Howdy folks. A family member encouraged me to come back here and read the comments. Thanks for all of the positive vibes. Several folks asked about the $1000 price. Bear in mind that I ran a business and worked more-than full-time for years on end without pay, and THEN put in another $1K to buy the airplane. So I more than earned it in sweat equity. It's only a bargain if you just count the dollars. I also saw questions about using the extra power at altitude. The power is limited by RPM , not throttle position. So you can use full throttle at any altitude and you can use the extra RPM for five minutes. I normally use it for takeoff and initial climb until I get to pattern altitude. That's less than two minutes most days.
Welcome back, enjoyed that. Liked David, knows his stuff and I liked his personality.
Agreed
Back in the early 80’s when my dad got back into flying he rented a 152 or a 172. When taking off in those plane with me in the right seat they took forever. Then he bought a Maule 4 seater (not sure of the model) and after being in the Cessna’s that plane was a rocket. Alas life happens and he wasn’t able to find time for flying and sold the Maule. But I enjoyed those adventures.
Yes! Great to see you back. Love this channel!
One of my favorite videos from FD.
That is one awesome Skyhawk. Love that deep throated Continental sound! Been missing these vid's Bobby. Glad to see you back.
As a guy who did avionics in the Marines, graduated from a 2 year school with my avionics, and another 2 year school with A&P degrees, and later got my actual A&P, I have to say this guy is my hero.
I have all this school learning. Now, I just need work! I would really like my pilot's license, too.
Hey, a few years ago at Stinson Field (San Antonio, TX), I saw an RG 172 with a constant speed prop. I thought it was a 182 until I saw the engine. Think you could get someone to show you one of those?
Good to see you back Bobby! Nice seeing this XP 172. Seemed like a cool pilot!
I like Dave he knows his stuff 🖖🏻
Awesome 172, reminds me of the T-41 that I did my first solo in. Lots of power and tons of fun on climbout.
Hi Bobby, Great to see you flying Doodles again!! Feels one more step back to normal!!
Nice Skyhawk! It's begging for a STOL kit, tundra tires, and a sandbar.
I googled the others and learned something. What’s a sandbar?
@@yankkesrule google, landing on a sandbar
Well it's not a Skyhawk, but sure.
How cool is it to have your job. Thanks for sharing. I really enjoy your channel to fly in the coolest planes and experience virtually the different planes. Thanks again. And good job.
It’s been a while for a flying doodles. I’ve been getting my Jones with sailing doodles!!!
More bikini clad women there!
Jeremy literally one of the bonuses!
Great to have you back... and very cool plane and demo flight.... so cool. Thanks David.
Back in 1978 I would fly a 172XP, and it was a lot of fun. I only weighed about 120 lbs. and by the time I advanced the throttle all the way I was already rotating -- It was that quick, just a few seconds. And by the time I got to the end of the runway, I was practically at pattern altitude. It was amazing, a ton of power. Loved that airplane.
Back in the day, Cessna would normally refurbish and sell the prototypes and certification airframes as if they were new production aircraft, and they eventually did that with the XP too. But first Cessna Engineering Flight Test held back the XP prototype for three years of "additional testing" (wink wink) because it was just so much fun to fly.
@@davidbunin5977 Thank you for that.
Good seeing another Flying Doodles episode and a nice one. I can't wait for the next one. Cheers
I like this guy because he knows what he’s talking about. Best engineers are those that rose up from the ranks, although you can find some good school engineers it’s few and in between. Most of good schooled mechanical engineers were the ones that were shade tree mechanics growing up. I also love how he talks, straight to business.
Love this plane! Got my license in 1985 and flew my first couple years in the T-41C. I've flown many hours in the XP and have nothing but good things to say about it. It is fantastic! The sound of the engine when it cranks up is exhilarating! if your experience is in a 152, 172, Warrior, or the like. When you fire this up, you'll think you're firing up a P-51. Its a 182 in a 172 body and at a more affordable price. Great video!
I flew the 172xp many times and I love it!
Hey Bobby, you promised more Flying Doodles, and you didn't mess around! Great to see a new episode! I only recently discovered you, but I've been enjoying both your channels!
Love to see you back in the air. Love both you channels!
That is some airplane for a Cessna 172. Love your videos, Bobby . Extremely informative and always enjoyable. Not a regular 172 as you said so well in the video. Hope you are doing OK and taking the necessary precautions for Covid-19. Anxiously await your next video!
This is good to see! I was a partner for 10 years in a 1977 Hawk XP based at Rocky Mountain Metro (5650' elevation). I loved that it got off the runway on hot summer days like it was flying at sea level. I didn't love that with 50% more cylinders, it seemed to have more than 50% more engine maintenance cost. Other than that, what a nice airplane!
This has been educational. I thought the Skyhawk XP was 180 horse engine. I learned something.
I have a friend who lives in the Rockwall area. Great upgrade for the 172. I like the description, "basically a 182 in a 172 airframe" N I C E !!!
Bobby, I love this series! I am shopping for an airplane and it's awesome to be able to see what is out there and how they handle. Please keep up the good work!
I love the XP. Flying out of a Colorado field at 5,082 feet, it climbs like a normal 172 at sea level.
How funny, I learned to fly at F46 back in 2001 on N6472K. I used to wash the old retired guys airplanes to go for rides.
Great to see they finally re-striped
it, RIP 16/34!
I have some time in the 172 XP. Love it!!
Do some more vids with David....great sense of humor.
Always Fun flying in the backseat with you and your Pilot friends! Follow you on Flying and Sailing Doodles, Great Times and Thanks for the rides so far! Stay Well & Thumbs Up as Always!
N758JR from 1979 to 1985 when I upgraded to a Cessna 310. Loved the XP.
Good to see an old face, worked with David at Southwest, good guy and Engineer.
Good to see you back in the air again 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Glad you're home.
I really enjoyed this episode, Bobby, as I co-owned an XP in the Caribbean. Always enjoyed the Climb performance in order to extend my over water glide distance between islands. As an pilot/A&P it was easy to maintain and fly. It’s useful load was extremely useful also, during resupply and medevac missions. I would buy another without hesitation! Keep up the good work!
I loved my 172XP (N736WA). Broke my heart when hurricane Hugo destroyed it. 🤕
Super interesting listening to everyone's individual story and how they came to buy the plane and become pilots. I love it. Everyone has a story
Shout out to David! What did you do for King Radio? Back in the day (I think it was Harding Administration - or possibly the Pleistocene era - anyway, there WAS fire, and a wheel) I was a reporter there - my first "big break." I'd earned my wings down at FAT while studying journalism at Fresno State. Wanted to be a commercial pilot - got kinda suckered into Navy AVROC but "the war" ended (fortunately) and I took another path. Did a lot of my flying out of BFI. Even got 1 hour in one of Boeing's simulators (a birthday present). I flew for years, but journalism pulled me away - wound up a White House correspondent for KOMO-TV and then joined ABC News as a national affairs editor and writer. Flying changed so much over the years - it kind of left me behind, but it never in spirit. Really so nice to see someone much younger with an interesting connection. Many thanks to Bobby too for the channel.
Annapolis MD !!! Great to hear you are heading out
So happy about new content!
When they got a warning about the helicopter traffic and Bobby responds with "I seen him a second ago". It reminds me of the PSA flight 182 that collided with a Cessna over San Diego in 1978. The pilot of the Boeing 727 (PSA flight 182) also said "I seen him just a second ago, I think we already passed him on our left side" and right as he finished that sentence they collided killing everyone in the 727 and the Cessna 172. All together 144 people died, 7 of them were killed on the ground when the 727 fell on a neighborhood. The 727's pilots last words on the CVR were "This is it baby".
So cool!!! Great editing, great airplane. I learned a lot!
Thanks Bro!
I’ve always wanted to fly a Hawk XP, I got my private and have about 280 hours in 1977 172N and always thought one of these would be a natural progression.
I fly the exact same aircraft but it is on straight floats currently. So much fun
I enjoyed it so much Bobby! Flying or sailing you are awesome!
The guy is super knowledgeable, and I'm sure the plane runs great. Outside and inside looks pretty knarly.
Brought a new one back to Troutdale from the factory. It was a carburetor version. Had a great approach into Cheyenne in a snow storm; broke out at 400ft. Took my uncle up to see his house in Salt Lake. Excellent IFR platform. ERAU Prescott 1980. CFIA&I
He was just up at KHQZ doing a pre-buy for our 150! Cool plane and cool guy👍🏼
150 video is up now. I bought it.
My niece lives in Rockwall, so it was nice to see where she lives. Very nice flight.
Woow, back to business ha ha!! Nice plane , even nicer guy!!!!!
I like the woodgrain panel.
and welcome home Bobby give goose a lot of love while your home.
He’s back !!!!
Glad to see a new episode. Great one too!
Great to see another episode!
Hey Bobby, Welcome back I've been missing Flying doodles. That's a really cool 172 that David has. You hit a couple of airports that I'm very familiar wth in this video. I flew into Rockwall several time while working on my PPL. Rockwall is a bit deceiving due to the hill in the center of the runway, makes it look a lot shorter than it is coming in on final. After I got my PPL a good friend of mine had a Piper Colt based at Airpark east, it was a challenge taxing the Colt on those narrow taxiways and runway, the colt has a castering nose wheel and with any kind of a crosswind it would become really challenging.
Nice to see flying doodles back
Taylor is cute, but as a pilot, I do love the Flying Doodles channel too. Thanks Bobby!
Some good comedy there at 12:50... Runway looks wider at night... thats because the lights are off in the grass... laughs....
I always wanted to fly an xp never got to nice airplane nice sounding engine
Cool guy very nice airplane also. Very knowledgeable
Appreciated the clip! The five youtube add interruptions put me off though...
Very cool, smart, C172, a rarity too, thanks for sharing.
Hey a new FD! We missed you! The C19 has really hit our local airport pretty hard. The flight school have been struggling to find ways to meet the state guidelines.
Nifty airplane. I’ve never flown one but it sure looks like a fun plane up here in mountain country. Nice job, Bobby.
It's been a while. Another Fantastic video man! Huge like for this one
Thanks! More coming soon! Already filmed. Are you in Dominica the islands? I’ll be there next sailing season. Let’s film something !
@@FlyingDoodles Awesome. Yeah, I'm from the island Dominica in the Caribbean but I'm not currently there.
I have one of these, same paint and colours! Except the light blue and dark blue are opposite on mine!
Great mini bush plane. Just perfect for 2 guys and heavy baggage for weekend hunting trip out of short strip.
Such a cool video, love it! I want to learn how to fly. David seems like a great guy. Thank you Flying Doodles.
I have never even heard of an XP before. Super cool!
When I learn this is the gentleman I want training me.
My goal is a Diamond DA50RG or DA62, but I'll start with a Pipistrel Virus SW or a Diamond DA20.
Being 6’-5”, I have fond memories training in a Hawk XP. Couldn’t fit very well in a 152. Not to mention weight & balance here in CO :-)
I'm 6'7" and 238 lbs, my father is 6'2" 220 lbs. We flew a 152 together once in a while when the wings were less than a half full of fuel, and it still took forever to climb. We also squeezed into an RV-7, but no weight/balance issues there but talk about a tight fit! Even my 172 is a tight fit for 2 guys with above average shoulder width. Planes weren't made for bigger pilots, lol.
@@chadcoady9025 I'm 5'8 and hope to get a Pipistrel Virus SW or Diamond DA20 to start.
I'm glad I'm short because sports cars are my passion.
My first was the 74 Fiat 124 Sport Coupe designed and built by 2 former Ferrari engineers who were working for Fiat.
So, basically a poor man's Ferrari for my first car.
It wasn't the Spider Convertible I'd originally sought, but was shown the Coupe with the bigger backseat and trunk, so more useful for an 18 yo Sailor training at Little Creek Naval base.
A warrant officer was transferring and had brought it over from Italy with custom red leather interior and white body.
Immaculate.
My shirt was on the wall at Lear Avia.Stead/Reno.1974
Back when it was in production Cessna told us it was a seaplane design. Better useful load on floats. It never sold at all against the 180 hp Piper Archer, that airplane was less expensive because of the fixed prop, and went faster on less fuel. That's a very tough sell, the seaplane market never signed on, Cessna overbuilt production of everything in '79, the entire GA market started to tank, and production ended.
Interesting STC on the 210 hp, hadn't heard of that.
Welcome Back!
#MorePower
Got an XP on floats. It’s currently on wheels. Lots of fun!
Nice one, Bobby 👍
Welcome back, Bobby!! I'll bet it felt great to be back in the air!
great to have you back i just got back from flying myself hey bobby just to let you know you can fly m LIGHT SPORT with no medical its a great way to fly and the light sport planes that are coming out are no joke they are beautiful and fully equiped with all the latest glass panel instruments
The 360 is the perfect engine. It cost almost no more to fly and maintain than the 320, and the weight is good. It's perfect whether 180, 200, or in this case, 210hp. The CSP fills in what is missing on the 172. For the extra it costs to buy and maintain it more than makes up for with economy and engine life. As soon as you add two more cylinders, everything costs substantially more.
Jack T Do you know if the 210hp throttle setting ( not sure how to ask this) is available full time once a certain altitude is reached. In other words once it can’t make more than 195 due to air density is it allowed to go up in rpm to the 210 full throttle on continuous basis? I’m thinking it could have a significantly higher best cruise altitude if fully opening throttle is possible.
I like the cessna 172 hawk xp
Outstanding
That was nice. I had a 182 RG but went back to the 172. Flying doodles?. Thank you and stay safe
look like a mixed version of short-field and soft-field takeoff. Anyways I love the plane! Great video.
Cessna/Textron, needs to face lift the high wing, single piston series of aircraft!
Would be easy to make a few modern upgrades to the 177 by utilizing composites here and there to get useful load up/reduce drag...include a full fadec diesel option, a 180-H.P. and 200-H.P. power-plant and replace the old 172!
Note: the horizontal stabilizer issue has already been addressed with slats.
Get it done Textron!
🙏🇺🇲💪
There was also a Rocket Reims version with 210 hp in europe ;)
Really knowledgeable pilot! Great video!
I delivered a lot of boats to that lake. Great video.
Flew in an XP once....thumbs up. 👍✈️
Great Explanation. I'm sorry they weren't hiring when you graduated.
His friend who used the plane did his solo the exact same day I did mine!!
Rockwall Texas? Check out Gloria’s Resturant and take a look at that chandelier.... it’s awesome.. Great Video..!
Thanks guys.Love it.
Nice airplane! It would make a GREAT glider tow plane.
Pipistrel has a motorized glider.
They're the leaders in that technology. I think it's called the Sinus.
Can't see contact info for this Pilot, David! Great & Fun 172 XP Video! Thumbs UP!
Thumbs up for the Tim Tailer reference.
Need to paint those door hinges. Great looking plane. Welcome back FD..
Yeah, honestly the whole plane could use a paint job. Cosmetics aren't my strong suit.
@@davidbunin5977 David I loved your story. The plane is great. I like to nit pick. I went to A&P school as well in the late 80's. Got a job in a different field so never turned a wrench commercially. Going into avionics and becoming an engineer and CFI was a great way to enjoy your passion. Cheers to you and your old girl. Keep them flying. Flying doodles is more about the people than the planes to me.
Love the video thanks once more. 👍
Loved It!
