Seiches on Lakes

  • A seiche is what happens after a storm surge in a large body of water. When the pressure difference and wind that created the surge dissipates, the lake drops back to level and then overshoots, created a surge on the other side. The seiche can oscillate back and forth several times before it dies out.

    I have heard that earthquakes can also produce seiches when the surface waves pass through a lake and can start the kind of disturbance to the water that the wind does here.

      Indeed they can, but I think it more likely that a P-wave would initiate seiche-like movement of the water (like in a water park wave tank). Not sure if an S-wave would.
