The timeout didn't matter. Thomas had ran the ball out of bounds when he scrambled, which automatically stopped the clock. Now had he stayed in bounds, the clock would've started to run again once the line of scrimmage was set up by the refs. But in the end Richt had only called the timeout to try and ice Butker. Thankfully though, Butker has ice running through his veins and made the kick by inches.
Love Scott Howard in this...before the touchdown pass, "this is the ballgame." After it's caught, "Malcolm Mitchell has a story to tell to his book club this week, that he caught the winning touchdown against Georgia Tech." Last year, he moved on to calling ACC games regionally for Fox. Gaudin doesn't use "we." He's only 30 or so, but he got to call a few NCAA Tourney games for Westwood One back in March. He may have bigger opportunities down the road as well. Roddy Jones has already moved on...he's going to be a sideline guy for ACC Network games starting this fall, after only a year in the Tech booth. Your level of professionalism will determine whether or not you have any serious outside opportunities (Falcons, Fox Sports, Westwood, ACC Network), or whether you stay in a situation like Howard's. I imagine he'll retire doing this. Either career arc is fine...do what you want. But don't expect anyone outside of Bulldawg Nation to think Howard is any good at his job. I think the "we" line is one you don't cross, even if you are clearly a homer (most college announcers are to an extent, I'll grant that). Howard (and Munson before him) made his choice as to what kind of broadcaster he wants to be, and that's fine.

They were playing in Athens, which meant it was an ACC squad officiating. When they play in Atlanta, then it's an SEC squad officiating. The NCAA has it setup so whoever's the home team gets the visitors conference officials to keep it fair.

But boy when we walked back in and we just saw Butker lining up for the field goal both of our jaws dropped. We each looked at each other and asked "What the fuck just happened?" This is one of my favorite all time wins against UGAy.
