      @@paulczerner3286 You’re right. But the crowds are not about them, either. I watch challenger events all the time (along with the handful of spectators) so I get the fact that theirs is not a life of glitz and glamour. I also admire them for sticking with it but that’s a different concept altogether. I’d def watch that but it’s not what they’re marketing here. That’s my point.

  • @joelmvdqp
    @joelmvdqp Před 2 měsíci +8

    In the United States, tennis could benefit from improved marketing strategies. This factor may have contributed to the less successful launch of Break Point.

  • @johndye9494
    @johndye9494 Před 2 měsíci +10

    Disagree completely with "no star power" and tennis being a "star-driven sport." This approach to marketing tennis is fundamentally flawed and really hurts the sport. True fans of sport can get huge entertainment value -- often more so than "star" matches -- from watching first round competition between players ranked 100+. Those matches are critically important to both players and often are more close and competitive. It's all in how it is framed and presented.
    Agree that the canned/scripted commentary in Season 2 was awful. So was the editing and score representation -- did the editors even understand how tennis works?
    Yeah it was a year behind, but I really enjoyed watching Season 1 (covering 2022) as 2023 was getting under way, because it reminded me of some great moments, but it also caught me up on a lot of story lines and details I had missed.
    Season 2 definitely was too self-aware and self-promoting. Almost felt like it was put together by a completely different crew.
    Season 1 was great in many ways, but I particularly liked getting a close look at how Swiatek and her team operate, along with the Jabeur, Kyrgios and Tomljanovic threads. Uncanny that she was Serena's final U.S. Open loss!
    Overall Season 1 was excellent; Season 2 had a half-baked quality that bounced around too much in time and overlooked some of the best stories. The best part about Season 2 for me was the Zverev rehab and comeback (I had no idea he was such a driven, serious guy), although they should have included something about the domestic violence. I also liked seeing Rune's dynamic with his mom. FAA being coached by Uncle Toni was more fizzle than sizzle, which surprised me.
    The "best American" thread was a little strained and completely left out Seb Korda, my personal favorite among the American men.
    If they (or another company) were to try again, I'd definitely like to see some focus on Korda, along with Grigor Dimitrov, Mackenzie McDonald, Maxime Cressy, Elena Rybakina (doubt she would allow it), Qinwen Zheng, Emma Navarro, Leylah Fernandez, and Karolina Pliskova (and sister). Maybe Sophia Kenin. They could also pick one or two doubles teams instead of just singles players.
    One theme to explore would be players who transitioned from college vs. those who skipped college (e.g., Kayla Day) to go straight to pro. Who is more successful in the long run?

  • @kawai99100
    @kawai99100 Před 2 měsíci +3

    Lack of the big names mentioned shouldn’t be a factor. All mentioned except Djokovic are fully or all but retired. The idea behind it should have been to promote these other rising stars, which is what I expected it to do, but it was boring and flat.
    Ruud should have been compelling. Gauff and Fritz should have been featured more interestingly. Meddy should never be portrayed as a villain since he is hilarious and charming. It had to be bad filmmaking and worse editing that ruined the show.

    The reason tennis lacks fans and/or attention is because it is so hard to access on tv! If you stream - you have to have a “provider”. If you pay $100 for the Tennis Channel - which we did - you still only get certain matches with either no commentators or boring ones. They certainly do not make it easy for fans to watch or support.

    • @theresamorgan8065
      @theresamorgan8065 Před 2 měsíci +1

      I totally agree! ESPN shows cornhole and pickleball--but hardly shows any tennis except the US Open. You have to count on CZcams to catch most WTA matches - even the Tennis Channel shows lower ranked male players instead of showing American women matches. It's very sad that you can't see more tennis on TV.

    Featuring Alexander Zverev’s episode was one of the best episodes hands down. They actually focused on his training and some of the hard work these players go through. We needed more episodes like this.
    This show needs to focus on the competition and the players leading into that competition. Almost zero is shown or even talked about in regards to their preparation. It’s simple. The show jumps around a lot, chops and changes. We don’t need to see the big names, just need good, true story telling. Stop fabricating everything.

    Did Break Point have flaws? Sure. But it did take you behind the scenes with some great personalities--and some not so great ones (see next sentence). The Zverev episode was indeed cringe worthy, but it was one of 16 episodes, and even in that one with its significant flaws, you still had the chance to learn some things about life on tour. I'll check out Daria Kastinkina, but enough with this pile on about Break Point. So it wasn't a smashing success, I still enjoyed it.

  • @westonmeyer3110
    @westonmeyer3110 Před 2 měsíci

    The reason why it failed is because they picked random people to feature and they don’t show how the seasons of those people went.
    They can have middling players but they need to show how they got to their current rank not just some random tournament that they didn’t lose in the 1st round in.
    Dasha’s videos are good but they are mostly not what people watching Break Point wanted either.

    Tennis is not a "star-driven sport"; its a class-driven sport. As long as the tennis establishment refuses to accommodate working people (as upstsrt Pickleball does, for example), they will never capture the public's attention.

    • @mambi74
      @mambi74 Před 2 měsíci

      Pickleball was literally invented in a backyard for family fun time together... comparing it to Tennis is misleading. Its popular because it has little to no learning curve compared to actually playing Tennis (serving for points etc) so people of all ages/abilities can go and immediately start having fun.

    Everything they showed on that show was already seen and known to any tennis fan who follows the sport. There was nothing new or spicy. It was a boring, outdated take on what was already revealed to the public. Good riddance. Hope Netflix or another potential streamer will learn from the mistakes of that show so that they can produce a better tennis doc series in the future. The new show needs to showcase more revealing, spicy anecdotes about players that the public never had access to. For example, what’s the diet of a tennis player? Are there players who don’t follow the normal strict regimen of preparation - players who are rebels, partying late into the night when others are resting for their next match? (Kyrgios???,etc.) Show some drama. Heck, it would be more interesting to see two top 100 players battling out in a heated first round match and what they did to get to that stage (playing challengers, lack of coaches, fitness trainers). Show us something we don’t already know or see on the tennis channel, etc. Be original and creative!!!

    I liked the show. Yes, it could have been better but still like it. I am sick of the bias against Zverev. I am glad they focused on the struggle of coming back from severe injury and his current relationship with how she has helped him come back. He won a defamation suit against publication who printed sensationalist accusations of first accuser and has not had a trial yet. The upcoming trial is in May when for the first time will have evidence shown in court. His lawyers stated that at trial they have medical evidence that will show current charges are false. I am sure he wanted to focus on tennis in this series.

    I don't believe featuring Zverev lead to low ratings.. I would need to see evidence of that. I know tennis is very woke but I also think people are coming around to the fact that we need evidence before we conclude anything. I just think the series wasn't emotive as the sport of tennis usually is. There was no excitement about any episode; in fact, I would say that the Medvedev vs Zverev episodes actually were interesting because they showed the mental tactics and raw emotion behind the scenes. I do agree that it was all after the fact ... meaning the season would be over and we knew who won what but then again it was always supposed to be behind the scenes stories and those were just not conveyed properly.

    Good piece, but you missed the second-biggest reason it failed. The biggest was the lack of star power, yes. The second-biggest was that there was hardly any tennis presented! Very few points were ever played out in full. And all of the best points were omitted, and all of the key turning points were absent (except match points). Wtf?! Sidenote: I also found the mega-audio amplification of each ball strike was ridiculously cartoonish... although I actually think most non-fans dig that and are oblivious about how contrived it is.

    Too far from Reality for me and then that Zverev story. Not only allegations, but the fact that Zverev had to appeal against a 450000Euro charge for domestic violence/abuse and the court trial starting end of May should have ruled him out of the show for the time being is what many people wrote as well. Offering a woman money and expecting her to sign an NDA has many people wondering about this player. Instead they made it look like Zverev's a miracle with his foot injury...and then the issue with Medvedev - no more for me thanks

In the era of social media, the audience is inundated with information about everything celebrities do, which takes away from that aura of inaccessibility. That's why the last major star in the male tennis circuit would be Roger Federer, owing to his age.
