This is the third part of a week-long series of videos celebrating Stephen Sondheim’s 90th birthday. Each day I will be posting a Starkid dreamcast of a different Sondheim show. #SilvanaSondheimWeek Today’s pick is Merrily We Roll Along. There’s a cameo from a certain someone and a special theme for this video. See if you can figure it out :)
How I chose the cast: For this video and the rest of the series I chose the cast based on who I generally think would be best for each role. I didn't stick strictly to the vocal range of the characters because that would seriously limit the options, especially with some of Sondheim's characters. While I did try to pick people with a similar voice part of each character, the more important factor was if I thought they could portray the character well through acting and if they fit the type for each character physically and vocally.

The filmed clips featuring Sondheim and Darren are from the 2013 HBO documentary "Six by Sondheim" (it's great you should watch it).
I also recommend the documentary "The Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened" about the making of Merrily We Roll Along. It's currently on Netflix - Zábava
I'm not even a little bit disappointed with this, every casting choice was seriously stellar! Also I'm so glad I'm not the only person who thinks Joey would be a fantastic Charley. He would especially have a heartbreaking dynamic with Darren as Frank, considering how much of their real life friendship and history could carry over into it.
Also just how not the case it seems to be for Darren? I love how he includes them in a ton of projects he’s doing and he always seems to come back for stuff they do.
I need to hear Joey singing Franklin Shepard Inc, like, yesterday (also I can't believe I forgot Darren was in Six by Sondheim)
Yes! That would be amazing! And I have dreamed of Darren as Frank since that documentary came out.
These picks are just *chef kiss.* I would also pay good money to see Robert Manion as Charlie once he’s old enough for the role, or Joe Josephson once he’s even older. And I feel like Curt and Kim would also be fantastic as Frank and Beth.

Oh yeah, I was thinking about Curt and Kim in the roles as well the other day! Funny thing, I actually had this whole thing where I cast Merrily using only the cast of Black Friday, just to narrow down my choices, and I had Jeff as Joe, Lauren as Gussie, Kim as Beth, Jaime as Mary, Jon or Joey as Charley, and Dylan or Curt as Frank.

I've honestly been thinking about this for years! The subtext coming through would just be too much to handle, like the "cool doesn't come from other people" scene from AVSPY but even sadder.
Omg Old Friends and Not Alone do totally have the same vibe at the end, I love it
I love this dreamcast! I did one of my own a couple months ago. It differs quite a bit, but funnily enough, Mary, Charley and Frank are all the same.

@@SilvanaLTD Ahh that's clever, and actually kind of makes meta sense too because the whole show is about going back to the beginning of their friendship and their artistic journeys, which makes the connection to AVPM very appropriate!
