  • Pregnancy toxemia indeed has reared its ugly head this lambing... and now we have three ewes in our sick pen.
    I induced them immediately, and it typically takes about 48 hours for labour to start.
    Unfortunately for this mama who is getting weaker by the day, hers took much longer.
    FINALLY, after 2 tries and 96 hours, we ended up with a set of quads.
    But not without some complications.

    If no one noticed, the one preg tox ewe who was constantly almost running over the bigger, sicker ewe was actually trying to protect her from Kinsey. At one point she warned Kinsey off. It seems she instinctively knew this ewe was the sickest and was protecting her family member. Sheep aren’t always as dumb as people think, especially when they’ve grown up several years together!

    Can we take a second to acknowledge what an amazing dog Kensie is? While the two hooligans wrastle on the floor, she spends her day right by Sandi making sure shes there when Sandi needs her and when there's a lamb being tended to she's there being the sweetest pupper licking it and loving on it.

      @bobbydazzler6990 Před měsícem +1

      >In newborns, heartbeat is totally dependent on breathing.
      That makes no sense whatsoever. How do you explain the months-long period where the fetus has a beating heart but is not breathing because the fetus is completely submerged in amniotic fluid?

    • @nancienordwick4169
      @nancienordwick4169 Před měsícem +3

      @bobbydazzler6990 usually the heart beat is compromised only after the umbilical cord connection is lost during or after birth. Only then does a baby need to breathe. Bag and mask breaths save most human babies that have no heartbeat at birth. Should work for other mamals too! It'll also help clear out amniotic filled lungs

      @bobbydazzler6990 thanks for the spelling catch. The heart merely needs oxygen to keep beating. Before birth, this is delivered via the placenta. The fetus, not being a separate entity from the ewe until after birth, only needs a separate oxygen delivery system after birth to stay alive.

    Sandi, watching you care for the pregtox mamas steals my heart every time. In your personal and professional life, you always have a heartful of compassion and loyalty. I wrote "loyalty" because you go the extra mile- no, 5 miles- to ensure that all your sheep have the outcomes no matter what part of the production cycle they are in. Thus, loyalty is from the true Sandi. That's why we all love and appreciate everything you do! ❤️
    I think that adding a column to track the pregtox ewes on their own records is a fantastic idea. This data will test your gut theories per ewe and as a group, as well as how to manage them, over time. Excellent idea! Just imagine if you had the data in the past, it would guide you to specific interventions.
    I am so glad that the pregtox ewe finally got the lambs delivered by you. It is sad to say, but I didn't think any would survive. So, now we have a lone lamb who will steal your heart! 🥰 Warning: when it happens, name him "wolf." 🤔 I'm not sure about his baby brother. Since you did the dextrose injections, and found the umbilical issue, I think it played a role, too. The lamb just couldn't overcome the mountain unfortunately. Regardless, the 2 cutie pies you have already are just so cute and adorable!
    Nice job on the Bobcat clean up. Mark's trailer looks brand new, too. You said on your Instagram page that he was already getting all the equipment ready to go. That reminds me of the old addage, "A stitch in time, saves nine." Believe this or not, in the second or third grade, our teacher was writing these things on the chalkboard asking what it means. No one got this saying right! Never forgot it to this day. God I'm getting old 🥺
    The market lambs were quite the fat ones! I'm not sure if you actually mentioned how old they were, but I was shocked. Was the 131lb lamb the heaviest ever based on the same time frame? It should be a record for sure if it's true!
    As always, thank you for sharing your life with all of us. Your beauty, caring, loyalty, and wisdom makes you an amazing woman! Blessings from Alabama ❤️

    You are amazing Sandi at what you do, non stop caring for your flock. Like others who watch, my eyes fill up watching these little creatures struggling to come into the world. Thank you for filming it to show us it’s all hard word, it’s not a “All natural” like so many people say. Every one is a little miracle.

    Yep, way to go Sandi! Farming is a 24/7 job. You can't just get up from your desk and go home. Leaving work at work. Even when you close the door to the barn, those critters follow you into your home. Thank you Sandi for your videos! Thank you for truth. Thank you for the wisdom. ♥️🙏👍😔

      Teaching school children is like that too. My mom was a teacher for 24 years. The kids may go home but she always brought work home with her. Even now she has been retired for 9 years she wonders how they are doing.

    I encourage all of the Brock Flock to watch the Fed by Farmers podcast where Cammy & Iona interview Mark & Sandi while they were in Scotland. There's some deep thinking going on about succession that adds even more dimension to the Brocks' story. 💕💕

    Look at the face on that little lamb oh even at three days old look at that beautiful little face oh Sandy, how can you take it every day? Oh I know they’re a lot of work, but those beautiful little faces. Some of them is just too much for words, and then there are some that are just so lovable. How could you see to let them go, oh my goodness if I was ever in your shoes and head all those beautiful faces I would probably have a larger flock than I needed but then I have to realize they are a product for the market and I do have to make a living off them. Oh that’s so cute though. Oh my goodness.😂😂😂😂

    I'd be curious to see the data on second-chance ewes. How many go on to be productive post-miss and how many go on to have problems? It'd be complicated, but you could see if it was worth keeping them or not. You already know how expensive it is to raise up a breeding ewe. Is keeping misses worth it to not have to do that as often, even if preg tox increases? That way at least when one goes down, you could tell yourself that you are still coming out ahead by saving on higher turnover even with the increased labour/headaches when 5% get preg tox. Or you might find it's not repeats at all, just age, which is a different answer. Or it's random and you can keep whoever you want!

    You'll get Orthodox Easter. We used to have some Greek Orthodox neighbours and every O. Easter they'd spitroast a whole lamb in their backyard. It smelled divine and, of course, there was always enough to share with friends and neighbours so we'd always get a huge portion.

    Can you seperate the missed breeders, and feed them differently until following breeding? See if that makes any difference down the road? Or, sell missed breeders, no second chances? I love how you share what you learn, with us. ❤

      Sandi answered my question. She uses the 'nose' diagnostic test. Ketones in the urine have characteristic "acetone" smell, like fermenting or rotten fruit 💕💕

    Sandi, thank you for being the greatest teacher about Lamb farming. I sit here during your lambing seasons, with baited breath and saying "ok grab your glove, this and that and oh man that was a tough pull."😂 I first started watching you 2 years ago when I was going through my breast cancer treatment and you were the best emotional therapy, thank you for that.❤ I look forward to all of your videos and can't wait to see what's happening on the farm during the week.
