you do if your leg gets trapped in half guard on the way down?
Thanks it gana help in my fight. big thanks renzo
Nikita Krylov missed this class.
0:25 "And then suddenly it get a little loose and he was able to pull it out, entendeu? After he had to put ice..."
Renzo accidentally saying portuguese words in the middle of an English speech lol. That happens to me too
Marcelo Lima listen to it again, he clearly said "you know?"
Where is this gym at ? I love the all in one mats. any idea on how it was made ? LOVE THE VON FLUE BY THE WAY!
This escape, except for the choke at the end is on the Gracie Combatives DVD's. I guess they didn't want to teach that choke because like Renzo said a lot of people don't realize it's a choke until it's too late.

U guys know the name of this counter choke?
can someone plz explain y u put ur arm over the shoulder ? ... its really hard to understand what he's saying because of the the buzzing noise
Damn useful
easy work

what did he say before "one-two finish"?

the vanfluke choke
yes man im trying to go for that, its just that sometimes i end up on the bottom of a sprawl so i lift my head and ram to the side at which point my opponent usually takes my neck. hahaha but thanx for the comment it is very helpful
is this move legal for kids to do?
i saw it from Ralek Gracie
That's a nice move...
The old von shoe
That's why I train under this guy and his instructors
i'm afraid to try that at home with my friend. He and I would get neck injury. I have no idea how these guys are working that out on dayly basis
neck exercises they do that in the warm up
cuz you're trying at home...not getting real teaching. likely your entire game and technique are wrong
awsome technique! thanks for sharing. im gonna let someone guillotine me just to set them up. in class by the way.
He couldn't, just like you said. He was pressed against the cage, Jon's weight, strength, and Lyoto's weight were all working against Lyoto, this wasn't even an option.

I don't understand what he does with his right arm on the ground. Does he place it behind the opponent's head?
+GingoBil look up other lessons on the "von flue" choke
+GingoBil Underhand grip and relax the right shoulder then palm-to-palm grip.

Name one UFC champion that doesn't know BJJ. Yeah, I thought so.
bad sound quality
watch miesha tate vs zoila frausto in strickeforce..you see it in action..you wont finish everybody with it but it sure as hell is usefull! and will make the other guy think twice before going for the guillotine again
Voz igual à do Sérgio Malandro.
Renzo seems like the most layed back Gracie
Von Flue choke
This is transition from being choked to von flue choke someone
This is a great defense. But the elbow is on the side on the Guillontine choke. yeah I watched it but every position has a reversal if you are not in the moment and you analyse it later

von flue choke
Is Renzo the best Gracie in Jiu-Jitsu?
R P no
Recognize Real Rickson?
R P imo yes
Roger Gracie👍
Not true, people didn´t know what to do wich is different...
Pancake
I never said about multiple opponents but you are blind if you think Gracie is perfect, the style is full of lies like most of the styles, besides I don´t see Jiu JItsu guys ruling everyone...
Name one who doesn´t train striking and wrestling...I love BJJ but I hate the arrogant part of its practicioners...
