I'm not sure where you live, but I just split a gut laughing when you said $50 bucks. The latest nippers I just ordered are $129 before tax and shipping...lol
I love your advice to those just getting started as far as what tools to buy on a budget; but, I have got to be the biggest scrounger, beggar, will approach foremen at renovation sites for excess tiles kind of girl, and it should be noted here that mosaic art is not cheap. I believe you can always find old tiles, plates, or other mediums to create your art with; but, you should always invest in the very best tools you can afford. Having the right tools makes the hours of cutting and shaping you will do an enjoyable and creative part of your creative process, having poor quality tools makes cutting an arduous task. Tools can be a one-time investment if you start with the best, and don't cheap out. Stained Glass, Smalti, Tessera are not cheap investments, I would recommend people make sure they have the right tools to start with. Compound nippers, a good pair of side biters, glass scorers & running pliers should all be top quality, they can cheap out on everything else. At least that's what I tell my students starting out. And believe it or not, Father's Day is the best time for mosaic artists to go shopping for tools and materials.

Thank you, thank you for your informative videos!!! I am very new to mosaics and beginning with making step stones with pre-made concrete step stones and using broken plates from Dollar Tree. I am loving it and getting the hang of it even though these plates are difficult to deal with. Can you tell me what you cover your table with? I use a desk with plastic over it, then use cardboard to put the step stones on.

Hi Julie…I just started watching mosaic videos as I was hoping to try my hand doing a mirror frame with a ceramic sink that was mailed to me and broke in transit. There are parts of the sink that are thicker than 1/4”. Can you recommend a tile nipper that would open wider? Thank you! On a side note, your videos are the best out there on this subject. Very informative and easy to understand! And I love your humor 😂

(6:04) I'm pretty sure this is available at dollar stores. It's sold as a "knife sharpener." (It does work well as a knife sharpener). I have one and I'm a notorious cheapskate.

Hi Victoria! I have 2 grinders...one for glass exclusively and one for ceramic/porcelain. I can't find either of my models online but this one (amzn.to/3dqPiCr) is a very popular model, and it's the same brand as my ceramic/porcelain grinder which I've been using for 20+ years. It's still going like a workhorse. If you do get the Techniglass model (amzn.to/3DAnNRA), make sure you also get the eye shield. Power tools! SO FUN! Keep creating and I'm so glad you're here!🔥

Hi Julie, Thanks for all the help, support guidance and inspiration that you share with us! I am now breaking plates as a beginner in piques Assiette mosaics. My question is: Some of the plates --fiesta ware and others are so difficult to break. I am using a compound tile nipper for the hard to break stuff---but still am unable to break some of the plates. Do you have any suggestions? I also have a wheeled nipper. But I am willing to buy something else if it can help me break the

Hi MM Riccio! Awww, thanks for your kind words!😊 It's great to hear you're enjoying my channel and getting value from the videos. Ah yes, Fiestaware. I know it well. I've got a bunch of that myself. I love it! But I agree, it's super thick and difficult to cut with traditional mosaic hand-cutting tools. I have 2 suggestions for you. The first is a table saw (amzn.to/3ToqJGs), this one is small, compact and will do the job of cutting thick plates. It will give you a very controlled way of cutting the exact-size shapes you'd like. The second suggestion is to try a hammer (amzn.to/3ToqJGs). Keep in mind it doesn't allow you to control the size or shape of the pieces. And hammers can crush pieces of tesserae as well which is a bit wasteful. Keep creating and I'm so glad you're here!🔥
What would you say is the best for China? China plates and cups etc? So I'm guessing that would be considered like ceramic 🤷🏼
