I remember rushing to get my homework done so I could play and earn more coins to buy skins. Zizzy was my favorite character out of the entire story. Pony was a close second. And like everyone else, I shipped them.
Sometimes, I searched for notes from TSP instead of escaping. I wracked my brain with theories about who they were and what they wanted. I binged theories on YT by AntAntixx and KreekCraft. I even considered making my own videos, but I never had time.
There were days where I played Piggy all day long and worried about nothing else. My sister teased me about playing the game. I even "tried" a food I absolutely *loathed* to get her to play it for just 1 minute. It was Book 1, Chapter 10, at the mall. She tried to get into the vent where Mousy was, but she didn't crouch in time, and Robby infected her. I jokingly offered her a chance to try again, and she declined.
Then, someone found the Secret Ending in Chapter 12. It was all anyone talked about. I refused to see a video someone posted that showed the Secret Ending, then went and found it for myself. What a thrill.
For me, this video brings back so many more memories than just the story. Sure, there was a lot of suspense and I was part of an enormous fan club consisting of hundreds of thousands, and most likely even millions, of people. This game was *huge*. The only other game I can think of that was that big -- still is -- is Brookhaven. But with or without comparison to other games, being part of a giant fanclub and interacting with other fans was nothing short of awesome.
But the things I remember most about this game is what life was like when I played it. I was in High School, itching to graduate. I toiled around the clock to reach that milestone. I was saving for a car. I was planning to take a gap year to work and save money. Everything was going to plan. I knew all my next steps. I was stable. I was *happy*.
Then it all fell apart. My mental health just about flatlined. I ate too little. I slept too much. I could barely get out of bed. I had no energy. I cried behind closed doors. I was either numb or terrified every waking moment.
But I got help. I got better, for the time being.
In mid-April, it will be three years since that happened.
But I'm still not the same. I never will be. I'm going to be on antidepressants and mood stabilizers for the rest of my life. I will have PTSD and Social Anxiety Disorder, among other things, for as long as I live.
This song brings back so many memories of rearview days when I was financially stable, when I never worried about everything every minute of the day. When I was truly happy. When I could look to the future without worrying about what's going to go wrong, whether I'm doing the right thing, whether I'm making a senseless mistake. When I could dream without second-guessing myself.
I would give anything to go back. Literally anything except my soul. The worst thing is knowing there's no going back.
As a wise man once said, "I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them."
