  • The 2012 Non-Retina MacBook Pro was the last truly upgradeable and repairable laptop that Apple made. The RAM can be upgraded to 16GB. The hard drive can be replaced with an SSD, and most importantly the battery can be easily removed and replaced. Even if these machines are almost 10 years old you can keep them alive and performing well with very little effort.
Today we’re going to show you how easy it is to replace the battery in a 2012 Non-Retina MacBook Pro.
We used our Pro Tech Toolkit for this video!

This teaches us that batteries do not need to be superglued in place.

But screws are expensive. They made shape them one by one by swiss clockmasters using only wooden toothpicks. So glue is the best option.

@@ummjonny6696 They were being sarcastic. If that were true then every MacBook would be glued shut. Although I can imagine seeing Apple doing that in the near future. They'll have some excuse about making the machines thinner or something. But in reality all it will achieve is faster thermal throttling, the machine ungluing itself because it runs so hot all the time, and a laptop that's more difficult to open and repair.

Caden Churchill Well, if you can repair your MacBook yourself easily and for cheaper than a new Mac, why would you buy a new Mac. However if your device is unrepirable, you have to get Apple to repair it (Always overpriced, with the intention to make you buy a new one). And yes, I mean unrepairable by user such as Touch ID, or batteries that are paired to your specific device so you can not repair it yourself

    • @hugodeandres1497
      @hugodeandres1497 Před 4 lety +1

That is just talking about repairs but your mentioned modularity and upgrades which is even worse for Apple, you get the chance to have a new device for less that what it would cost to buy a new one. Just imagine you could get a new year’s processor on your 2010 Mac. Why would you upgrade? Apple is just a company

Let’s start by gluing down the battery, proceed to soldering the ram and ssd, laminating the display and making sure the flex cable is part of the display so if the flex cable fails all of it needs to go, and last but not least rivet the entire keyboard so it cannot be easily replaced.”

These batteries are easy to replace. The battery is the most important thing. Dont get a crappy replacement battery like I did. For such an old laptop I didnt think apple would have these batteries so I grabbed one from an online dealer I followed the instructions. After 4 cycles this thing is already down to 93% health. My previous apple battery had about 7 years with about 84 health before I started having trouble with it. I do everything to prevent battery drain, even with wifi off it is still draining steadily even though I am not doing anything but interrupting the screensaver.

a modular battery that is easily removable needs to be strengthened with a thicker case/frame to keep it safe since it's a modular component. This takes up space, making the laptop thicker and reducing battery life.
There's always a tradeoff for things like this - for them, it's more beneficial to reduce the battery armor allowing the laptop to be smaller and battery life to be increased.

This video will surely make Apple cringe. To see machines they're so eager to call obsolete performing just great for everyday tasks, and even being incredibly simple to maintain and upgrade

They can technically be used for a long time, but I have a 2011 15in MBP and it doesn't get the latest MacOS updates anymore. Stuk on 10.11.6 :(

If I remember, Apple's official excuse why modern MacBooks aren't modular is because of the T2 coprocessor. However, Apple themselves have proven that's total BS with the release of the 2019 Mac Pro, with fully modular... Everything. Why can't Apple bring that design over to a laptop? The average person buying a MacBook won't know the first thing on even opening the damn thing anyway! I'm not saying all Apple product users are stupid, just ones who drop $2000 every year on a Twitter/CZcams machine. A $150 Chromebook or $500 Windows laptop would work just as good for such tasks. Plus, Apple is encouraging people to throw their machines in the trash once the RAM and SSDs die, which would have been easily replaced and have probably bought the machine another 10 years at best, because they're literally impossible to replace unless you're skilled in microsoldering!

I think they're making the point that Apple used to make machines that were upgradeable and repairable as recently as 2012. Compare it to modern Macbook and it's like night and day. I've got a 2012 MBP like the one in the video and a 2019 one. The 2019 one has a glued in battery, non-standard screws, soldered down ram and SSD and a keyboard that is both known to fail and riveted into the case so it cannot be replaced. It cost more than the 2012 one because you needed to buy it with maxed out ssd and ram as you can't upgrade them later but it's a machine that is designed to fail in a couple of years. The 2012 MBP could in principle be kept running almost indefinitely. All of this is good for Apple because they sell more machines but it's very bad for their customers.

@@user-qf6yt3id3w don't forget the environment! That is a good point, nonetheless. Apple does have a tech recycling program, but I think it'd just be more efficient to be able to breathe new life into these newer machines when they do get old, either as a secondary device, or by giving them to someone who needs that old computer more than you.
Problem is, once any component fails, that's it. The whole computer might as well be a fancy paperweight

Some people fix up their old laptops to give to their grandparents who don't need the latest and greatest. Basically a Facebook / email machine.
