They could have avoided all critique simply by making this story with other characters. The setting of "The Crow" makes it ideal to adapt the same story over and over but in different timelines and with different characters. But by making this about Eric Draven they put the "remake shackles" on this movie.
Damn! Yes! This. Such a waste. Hollywood is where imagination and fresh storytelling go to die.
Since the original, there have been many "the Crow" stories, about different people coming back to face loss and tragedy. This could have been one of those, but by making it a rehash of the Eric and Shelly story they aren't adding to it, they're kinda diminishing it.

You know, every attempt at rebooting the original has been met with one pull away after another with writers, directors, and actors which left it in limbo as if someone or something was trying to tell them something. Now with this, it won't take much at all for people to realise that some films are better left be. The original can never be outdone, and this here is ample proof as to why.

Some movies just don’t need remakes. The original is a classic and tragically was Brandon Lee’s final performance, and the sequels that came after probably shouldn’t have even been made, but this just doesn’t need to exist.
There was a book they could have used as a guide. James O'Barr was even nice enough to draw it out so you could also see his vision.
James had several books with many different characters available; some he wrote, some that friends did. Any of them could have been used to help them along.
James was not involved with this movie
