The very last Furore concert, I'm afraid. Joyce DiDonato stepped in (with broken leg) for Rolando Villazon who had health problems. It was thus the only concert with Paul McCreesh conducting instead of Christophe Rousset.

The most pure, truth and beauty performance of this piece. Joyce was meant to sing this...the world is better for it and has entered the harbour - thank you Joyce and G.F.Handle...Heaven sent.

AND - it's not easy to sing this sitting down! That's a real professional. She even carried on with Rosina at Covent Garden with a broken leg. But you can tell - she lives for this music. Nothing can stop her singing! A complete joy!
Forse la migliore interprete di Handel a livello mondiale,in un'epoca in cui oltre alla capacità del vibrato era indispensabile la potenza vocale,gli amplificatori non esistevano ancora.

L'ARIODANTE di Anne Sofie VON OTTER per la pregevole direzione di Mark Minkwski resta per me insuperabile ; in tutto, musicalità, grazia e carattere del personaggio. Laddove DI DONATO - qui, all'apice della sua carriera - canta Ariodante, VON OTTER lo incarna fino al midollo.
Tra l'altro, la stessa Di Donato anni dopo l'edizione di Minkowski (con lo strepitoso Polinesso di Ewa Podles) non troverà di meglio che registrare una nuova edizione, di cui francamente non si sentiva la mancanza, "dietta", per cosi' dire, da Alan Curtis, celebre per la sua totale incompetenza in materia.
She is just great, I have been listening and studying Handel for decades and I am sure this is the best Ariodante I have heard.

I do agree. Dame Janet is greatest singer of this aria, but I think Joyce D is up there with her. Two supreme artists.

A voice with real heft, warmth, and colour: not something one takes for granted in singers of this repertoire! The coloratura isn't the last word in smoothness...but how alive and present it all is! Kudos for the imaginative variation of the reprise.
Coloratura is based on staccato. What do mean it lacked smoothness, s v p??

@Gudrun74 With Händel, both Rousset and McCreesh are very dear to me (but Rousset beats McCreesh with everything else, in my opinion. His Mozart is the best I ever heard). About Curtis............ Most of the times he's a big no no for me... His Vivaldi Ercole is.... boring. And I just can't understand how someone can make Vivaldi get boring.
