  • I power-carved a female figure from a piece of reclaimed cedar. I have a piece of walnut I want to carve into a female form, but I had not done it before. This is a practice piece.

You're amazing, Cam. The fact that you could visualize that as you were carving plus the detail. I'm really looking forward to the walnut version. Take care. Bill

My thoughts exactly. Free form, visualize as you go, great proportions and good detail...on your very first try!! That would probably take me days. Great job, Cammie!

Thank you, Andrew. I studied some reference first. Who knew there were nudes on the Internet? ;) Although, doing studies from life is more helpful than photos. My wife may or may not have influenced this piece. :D

@@CammiesGarage you're too modest. To study an image is one thing but to be able to reproduce that without tracing/sketching is very impressive.

😲 That was your FIRST female figure? Amazing job, you nailed the proportions better than many artists who work with clay, stone, or paintbrush!

I made a carving also - my first and only - but it was of leaves and things that could be a bit wrong without being obvious - but a figure is different - it has to be right, so I think you did pretty well. I imagine that one of the difficult things is to get the poise right - get her standing with her center of gravity between her feet - not visibly leaning in any direction.
Your method is a very dusty one!

this seems so bafflingly difficult to me
the female form is so complex in it's beauty
it's as if I am surprised every time I have it in my hands
I am looking to carve a female outline so it should be relatively simple, but I would never dare to carve an entire being
