Hey everybody, how's it going Today, we're gonna be going over and showing you how to install the Roadmaster Diode Flat Tow Wiring Harness here on a 2022 Ford F-150. So the wiring harness is just one of the many things that we need in order to successfully flat tow our F-150 here. In addition to this, we're gonna need a base plate kit, a tow bar, safety cables, and a supplemental braking system. Now what our wiring is gonna do is, simply put, it's gonna transfer these signals from our motor home to our vehicle here so we can let other motorists out in the road know what signals are gonna be making. Keep in mind this is a legal requirement in every state because a lot of the times, your vehicles are actually gonna block the taillights on your motor home. So we need a safe way to communicate those signals to other motorists allowing us to arrive to our destinations safe and sound.
Diode wiring harnesses are the best option if you ask me. They're the ones I personally prefer and what I would install on my personal vehicle. Now with a dialed wiring harness here, we're gonna be utilizing the factory taillights there. So you don't need to worry about dangling wires or installing magnetic lights on the top of your vehicle. And you don't have to actually modify the taillights at all whatsoever like you would for a bulb and socket kit.
However, the diode wiring harness, you do have to splice into the factory wiring harness, but it's only a couple wires on each side. Overall, in the grand scheme of things, very minor. Now this kit is gonna transmit all the basic lighting functions you need to remain legal, such as the stop and turn signal circuits for either side and the running light circuit. Now in addition to the vehicle side, we're also gonna have the option available to add an umbilical for a complete setup. So not all kits come with the umbilical, but we do actually have three different options for those umbilical should we want to choose one of those.
So the umbilical is simply going to transfer the lights from the motor home to our vehicle here. And there's actually a couple different options. It's really gonna come down to what tow bar you have. So if we have a tow bar, such as this Blue Ox one here, without any sort of guides for to run our wires through, it's just a tow bar there, there's no channels or anything, that's where we wanna opt for the completely coiled umbilical. So what the coiled umbilical does is it's gonna make sure that your wire is not dragging on the ground.
However, if we do have a tow bar, with those integrated channels, that's when we wanna look at one of the other two options we have in front of us. Now over here we have these straight umbilical cord that's just gonna simply loop through those channels and plug into the vehicle and the motor home. And then we have the hybrid one. So the hybrid one is gonna slide through the channels on the tow bar arm, but on this side here, you're also gonna get a coiled section. That way, it's just again, gonna further reduce the chances of the wire dragging on the ground. And then if you just opt for the simple four-way version there, there is gonna be a basic umbilical cord that attaches to your vehicle here and plugs into the motor home. The benefit of adding the seven to six-way connection is we can actually add a battery charge line circuit, which is gonna to use the motor home's battery to charge the vehicle battery. Now in regards to installation, this kit is definitely doable for a weekend warrior. It's something you can do by yourself at home in a few hours depending on your experience level. There's really not any major modifications to the vehicle. The bulk of your installation is just gonna be routing the wire from the front to the rear and mounting your trailer connector. But we'll actually show you a cool little trick for mounting that trailer connector. And then in regards to when we we do get to the rear, there is gonna be a couple splices we need to make, but again, it's very minor. It's not something that's gonna be too drastic or have any consequences on our vehicle here. With that being said, we're actually gonna walk you through this entire process step by step now. So to start our installation today, we're gonna take our trailer connector here. Now keep in mind, depending on what kit you have, you may have a four-way or a six-way trailer connector. Our kit that we're gonna be installing today is a six-way, but a four-way is we're gonna be pretty much the same. So there's not a whole lot of options for mounting our trailer connector on the front of the
