Today I finally get all of my scrap lumber organized by building a scrap lumber storage cart on wheels Link to Fix This Build That • This Easy Wood Rack Ch...
This is perfect. Now, it's all lifted off the ground enough that you can get pallet forks under it and drop it on your next bonfire! Just be sure to save your casters! 😂
Another great Adam, Mr. Adam Savage, calls these "shop infrastructure" projects. They're some of my favorites because they make the shop easier and more efficient, and are always very satisfying. I'm putting one of these carts on my list. Thanks for a great video, Adam! --Adam
It’s came out great Adam. Funny how most of us dads are very like minded and similar interests. Followed your channel years ago for the firewood content and now it’s fun to see the woodworking side too. Keep the videos coming buddy
Hello Adam. Your wood rack is a good idea. A few months ago, I built a larger lumber storage rack in my canvas garage structure. The rack is 4 ft wide x 5 ft high x 16 feet long. The rack was built with 2 x 4s. There are 5 layers of cross pieces, so I can store similar sized pieces together and keep the different sized lumber separated on other shelves. The rack also holds off-cuts from past projects. I live 40 minutes from the nearest lumber yard. I bought the lumber when prices were low and, now, have a stockpile to use for small projects.
Hey Adam. Another great video. I really liked your statement about how time spent now on organization is time well spent as it makes all future work easier. I was surprised by your use of four wheels instead of six. But, your explanation makes sense. If using only four, I guess it is wise to make sure they are beefy wheels that can handle the weight you plan to put on the cart. Moving it around: think about attaching handles in the spots where you typically grasp the cart when you move it. This will give you something to grasp and will make moving it around easier. Another enjoyable video. You will certainly "catch me on the next one." Peace!!!
Shop Infrastructure builds are some of my favorite CZcams videos. I like seeing how other guys organize their stuff. Adam Savage has some incredible shop infrastructure content like this, too.
Certainly addresses the problem of having to pick up each piece of scrap when it needs to be moved. I was kind of surprised that it looks like all store bought materials used. A company I used to work at sold casters. It was recommended to rate the total capacity of 3 casters instead of 4.
Every shop needs one…I built a permanent similar one a few years ago, but because my shop is smaller than yours, I think it’s time to do a mobile one like yours. GREAT FOR A CARPENTER GUY.
I watch you and Mike (Outdoors with the Morgans) with your mills, I'm so jealous. With that, it really makes you wish you could mill some sort of "paneling/plywood". Keep up with the content, look forward to your projects!
I love how you leverage clamps to ensure your parts tight and square before screwing together or just to hold parts even, etc. And that’s even separate from your stretcher clamp trick.
The only suggestion that could be added is that plywood shouldn't be screwed on end like that. It's a pretty weak joint but you're also not stressing it too much, time will be the biggest problem. Not that it helps but you should have done 4 wheels for the flat workbench and 6 wheels for your storage cart with the center wheels being fixed casters at least 1" taller overall like Home Depot flatbed carts. Last thing, you and Doug might look into local cruiser motorcycle dealerships, the bikes they get come on metal pallets that might be a good starting point to weld up firewood drying/dump boxes like you firewood business friend does. Just a thought because I used one of those pallets as my starting point for my mobile steel rack 20 years ago.
Thanks Adam. This is one more reason why I look forward to your channel. You tackle all different projects around your home. It keeps your content interesting. Today's video reminded me of Norm Abram's New Yankee Workshop.
I'm the welder/fabricator you were talking about. I built one like this out of steel a few years ago. It's been great. I added storage above the sheet goods for long stock - so glad I built it.
Excellent video. My Dad always taught me to never throw away wood. You never know when you will need it. Appreciate the tip on the clamp / spreader. Enjoyed this one. Great sweatshirt too. Go Duquesne!
This cart looks great. You might want to add a drawer handle to the top shelf on each end. It might make rolling the cart around easier. Just a thought.
Yeah, the payback on that storage rack is enormous and really it is a must-do project. Think of the time and space saved along with utilizing more of your materials. An absolute no brainer. Nice cart, Adam. Maybe bigger wheels would make it easier to push around if you ever feel the need.
Great project, just a word of caution about those sheet goods. A child could easily pull those over and be caught underneath or even worse 😢. So I would design something to catch it.
I love this cart and plan to make one someday. Right now my shop is a 8x12 shed but I have a fairly efficient wood storage system considering the space I have. I love the foam board hack. I have been using that for years. I eventually ended up cutting mine in half and it’s much easier to use and store now.
For full-length lumber, i have a rack hanging from the ceiling. Vertical threaded rods are bolted to the ceiling joists, with metal bars between them. This gives me 4 feet of width for 8 foot lengths. I can just reach it standing on my toes, so it's out of the way but easily accessible. That will leave this rolling cart for only the shorter cut lengths.
Looks good. One of the things I do is put a piece of painters tape on the leftovers with the basic measurement. Helps when you are looking for a piece for a specific use and know the size.
For your safety chain, don’t put it around the cart, put it over the cart. Add two heavy chains that go from about a foot off the floor to the other side a foot off the floor. Use something like a binder chain… heavier the better. Makes it easier to pull a piece out and the safety chain resets itself automatically. One connection at the top is all you need… and it self adjusts to more or less panels on the cart. I discovered this accidentally when I needed to keep multiple 4x8 sheets of insulation against the garage wall while working with them. I put a screw thru a binder chain and could pull out what I needed. Discovered it worked just as well with 6 sheets of 3/4 stock.
Irony: building a scrap wood cart out of scrap wood and not having any scrap wood when you're done. It's like spending your last dollar to buy a wallet 😅
Larger heavy duty casters would help with the heavy load. You buy cheap casters and have a heavy load the casters will eventually fail. Plus rubber casters with heavy load will develop flats.
Nice job on the cart. They are excellent at keeping your lumber organized. I built something similar and I used cargo nets from harbor freight to secure materials on the sides. Straps are kind of hit or miss if the will secure all material because of different dimensions.
That's a nice cart. If those casters turn out to be too much of a PITA, Harbor Freight has 8" pneumatic swivel casters (Item #42485 and #60251) that would make it really easy to roll.
Just a little heads up on a great time saver tool, drill and countersink in one bit, sold at all major hardware stores, kits usually come in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch countersinks with proper tapered bits. They also make the proper size holes for wood plugs if you want to hide the screws, I hope this is useful for you Adam thanks for the great videos!
Great, functional storage cart, Adam. Even though it wasn't your design, it is very innovative. Perhaps you could attach a pull tongue to the frame to help move it around in the shop? Neighbor Doug will be envious.
Hi Adam. I noticed that you store your chopsaw on the wall. That is a great idea. Could you do a video showing your ideas for storing various tools out of the way? Thanks.
I noticed that, in reply to a comment by @mikeknoll1130, Adam's Mom mentioned a video where Adam, with help, guidance, and supervision from Doug, Dougified the shop.
I found the miter saw holder in a previous video… skip to 14:05 … there are a few closeups in the video during the minute before that … it’s when Adam is talking about the cabinets above it. You can get a good look at how simple it is built and how well it stores out of the way… 😊 czcams.com/video/HH3YZuwn7eg/video.htmlsi=bPPkR9I_ht5c6J3N
Organization and workflow. When it comes to projects like this, you don’t have time to NOT do it. Thanks for sharing.
So true!
This is perfect. Now, it's all lifted off the ground enough that you can get pallet forks under it and drop it on your next bonfire! Just be sure to save your casters! 😂
lol yeah. Splitting wood sucks
Another fast paced, time lapsed video that was enjoyable to watch. It’s nice to see progress on a project rather than a how to. Nice job.
Thank you!
Thanks Adam, this motivates me to build one, instead of using a big plastic bin on wheels. Organization is much better.

Adam, what a great project. You have really become a very competent woodworker. Stay safe, healthy and warm. Bill H from Cranberry Township
Thank you bill. That’s a nice compliment
Adam,no need to be burning now you’re ready for the next woodworking project in the future 😮😊❤
Nicely Done, the concept, execution and also the video editing/flow is top shelf. The chain will be a nice finishing touch. 😊👍👍👍
Whoop whoop - 🎶🎵 Hometown Acres is the place I want to be 🎶🎵 😂 Thanks for the early video! God bless y'all abundantly! ♥️🙏♥️👍
Thank you Dianne. Truly appreciate your comments!
@@HometownAcres Well, I truly appreciate your videos, so we're even!! 😉👍♥️🙏
Great job , u might want to build another lol
Great name - it's a Doug project 🤪
We all love Doug projects !
Now get that wall done, spring will be here before you know it!
Norm Abram calls those pieces "off cuts", to him they are not scrap. Great Project.
Maybe add a wagon handle so you can pull it. Might make it easier to move. Great project and execution! I’ll be using this idea!
It’s came out great Adam. Funny how most of us dads are very like minded and similar interests. Followed your channel years ago for the firewood content and now it’s fun to see the woodworking side too. Keep the videos coming buddy
Nice one Adam, you were clearly channeling some Norm Abram’s today

Thank you. And yeah it needs handles
Wonderful job Adam! Nothing is lost on you! You don’t just talk about it, you make it happen. See you in the next episode.
Thank you Jim!

Yeah. Really the only thing you can’t make are sheet goods and treated lumber
I love how you leverage clamps to ensure your parts tight and square before screwing together or just to hold parts even, etc. And that’s even separate from your stretcher clamp trick.
Clamps make working by yourself so much easier
Nice job, Adam! A cart like this is a must in a wood shop.
The only suggestion that could be added is that plywood shouldn't be screwed on end like that. It's a pretty weak joint but you're also not stressing it too much, time will be the biggest problem.

This worked out very well, Adam. Very organized and a nice workflow. Great Job, Adam. Have an awesome day. 👍🏻👍🏻🏆🏆
Thank you!

Nice project. Agree with Doug. Get wall project finished before it gets nice out!

D.I.Y..... Doug It Yourself! Making Neighbor Doug proud. Have A Day ! ;~)
This cart looks great. You might want to add a drawer handle to the top shelf on each end. It might make rolling the cart around easier. Just a thought.
This exactly what I need starting tomorrow on this

Yeah I may get bigger higher quality castors down the road
GOOOOOD
SUNDAY MORNING EVERYONE!!….Nice project Adam. Thanks for sharing again! Catch ya on the next one
Have a day 😊
Mornin Jack!
You will love that cart, I have one and use it all the time. Storing or picking stuff from it.
Great project, just a word of caution about those sheet goods. A child could easily pull those over and be caught underneath or even worse 😢. So I would design something to catch it.
Yep I said that at the end
Great idea, I have that exact problem to solve. Sheet goods take up a lot of space without a cart like that.
I love this cart and plan to make one someday. Right now my shop is a 8x12 shed but I have a fairly efficient wood storage system considering the space I have. I love the foam board hack. Thanks Adam.. use a "Cargo net" on the one side with the small stuff.

I AM going to make one of these for my garage. It's too simple not to.
You’ll enjoy it
Nice job! looks great!
Good job Adam you have become a great DYI guy, a long way from when you started your channel
Yeah we’ve come a long way in 5 years. Looking forward to seeing where I am in another 5 years
Adam I this Neighbor Doug is rubbing off on you lol good job.
Adam Savage from Tested calls it “Shop Infrastructure”

That’s a funny way to look at it lol

Some strong bungee cords.
Nice job on the cart. They are excellent at keeping your lumber organized. I built something similar and I used cargo nets from harbor freight to secure materials on the sides. Straps are kind of hit or miss if the will secure all material because of different dimensions.
Hey Adam, very nice project. I think that will work really well.👍
Thank you!
Thanks, love it. New project to do!!😊
Another great video Adam!

You do a good job, Adam, on your homestead my dad dose have a lot of wood
Very worthwhile project. Nice idea.

Adam you can screw a 3” or 4” pvc tube into the upright storage for the dowels so they don’t rattle around.
That’s another great idea
Maybe go from center bottom to top with a strap/bungee for the 8' long sheet.
Great, functional storage cart, Adam. Even though it wasn't your design, it is very innovative. Perhaps you could attach a pull tongue to the frame to help move it around in the shop? Neighbor Doug will be envious.
Love the videos. Keep up the good work
Great video! I'm getting ready to make one for my shop. Thanks for the clamp tip!
Y'all have a good weekend!❤😊
That is going to be so handy! Nice job Adam!
Thank you!
Smart thinking
Adam admit it you’ve been Doug’ed 😂

Good job and video Adam. Really like your channel
Thank you!
Nice job!
Generally, if it is less than 2 foot, I cut it in 6-8 inch pieces for kindling.
Looks good Adam
Than you
That will definitely be a time saver for you, and if you don't do it now when would you do it?
Yes it will
Nice !
Looks good. How much scrap wood did you use to build it tho? :D
Edit: ok, answered it in the video!
Can Doug come over and review the cart? 😜
Write on the end of each board the size of each piece .
That’s a good idea
Very Doug like 😂
Come a time - you burn it…. Nice cart.
Is your miter saw hanger thing just a couple pipes that fit the bracket of your miter saw??
Yep
I found the miter saw holder in a previous video… skip to 14:05 … there are a few closeups in the video during the minute before that … it’s when Adam is talking about the cabinets above it.
You can get a good look at how simple it is built and how well it stores out of the way… 😊

I made one of those a few years ago, but I filled it up immediately and any new scrap wouldn't fit. It ended up just getting in the way.
The word your looking for is "Infrastructure" (13:20)ish
Yes that describes it perfectly in one word
Ratchet straps when you need to move it
Dimensions are at 8 minutes in, for anyone else looking to replicate this :)
I notice you don’t clue and screw?
You skipped step 1, drawing what you want to build, guestimate dimensions, etc
No scrap lumber was used to make the scrap lumber cart.. oxymoronic 😇
Great project to upgrade your workshop space!! So efficient!! 🪵🪵🪵👍🏻
Thank you!
Are you gonna stain it to match the walls?
No. It’s just a lumber cart. Not a piece of fine furniture
