  • Despite walking away from the women's gymnastics floor final with a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics - her first in an individual event - Team USA gymnast Jordan Chiles' win has since been revoked, bumping the competitor to fifth place after reinstating the judges' initial scores, according to ESPN. And as one might imagine, Chiles, her family, and her teammates are distraught over the Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision.

      This is nothing less than a complete disaster, -on steroids! It would have been a disaster taking a medal back if it came for a day the judges were right in the first place. When that's not it, but because the protest was received 4 sec pass the bloody minute that's given the last performer, while the rest of the competitors get 4 minutes, it becomes an outrage. I mean.. They're ordering the right winner to return her medal for them to hand it over to the one who scored less!?? It was them underscoring Chiles in the first place, for crying out load, and now they're letting her pay for it by downright destroying her!
      I did also think the American team could have been a tad more considerate towards the Romanian girl when Chiles score were corrected. They were not at their best behavior in that situation. But at the same time, it's understandable, as the tension that were released in that moment must have been out of this world. But non the less, is that completely irrelevant in that context. The Romanian should know the rules, and that she started her celebration before the results were final. Chiles, on the the hand had every reason to celebrate.. Besides, the bronze was hers, as she had the 3rd best performance that day! I actually lost all sympathy towards trhe Romanian when she's actually accepting a medal that isn't hers to take.

    I AM AMERICAN, & I am totally against giving everyone an Olympic medal, just to make everyone happy. This is not some Kindergarten race.
    The Romanian got the Bronze First ( though not at a medal ceremony) because U.S. used its influence & swayed the officials.
    Finally IOC found that the appeal was late, which technically invalidated the appeal, because they themselves felt bad for stripping the rightful winner of the medal because of U.S. influence.
    I pride myself in not being a ONE-SIDED American especially the spirit of Olympics calls for all nations to come together in mutual understanding, spirit of friendship, Solidarity & fair play.
    THEN the country with a kick-ass military & that prints the world reserve currency, exerts influence by banning Russia & Belarus from the Olympics, because of the Ukraine War.
    Who is providing the Ukrainians arms & money, & had made the war drag as long as it has.... OF COURSE NOT THE UNITED STATES... Then our friend ISRAEL is not banned because it has an influential friend on its side -- the same country that gives $$$ & arms again & has always fought proxy wars.
    If Russia & Belarus got banned because of war, then World's Greatest proxy war instigattor should be banned too.
    At least from 2028, let athletes from all countries compete in the Olympic Spirit regardless of the actions of Politicians. Olympics bans Political statements but What Buffoonery do we have today ??
    Let Romania have the Bronze medal & don't these one- sided buffoons of USOC bring disrepute of spoil sportsmanship to these U.S.

      Perfection doesn't always matter if the move set isn't as difficult as another gymnast. A gymnast can do safe moves that every other gymnast does and it may seem they should get Gold for execution. But judges are willing to reward gymnast that are willing to attempt tougher move sets which is Simone has that one or two point window because does moves that are far more difficult than the other gymnasts and can still score higher even if it isn't Flawless. The judges failed all of these girls for not correctly scoring all of them. You don't reward mediocrity, you reward the ones that are willing to take higher risks.

So keeping Chile’s original bronze medal score while taking off the original deduction on the Romanian gymnast pretty much dead even with a very razor thin margin. It’s not the athlete’s fault, they shouldn’t have to pay the price for the judges mistake. Finally, the final score would’ve been super razor thin and i don’t think anyone would’ve had a problem with 3rd place being a tie, it’s not like there was a significant point gap between 3rd and 4th place to where it devalues the merits of the bronze medal.

The complaint was obviously forwarded in that time, because otherwise they would have waited with the table score. Ok, let's give the benefit of the doubt and say they made a mistake and showed the table score sooner; from Chiles results and the tablescore was like a minute and the complaint happened after 1.04 minutes after the initial score. So ok, let's say for the sake of it that is wasn's 15-30 seconds but was 25-40 secons; how can someone in like half a minute write the papers, review an entire routine, change the score and change the results table? How? And also why wasn't Sabrina Voinea compaint accepted but Chiles was? • @garywilson1688

    The one minute rule is because the last gymnast had the opportunity to see all the other contestants score and can then adjust their difficulty. She or her coaches should have informed the judges that she was changing the difficulty on that one element so the judges could have 'judged' it in real time better. She's allowed to change it as she goes but the judges could miss it. That's why her coaches only have one minute to protest after the scores are posted. If the coaches knew Chiles was going to change that one element's difficulty they would have been watching and immediately raised a protest. They didn't know either. AND there is evidentially some controversy as to whether Chiles did complete the more difficult element (a jump in the air with a sizzor kick and rotation that was supposed to rotate more than the lesser difficulty move did).

    @L1623VP Před 28 dny

    The coverage of this situation is interesting. Many say Chiles initially "won" the bronze but was then "stripped" of the medal. Neither of these things are true. It was Romania's Barbosu that initially won the bronze. It was HER name that appeared in third on the scoreboard. Chiles can't be "stripped" of something she didn't initially win. The appeal was made, and Chiles was elevated to third instead. As such, it was Barbosu who was "stripped" of the medal, although even that language is not appropriate. Neither gymnast did anything wrong, and the phrase "stripped of the medal" implies it was revoked because of wrongdoing like doping or cheating, which also isn't the case. I wish these reports would be more accurate.
    I also find it interesting that USA Gymnastics is supporting Chiles so fiercely, even vowing to go to the Swiss Tribunal to challenge the CAS denial of their appeal. Back in 2004, when Korea challenged Paul Ham's men's all-around Olympic gold medal, USA Gymnastics completely abandoned him, even asking him to give the medal to Korea's Yang Tae Young while cowering under a firestorm of media criticism that wasn't even willing to wait on passing judgement until CAS made its ruling. In the end, CAS ruled in Hamm's favor because he also had video proof confirming his rightful win. The media, however, NEVER corrected their initial false reports much less explained how Paul was completely vindicated. It would have been nice had all this support from USA Gymnastics and the media that Chiles is receiving had been there for Paul.
